This paper presents a mathematical model suitable for the calculation of laminated glass, i.e. glass plates combined with an interlayer material. The model is based on a beam differential equation for each glass plate and a separate differential equation for the slip in the interlayer. In addition to slip, the model takes into account prestressing force in the interlayer. It is possible to combine the two contributions arbitrarily, which is important because the glass sheet fabrication process changes the stiffness of the interlayer in ways that are not easily predictable and could introduce prestressing of varying magnitude. The model is suitable for reformulation into an inverse procedure for calculation of the relevant parameters. Model consisting of a system of differential-algebraic equations, proved too stiff for cases with the thin interlayer. This novel approach covers the full range of possible stiffnesses of layered glass sheets, i.e., from zero to infinite stiffness of the interlayer. The comparison of numerical and experimental results contributes to the validation of the model.
Standard finite element wave propagation codes are useful for determining stresses caused by the impact of one body with another; however, their applicability to a laminated system such as architectural laminated glass is limited because the important interlayer delamination process caused by impact loading is difficult to model. This paper presents a method that allows traditional wave propagation codes to model the interlayer debonding of laminated architectural glass subject to low velocity, small missile impact such as that which occurs in severe windstorms. The method can be extended to any multilayered medium with adhesive bonding between the layers. Computational results of concern to architectural glazing designers are presented.
In vehicle to pedestrian accidents, cracks occur in the vehicle laminated glass due to impact of a pedestrian's head. In this study, FMH(Free Motion Headform) was used to experiment on and analyze the crack patterns on a vehicle laminated glass that collides with an adult headform at speeds of 20 km/h, 30 km/h, and 40 km/h, respectively. Applying the acquired experimental data and material property of the vehicle laminated glass to the structural analysis program LS-Dyna, we could develop the FE model of vehicle laminated glass similar to real vehicle laminated glass. We could estimate the head impact velocity and pedestrian's vehicle impact velocity using the Madymo program.

In this paper, a multi-layered finite element model for laminated glass plates is introduced. A layer-wise theory is applied to the analysis of laminated glass due to the combination of stiff and soft layers; the independent layers are connected via Lagrange multipliers. The von $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ large deflection plate theory and the constant Poisson ratio for constitutive equations are assumed to capture the possible effects of geometric nonlinearity and the time/temperature-dependent response of the plastic foil. The linear viscoelastic behavior of a polymer foil is included by the generalized Maxwell model. The proposed layer-wise model was implemented into the MATLAB code and verified against detailed three-dimensional models in ADINA solver using different hexahedral finite elements. The effects of temperature, load duration, and creep/relaxation are demonstrated by examples.

Due to its relatively good safety performance and aesthetic benefits, laminated glass (LG) is increasingly being used as load-carrying members in modern buildings. This paper presents an experimental study into one applicational scenario of structural LG subjected to in-plane bending. The aim of the study is to reveal the in-plane behaviors of the LG beams made up of multi-layered glass sheets. The LG specimens respectively consisted of two, three and four plies of glass, bonded together by two prominent adhesives. A total of 26 tests were carried out. From these tests, the structural behaviors in terms of flexural stiffness, load resistance and post-breakage strength were studied in detail, whilst considering the influence of interlayer type, cross-sectional interlayer percentage and presence of shear forces. Based on the test results, analytical suggestions were made, failure modes were identified, corresponding failure mechanisms were discussed, and a rational engineering model was proposed to predict the post-breakage strength of the LG beams. The results obtained are expected to provide useful information for academic and engineering professionals in the analysis and design of LG beams bending in-plane.
The purpose of this research is to analyze the impact behaviors of laminated composite plates subjected to the transverse low-velocity impact by the steel ball. A plate finite element model based on Whitney and Pagano's the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) in conjunction with experimental static contact laws is formulated and then compared with the results of the impact experiments. Because the input data and the output data printed at every integration time step are lots of amount, these are interactively poecessed by the developed pre-processor(PREPLOT) and postprecessor(POSTPLOT). All results from these procesors are automatically generated by CALCOMP plotter. Test materials are glass/expoxy composite materials. The specimens are composed of [$0^{\circ} /45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/]2s\ and \[90^{\circ}/45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/$]2s stacking sequences and have $4.5^t{\times}200^w{\times}200^l$(mm) and $4.5^t{\times}300^w{\times}300^l$(mm) dimensions.
The stability behaviour of symmetrically laminated rectangular composite plates with loaded ends clamped and unloaded edges simply-supported, and subjected to uniform in-plane compression is investigated. A numerical and experimental investigation is presented in this contribution. The stacking sequence of the laminated glass/epoxy composite plates is symmetric about the middle surface and consists of 8-ply [0, 90, +45, -45]s lamination. Numerical predictions were obtained through the use of the finite element method. The above plates were modelled with 8-noded isoparametric layered shell elements. The effect of the input parameters such as the degree and forms of prescribed initial imperfection and the incremental step size required for incremental loading, on the convergence of the solution is thoroughly examined. Experimental results are presented for 10 test panels. All test panels were made from glass/epoxy unidirectional prepregs and have aspect ratio of 5.088. The laminate thicknesses were found to vary from 1.054 mm to 1.066 mm. Comparison of experimental data with predicted results show good correlation and give confidence in the finite element model.
The paper presents the thermo-mechanically induced non-linear response of multiwall carbon nanotube reinforced laminated composite beam (MWCNTRCB) supported by elastic foundation using higher order shear deformation theory and von-Karman non-linear kinematics. The elastic properties of MWCNT reinforced composites are evaluated using Halpin-Tsai model by considering MWCNT reinforced polymer matrix as new matrix by dispersing in it and then reinforced with E-glass fiber in an orthotropic manner. The laminated beam is supported by Pasternak elastic foundation with Winkler cubic nonlinearity. A generalized static analysis is formulated using finite element method (FEM) through principle of minimum potential energy approach.

In this study, the physically-based failure models for matrix and fibers in compression and tension loading are introduced. For the 3D stress based fiber kinking model a modification is proposed for calculation of the fiber misalignment angle. All of these models are implemented into the finite element code by using the advantage of damage variable and the numerical results are discussed. To investigate the matrix failure model, purely in-plane transverse compression experiments are carried out on the specimens made by Glass/Epoxy to obtain the fracture surface angle and then a comparison is made with the calculated numerical results. Furthermore, shear failure of $({\pm}45)_s$ model is investigated and the obtained numerical results are discussed and compared with available experimental results. Some experiments are also carried out on the woven laminated composites to investigate the fracture pattern in the matrix failure mode and shown that the presented matrix failure model can be used for the woven composites. Finally, the obtained numerical results for stress based fiber kinking model and improved ones (strain based model) are discussed and compared with each other and with the available results. The results show that these models can predict the kink band angle approximately.
This paper demonstrates the impact stresses and wave propagation characteristics of glass/epoxy laminates subjected to the low-velocity impact by a steel ball theoretically and experimentally. A plate finite element model in conjunction with experimental contact laws is used for the theoretical investigation. The specimens for statical indentation and impact test are composed of $[0/45/0/-45/0]_28 and [90/45/90/-45/90]_28$ stacking sequences and have clamped-simply supported boundary conditions. Finally, these two results are compared and then the impulsive stress and wave propagation characteristics of this laminated composite are studied.
