The grands ensembles, or large-scale high-rise housing projects, are widely regarded as notorious products of postwar French government policy in the area of housing and urban planning. There was a general consensus that the grands ensembles had been a 'failure'. They were perceived as the source of all the ills of the contemporary city, as responsible for a social breakdown stemming from lack of infrastructure, geographical isolation, and monotonous environments. French government embarked on a broad renovation effort in light of the deteriorated condition of grands ensembles in the 1980s, which has been approved as generally 'successful'. This study focusing on French cases allowed me to demonstrate that following qualifications are critically important for successful housing projects: urban contextual continuity, socially mixed community, authentic planning for achieving sense of place, relationship between collective and individual expression, et cetera.
The numerical study for the effect of various factors that affect the temperature distribution of the process glass installed above the large rectangular heater plate was carried out. For the calculation, heat flux, distance between heat source and process glass plate, effect of vacuum condition and convection in a chamber were considered as important factors. The results showed that the temperature gradient on the glass was increased at the natural convection because of the buoyancy force increases due to the heated air. Also, the more heat flux and distance between the heater plate and glass increases, the more increasing the temperature gradient was. In the case of isothermal heating wall, the temperature variation was smaller than the uniform heat flux condition.
The purpose of this research is to develop algorithms using the Differential Evolution Algorithm (DE) to solve a multi-objective, sources and stages location-allocation problem. The development process starts from the design of a standard DE, then modifies the recombination process of the DE in order improve the efficiency of the standard DE. The modified algorithm is called modified DE. The proposed algorithms have been tested with one real case study (large size problem) and 2 randomly selected data sets (small and medium size problems). The computational results show that the modified DE gives better solutions and uses less computational time than the standard DE. The proposed heuristics can find solutions 0 to 3.56% different from the optimal solution in small test instances, while differences are 1.4-3.5% higher than that of the lower bound generated by optimization software in medium and large test instances, while using more than 99% less computational time than the optimization software.
A binary integer programming model is proposed for a complex timetabling problem in a university faculty which conducts various degree programs. The decision variables are defined with fewer dimensions to economize the model size of large scale problems and to improve modeling efficiency. Binary matrices are used to incorporate the relationships between the courses and students, and the courses and teachers. The model includes generally applicable constraints such as completeness, uniqueness, and consecutiveness; and case specific constraints. The model was coded and solved using Open Solver which is an open-source optimizer available as an Excel add-in. The results indicate that complicated timetabling problems with large numbers of courses and student groups can be formulated more efficiently with fewer numbers of variables and constraints using the proposed modeling framework. The model could effectively generate timetables with a significantly lower number of work hours per week compared to currently used timetables. The model results indicate that the particular timetabling problem is bounded by the student overlaps, and both human and physical resource constraints are insignificant.
In order to investigate low frequency swishing noise of wind turbines, singularity in circular motion with large radius is introduced as a noise source model. By employing Lowson's acoustic analogy, simple exact solution is obtained. The solution shows that time histories of acoustic pressure at receiver points varied significantly according to receiver's directional location, even when the retarded time distributions are similar. However, the corresponding spectra of sound pressure for the receiver locations where the retarded time distributions are almost the same are not significantly different. It can be inferred from these results that the time-averaged sound pressure spectra which cannot take into account the detailed difference in the time-variation of wind turbine noise may not represent the sound quality of wind turbines due to its swishing.
The analysis of vent -emitted Hg concentrations and relevant environmental parameters was made from the inlet of 42 ventpipes in Nan-Ji-Do area of Seoul during September/october of 2000. Using these data, the fluxes of Hg from the ventpipes were also derived. The mean concentration of Hg, computed using the data sets collected from 42 ventpipes, was 420$\pm$619ng m$^{-3}$ with the range of 3.45~2,952ng m$^{-3}$ . Because of large differences in concentration levels between two sectors 1 and 2 and between plain and slope areas. evaluation of the data was made by dividing them into four different categories such as plain areas of sectors 1 and 2 (and/or slope areas of sectors 1 and 2). When this classification was applied, the computed fluxes were highly different among each group with the generally enhanced fluxes in plain area relative to slope area. The computed fluxes were then used to make comparative analysis of different source processes in the study area.
A simple analytic model is proposed here to analyze the concentration deficit field caused by a large area of vegetated area. With non-dimensional deposition velocity chosen as small parameter, the regular perturbation method is exploited to derive the mass balance equation and the dynamic equations for the concentration deficit field, Analytic solutions to those equations are obtained in a closed form for several cases of interest, assuming that the concentration field is stationary and the plume can be nicely approximated as Gaussian for a point source. The results suggest that quite a negligible fraction (less than 1%) of the gaseous air pollutants emitted into the air is removed by the vegetated area of which width is 4 km in wind-wise direction, the typical dimension of the Restricted Development Zones around the metropolitan regions in South Korea.
The Automated Quantitative Knife-Edge Test (AQuaKET) method was developed for testing the surface profiles of large optics with high accuracy. Testing with the required accuracy of very large telescope is not an easy job to achieve, as it is a nano-technology. There are lots of possible error sources which can occur during the measurements and in the data processing of the AQuaKET. The error sources can be categorized into 5 areas: optics, mechanics, electronics, numerical processes, and system. In this paper, possible error sources in Optics are discussed, which are intensity variation of the light source, diffraction effects, and parallax effect. In this talk, those possible error sources in optics are presented and discussed.
When we conduct development of a large-size SI project, it is highly necessary to utilize an appropriate application framework which helps to build a qualified software with high productivity in a short period of time. In this paper, we propose the architecture of a dynamically reconfigurable CBD application integration framework that has been used for developing large-scale e-business applications to achieve high development productivity and maintainability. This Integration framework can easily extend its functionalities, and dynamically change its configuration during run time according to the business category, such as applying interaction patterns among main components in software architecture, rules, policies, and environmental parameters. Dynamic reconfiguration has the feature to make applications be easily customized for changeable requirements. Through our application integration framework, huge sizes of contents can be managed according to the business category as well, by keeping configuration informations and huge volumes of source codes. In order to evaluate out application integration framework in terms of performance criteria, we present experimental results of throughputs from the framework by yielding dynamic configuration without any performance degradation.
We revisited a recent dust emission observed at a main-belt asteroid P/2010 A2 in terms of dynamical properties of dust particles and large fragments. This is a continued research that we made a presentation at the Korean Astronomical Society 2016 Spring Meeting, but we have strengthened the dynamical analysis of the ejecta to afford the conclusive evidence for the enigmatic phenomenon. We thus constructed a model to reproduce the morphology of the dust cloud based on the dust dynamics, and succeeded in reproducing the observed morphologies in different epochs over several years. For further analysis, we reconstructed the proper motion of large fragments with respect to the dust emission source estimated from our dust model. We found that (i) the dust cloud morphologies and (ii) observed trajectories of fragments are reasonably explained only when we assumed that both were ejected from a position where no object was detected from any observations. This result suggests that the original body was shattered by an impact, leaving only debris into space. In this presentation, we will compare our results with impact laboratory studies and provide an impact interpretation of the P/2010 A2 activity.
