In Total Water Pollutant Load Management System of Korea, unit load approach based on land register data is currently used for the estimation of non-point pollutant load. However, a problem raised that land register data could not always reflect the actual land surface coverages which determine runoff characteristics of non-point pollution sources. As a way to overcome this, we tried to establish quantitative relationships between the aerial images (0.4m resolution) which reflect actual land surface coverages and the land registration maps according to the 19 major designated land-use categories in Kyeongan watershed. Analyses showed different relationships according to the land-use categories. Only a few land-use categories including forestry, road and river showed essentially identical and some categories such as orchard, parking lot and sport utility site showed no relationships at all between image data and land register data. Except for the two cases, all the other categories showed statistically significant linear relationships between image data and land register data. The analyses indicate that using high resolution aerial maps is a better way to estimate non-point pollutant load. If the aerial maps are not available, application of the linear relationships as conversion factors of land register data to image data could be an possible option to estimate non-point pollutant loads for the specific land-use categories in Kyeongan watershed.
Impervious surface increase due to urbanization, one of the leading causes of pavement increased the runoff coefficient, peak flow, and reducing the infiltration flow and thereby causing flooding and river erosion is occurring in aquatic ecosystems are known to impair. This study aimed to classify use type of detailed land into the road, reststop, tollgates and etc. focused on major domestic highways, to understand the characteristics of rainfall runoff pollutants and to calculate applicable unit pollution load. Because of high runoff coefficient and short travel time to drainage. first flush occurred clearly. Average EMCs of runoff in the highway was investigated as TSS 108.47 mg / L, COD 28.16 mg / L, BOD 13.61 mg / L, TN 6.38 mg / L, TP 0.03 mg / L, Cu 118.17 ${\mu}g$ / L, Pb 345.3 ${\mu}g$ / L, Zn 349.47 ${\mu}g$ / L. Unit pollution loads calculated by detailed land use area of highways based on average annual rainfall, EMCs, applicable basin areas and etc. were 46.6 kg/km2/day of BOD, 1.4 kg/km2/day of TP, 8.81 kg / km2/day of TN and these were BOD 50.8%, TP 66.7%, TN 64.4%in comparison of the unit pollution loads which applies fallow land standards of the TMDL(Total Maximum Daily Load). It was considered that discharged loads can be excessively calculated in case highway non-point management plans based on unit pollution load of the current land standard.
Recently, the population growth and agricultural development are rapidly undergoing in the South-West Texas. The junction of three river basins such as Lavaca river basin, Colorado-Lavaca Coastal basin and Lavaca-Guadalupe Coastal basin, are interesting for non-point and point source pollutant modeling: Especially, the 2 basins are an intensively agricultural region (Colorado-Lavaca Coastal/Lavaca-Guadalupe Coastal basins) and several cities are rapidly extended. In case of the Lavaca river basin, there are many range land. Several habitat types wide-spread over three relatively larger basins and five wastewater discharge regions are located in there. There are different hazardous substances which have been released. Total nutrient loads are composed of land surface load and river load as Non-point source and discharge from wastewater facilities as point source. In 3 basins region, where point and non-point sources of poll Jtion may be a big concern, because increasing fertilizers and pesticides use and population cause. This project objective seeks to how to assess and control the accumulation of non-point and point source and discuss the main impacts of agriculture and environmental concern as non-point source with water quality related to pesticides, fertilizer, and nutrients and as point source with wasterwater discharge from cities. The GIS technique has been developed to aid in the point and non-point source analysis of impacts to natural resource within watershed. This project shows the losses in $kg/km^2/year$ of BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand), TN (Total Nitrogen) and TP (Total Phosphorus) in the runoff from the surface of 3 basins. In the next paper, sediment contamination will show how to evaluate in Estuarine habitats of these downstream.

This study was conducted to investigate the dynamics of nutrients such as total nitrogen (TN), nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3$-N) total phosphorous (TP), and phosphate phosphorous ($PO_4$-P) in outflow from a cabbage farmland in a mixed land-use watershed. The TN concentrations in groundwater showed twice peaks in late July 2006 and late March 2007 (3.8, 4.7 mg/L, respectively), when it rained shortly after fertilizer application, indicating that nitrogen leaching is greatly influenced by fertilization and rainfall. The mean concentrations of TN and $NO_3$-N in surface water were not significantly higher than those in groundwater, while the mean concentrations of TP and $PO_4$-P in surface water were significantly (p < 0.05) were higher than those in groundwater. The TN concentrations in groundwater were generally higher than those in surface water during fertilization and early growing season due to the effect of fertilization, but vice versa in the other periods. In contrast, the TP concentrations in groundwater were always lower than those in surface water due to the sorption of particulate phosphorous by soil. The ratio of TN load in baseflow to that in total TN load (39 %) was much greater than the TP ratio (7 %), suggesting that baseflow contribute to nitrogen export. Therefore, proper fertilization management should be taken to reduce nitrogen load through baseflow.
Human activities and land-use practices are intensely widening the urban areas. High impervious surface areas cover much of urban landscapes and are the primary pollutant sources which can lead to water quality and habitat degradation in its watershed. As the urban areas expand, transportation land-use such as parking lots, roads, service areas, toll-gates in highways and bridges also increase. These land-uses are significant in urban pollution due to high imperviousness rate and vehicular activities. To regulate the environmental impacts and to improve the water quality of rivers and lakes, the Ministry of Environment (MOE) in Korea developed the Total Pollution Load Management System (TPLMS) program. The main objective is to lead the watershed for a low impact development. On a local scale, some urban land surfaces can be emitting more pollution than others. Consequently, in urban areas, the unit loads are commonly employed to estimate total pollutant loadings emitted from various land-uses including residential, commercial, industrial, transportation, open lands such as parks and golf courses, and other developed land like parking areas as a result of development. In this research, unit pollutant loads derived specifically from transportation land-uses (i.e. branched out from urban areas) will be provided. Monitoring was conducted over 56 storm events at nine monitoring locations during three years. Results for the unit pollutant loads of transportation land-use are determined to be $399.5kg/km^2-day$ for TSS, $12.3kg/km^2-day$ for TN and $2.46kg/km^2-day$ for TP. The values are higher than those of urban areas in Korean MOE and US highways. These results can be used by MOE to separate the pollutant unit load of transportation landuses from urban areas.

The partitioning level of a catchment becomes an issue if the calculated results from different levels show the same performance regardless of the levels. This study aims to identify the proper processing level of spatial resolution for the SWMM model application in an urban area. Using GIS overlaying technique, the division of subcatchments as a hydrologic similarity unit (HSU) is achieved with a comprehensive consideration of surface slope conditions, flow directions of storm sewers, and current land cover situation. Three surface-sewer alternatives are made on the basis of three different levels of surface divisions as well as the number of sewer connections and used as runoff simulation fields for the application of SWMM. As the result, it is found that the effect of a spatial resolution on the surface runoff results is not significant. On the other hand, the accumulated pollution load from an unit subcatchment, which is built by aggregation of several unit subcatchments consisting of various land cover conditions is reduced through the deterioration of surface spatial resolution. Although overall runoff pattern and accumulated runoff are little affected by spatial resolution, the simulated runoff from sewer outlet shows slight difference at the peak appearance time. The gap between surface pollution load accumulated and it discharged from the sewer outlet in a surface-sewer alternative during runoff period is monitored but the level of error is less than 5-10% except the lowest spatial resolution case.
Low impact development (LID) technique is relatively new concept to reduce surface runoff and pollutant loading from land cover by attempting to match predevelopment condition with various integrated management practices (IMPs). In this study, computational model for designing and evaluating LID, named LIDMOD, was developed based on SCS-CN method and applied at Andong bus terminal to evaluate LID applicapability and design retention/detention area for volume or peak flow control. LIDMOD simulated with 21 years simulation period that yearly surface runoff by post-development without LID was significantly higher than that with LID showing about 2.8 times and LID could reduce efficiently yearly surface runoff with 75% reduction of increased runoff by conventional post development. LIDMOD designed detention area for volume/peak flow control with 20.2% of total area by hybrid design. LID can also efficiently reduce pollutant load from land cover. Pollutant loads from post-development without LID was much higher than those from pre-development with showing 37 times for BOD, 2 times for TN, and 9 times for TP. Pollutant loads from post-development with LID represented about 57% of those without LID. Increasing groundwater recharge reducing cooling and heating fee, creating green refuge at building area can be considered as additional benefits of LID. At the point of reducing runoff and pollutant load, LID might be important technique for Korean TMDL and LIDMOD can be useful tool to calculate unit load for the case of LID application.

For temporary excavation support in a congested urban area, the strand of ground anchor should be removed to get permission of the private land to install anchors. But the strand doesn't need to be removed in the outside city area after use. So the anchor body, tension anchor, is fabricated in-situ. The unbonded length of This anchor has several strands, which wrap only one sheath. When the anchor body is carried into job-site or installed in the bore hole, the sheath is torn easily because it is a very week material. So the grout permeate into the torn sheath. Because of that, the load doesn't transfer to the bond length of ground anchors. It may indicate that load is being transferred along the unbonded length and thus within the potential slip surface assumed for overall stability of the anchored system. The load tests were performed on seven low-pressure grouted anchors installed in weathered soil to verify its problems. Four anchors(Type A) have the unbonded length, which consist of five strands and a week sheath and three anchors(Type B) have strands, which is covered by plastic sheath filled with grease, in the unbonded length. Both anchors are compared with load tests results.

Infiltration is a process by which precipitation infuses into subsurface soils. The process determines the surface flow and baseflow volume, and it is one of most important hydrological processes regarding nonpoint source pollution management. Therefore, the Ministry of Environment has developed a guideline to determine the impervious area ratio to understand the hydrological process in administrative districts and watersheds. The impervious area ratio can be determined using land use or land cover maps. Three approaches were explored to determine the impervious area ratio in 25 districts in Seoul. The impervious area ratio was determined by employing the Land registration map and Land property data in the first approach, Land property map in the second approach, and Land cover map in the third approach. The ratio ranged from 38.96% to 83.01% in the first approach, 38.98% to 83.02% in the second approach, and 37.62% to 76.63% in the third approach. Although the ranges did not provide any significant differences in the approaches, some districts displayed differences up to 9.48% by the approach. These differences resulted from the fact that the data were land use or land cover, especially in the area of airport, residential complex area, and school sites. In other words, division of the pervious and impervious areas in an individual plot was not allowed in the Land registration map, while it was allowed in the Land cover map. Therefore, it was concluded that there is a need to revise the guideline so that a reasonable impervious area ratio can be determined in the districts.

In this paper, the effects of scale formation in engine water jacket upon the thermal durability of engine itself and its component parts were studied. To understand the effect of quality of water, a full load engine endurance test for 50 hours was carried out with not-treated underground water. The followings were found through the tested engine inspection after the endurance test; 1-2 mm thick scale formation in the engine water jacket, valve seat wear, piston top land scuffing, piston pin stick, and cylinder bore scuffing in siamese area. In order to understand the causes of above test results, the heat rejection rate to coolant, the metal surface temperature of combustion chamber, and the oil and exhaust gas temperatures were measured and analyzed. The scale formed in the engine water jacket played a role as thermal insulator. The scale formed in the engine reduced the heat rejection rate to coolant and it caused to increase the metal surface temperature. The reduced heat rejection rate to coolant increased the heat rejection rate to oil and exhaust gas and increased the oil and exhaust gas temperature. Also, the reasons of valve seat wear, piston top land scuffing and cylinder bore scuffing, and piston pin stick quantitatively analyzed in this paper.
