  • This study was carried out the laboratory tests and field plate load test in order to evaluate the reinforcement effect of geocell for road construction. The geocell-reinforced subgrade shows the increment of cohesion and friction angle with comprison of non-reinforced subgrade. In addition, the field plate load test was performed on the geocell-reinforced subgrade to estimate the bearing capacity of soil. The direct shear test was conducted with utilizing a large-scale shear box to evaluate the internal soil friction angle with geocell reinforcement. The number of cells in the geocell system is varied to investigate the effect of soil reinforcement. The theoretical bearing capacity of subgrade soil with and without geocell reinforcement was estimated by using the soil internal friction angle. The field plate load tests were also conducted to estimate the bearing capacity with geocell reinforcement. It is found out that the bearing capacity of geocell-reinforced subgrade gives 2 times higher value than that of unreinforced subgrade soil. In the future, the reinforcement effect of the geocell rigidity and load-balancing effect of the geocells should be evaluated.

  • When deformation occurs on slope reinforced with anchor, shear stress and bending stress are applied on the shear surface along the slip surface and increase of the shear deformation causes the tension force variation of the anchor. In this study, shear test was performed by measuring the tension force of the anchor by inducing shear deformation in vertical direction of the anchor using a large-scale direct shear test equipment in order to confirm the tension force variation of the anchor induced by shear deformation. The shear test was performed for 8 conditions which were classified according to the anchor reinforcement, separation distance (1D, 2D, 4D) from the shear surface to bonded part and the lateral-pressure condition (0.1 MPa, 0.2 MPa) of adjacent ground. As a result of the shear test, it was found that the separation distance and the lateral-pressure condition affect the shear force of the ground reinforced by anchor and the tension force of the anchor, and experimentally verified that the shear force variation is related to axial force variation of the anchor head and tip. Therefore, it was confirmed that the behavior of the bonded part induced by the shear deformation can be indirectly predicted by analyzing the tendency of the tension force variation of the anchor head.

  • A prediction model of resilient modulus($E_R$) was developed for recycled crushed-rock-soil mixtures. The evaluation of $E_R$, using the "orthodox" repeated loading tri-axial test, is not feasible for such a large-size gravelly material. An alternative method was proposed hereby using the subtle different modulus called nonlinear dynamic modulus. The prediction model was developed by utilizing in-situ measured shear modulus($G_{max}$) and its reduction curves of modeled materials using the large free-free resonant column test. A pilot evaluation of the model parameters was carried out for recycled crushed-rock-soil-mixture at a highway construction site near Gimcheon, Korea. The values of the model parameters($A_E,\;n_E,\;{\varepsilon}_r\;and\;{\alpha}$) were proposed as 9618, 0.47, 0.0135, and 0.8, respectively.

  • The gravel compaction pile method has been used as a soft foundation improvement method because bearing capacity and discharge capacity is excellent. But the discharge capacity decreased when the clogging was generated because the clay penetrate into a void of gravel compaction pile. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to reduce the clogging generation in gravel compaction pile constructing in the soft ground and take a step to minimize a void of gravel compaction pile. And the proper mixing ratio was determined with the large scale direct shear test performed to get strength and permeability with mixing ratio of crushed stone and sand(100:0, 90:10, 85:15, 80:20, 75:25). As a result of the test, it was showed that internal friction angle was the highest at 85:15 mixing ratio of crushed stone and sand and we can make sure a tendency of internal friction angle's decrease when the mixing ratio of crushed stone and sand passed 15%.

  • In recent years, not only the occurrences but the magnitude of earthquakes in Korea are on an increasing trend and other sources of dynamic events including large-scale construction, operation of hi띤-speed railway and explosives blasting have been increasing. Besides, the probability of exposure fir rock joints to free faces gets higher as the scale of rock mass structures becomes larger. For that reason, the frictional behavior of rock joints under dynamic conditions needs to be investigated. In this study, a shaking table test system was set up and a series of dynamic test was carried out to examine the dynamic frictional behavior of rock joints. In addition, a computer program was developed, which calculated the acceleration and deformation of the sliding block theoretically based on Newmark sliding block procedure. The static friction angle was back-calculated by measuring yield acceleration at the onset of slide. The dynamic friction angle was estimated by closely approximating the experimental results to the program-simulated responses. As a result of dynamic testing, the static friction angle at the onset of slide as well as the dynamic friction angle during sliding were estimated to be significantly lower than tilt angle. The difference between the tilt angle and the static friction angle was $4.5\~8.2^{\circ}$ and the difference between the tilt angle and the dynamic friction angle was $2.0\~7.5^{\circ}$. The decreasing trend was influenced by the magnitude of the base acceleration and inclination angle. A DEM program was used to simulate the shaking table test and the result well simulated the experimental behavior. Friction angles obtained by shaking table test were significantly lower than basic friction angle by direct shear test.

  • Recently, recycling of the industrial by-products has been an important issue of the Yeosu bay, where large industrial complex is located. Major industrial by-products which are produced from Yeosu industrial complex area are phosphogypsum and flyash, which are about 82% and 10% of the 1.6 million tons industrial by-products. Moreover since the Yeosu industrial complex is located at seaside, phosphogypsum has been pointed as cause of serious environmental contaminant from the regional society. Therefore recycling study can't be delayed anymore. In this paper, artificial aggregate was manufactured by non-sintering process from industrial byproducts - e.g., phosphogypsum and slag - as a geotechnical drainage material. To show the feasibility of the artificial aggregate as a geotechnical drainage material, geotechnical experiments including particle size analysis, permeability test, and large scale direct shear test were carried out. Test results show that the permeability of the artificial aggregates range from $6.94{\times}10^{-1}cm/sec$ to $8.86{\times}10^{-1}cm/sec$, which is much larger value than those are required for the drainage material from the construction specification in Korea, and the friction angle of the artificial aggregate is as large as that of sand in water immersion conditions. From the test results, it was concluded that artificial aggregate made from industrial by-products can be used successfully as a geotechnical drainage material.

  • Jeju-do is a island formed by the volcanic activity and has more than 360 volcanic cones distributed widely along the long axis of the elliptically shaped island. The volcanic cones consist mainly of scoria, so called "Song-I" in the local dialect. In this study the chemical and soil mechanical properties of scoria being very different from those of the inland were investigated with the various tests. In the sieve-passing test the particle size of scoria had more than 10 of uniformity coefficient and gradation coefficient of 1 ~ 3, showing relatively homogenous distribution. Based on the uniformity classification, scoria was assorted into GW. In the large scale direct shear tested for measuring the mechanical strength of scoria the internal friction angle of red scoria was $37^{\circ}$ and that of black scoria was $36^{\circ}$. This indicated that there was no difference in the mechanical strength between two types of scoria. On the other hand, red and black scoria had $1.24{\times}10^{-3}$ to $3.55{\times}10^{-2}$ cm/sec of k values for the static water level permeability, thus being classified into a coarse or fine sand as compared with that representing the saturated soil. They also had 1.411 to $1.477\;g/cm^3$ of notably low $r_{dmax}$ values for the compaction test as compared with common soil, which was considered to be due to their low specific gravity and high porosity. In conclusion, the soil mechanic properties of scoria obtained from this study are thought to be very helpful for reducing lots of trial and error happening in the civil engineering construction.

  • The pipe jacking method which is a non-excavation method is frequently used due to constructability and economical efficiency in a medium or small-sized pipeline construction. However, jacking process of the method still causes problems that the base ground is disturbed and loosen. These lead to surface settlement, strength decrease and leakage of water. Therefore, this study presents in-situ application of the steel pipe jacking with grouting, and it is that jacking and grouting are progressed simultaneously. To verify this, the steel pipe jacking with grouting and the existing steel pipe jacking have been constructed on the same ground condition. It has been proved that the steel pipe jacking with grouting is in-situ applicable according to results of monitoring surface settlement, in-situ density, GPR geophysical prospecting and large scale direct shear test.

  • The rammed aggregate compaction pile method is widely used as soft ground improvement method because of the installed piles improve not only overall composite capacity but also discharge capacity. But the discharge capacity is declined when the clogging is generated due to the clay penetration into voids of rammed aggregate compaction pile with the time elapsed. The purpose of this study is to reduce the clogging problem occurred in rammed aggregate compaction pile constructed in the soft ground and to minimize voids of rammed aggregate compaction pile. The proper mixing ratio was determined which is based on the results of the large scale direct shear tests conducted to get strength and permeability as optimum mixing ratio of crushed stone and bottom ash. The test results indicated that the highest internal friction angle was obtained at 80:20 mixing ratio of crushed stone and bottom ash. The internal friction angle was declined when the mixing ratio of the bottom ash increased over 20%. The results of the clogging tests, presented that the mixture of 80:20 crushed stone and bottom ash is highest effective of clogging than ratio of pure crushed stone.
