  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of income-led growth path induced by government and consumption expenditures. Six of Nordic countries, Latin American countries and South Korea are selected for this purpose due to the fact that these countries have been pursuing income-led growth policy for more than the last decade except South Korea. The structural equation is formulated based on the government and consumption expenditures with lagged variable, and the GLMs estimation is employed for empirical analysis. Although the impacts are not overwhelmingly effective, empirical evidence suggests that income-led growth path contributes to stimulate economic activities which are associated with increasing in national income in Nordic countries and South Korea. However, the income-led growth path is quite weakly operated. Furthermore, it is even unstable in Latin American countries. In addition to this, the policy target would rather be focused on middle consumption group than low consumption group. Overall, it would be concluded that the income-led growth policy should be implemented for complementary purpose. And, it also has to be mentioned that sustainable growth may not be achievable by this policy.

  • Though oral microgranisms were among the first to be observed by humans, the interest in oral microbiology lagged. When it became apparent that the oral microflora did influence systemic disease of the body, interest was aroused in the nature and kinds of the microgranisms. The risk of infection in dental procedures is due to the abundant flora of the mouth. This hazard can be reduced to some extent by the use of a local disinfectant. The present studies were undertaken to evaluate and compare the various disinfectants which are commonly used in clinics and hospitals. The results were as follows. 1. The bactericidal activity of the disinfectants mainly depends upon the kinds of the agents, not upon the kinds of the microorganisms. 2. In H₂O₂(3%), the bactericidal activity was greatly related to the contact time. So, at least 4 minitues of contract time was required to use it as an oral antiseptic. 3. In ethyl alcohol (70%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus salivarius surived a little after 15 seconds of contact time, but, no other colony was discovered after more than 15 seconds of contact time in any kins of microorganisms. 4. Merthiolate (0.1%) showed low antibacterial activity, more in Gram-positive organisms and less in Gram-negative organisms. 5. Benzalkonium chloride (0.1%) and povidone-iodine (10%) showed the most excellent results, revealing no surviving organisms only after 14 seconds of contact time.

  • The primary purpose of this study was to examine to what extent adolescents' daily self-evaluation mediates the effect of experiencing intimacy in parent-adolescent interactions on positive peer interactions the next day, even after controlling for gender and grade level. We employed a daily diary method for seven days in a sample of 452 Korean adolescents, collecting checklist data at the end of each day. Data were analyzed by using hierarchical linear modeling. According to moderated multilevel mediation analyses, the variance of self-evaluation explained 83% of the variance in the lagged effect of parental intimacy on the next day peer interaction even after the upper-level effects of gender and grade level were accounted for. Forth graders were more likely than 7th graders to have a more positive view of themselves when they experienced parental intimacy the previous day. Girls were less likely to experience positive peer interactions when they perceived less intimacy with their parents the day before. Results suggested that it would be most effective for peer relationship programs to teach parents and adolescents how to experience intimacy in their daily interactions, particularly in ways that help adolescents to think more positively about themselves. It would be helpful for parents to learn about various ways to compliment and encourage the adolescent child in everyday conversations. Lastly, findings in grade level differences also suggest that these programs might be especially effective for 4th graders more than 7th graders.

  • The purpose of this thesis is to elucidate the exchange between the East and the West during the 17th century through analyzing the oriental influences described in paintings in Delft school, a trade port of East India Company. The scope of this study focused on the 37 pieces of works by Johannes Vermeer and 31 pieces of the paintings by Pieter de Hooch, which are all the existing work, as analysis targets. The resources of this study were from previous papers about the history of costumes, paintings and culture, Internet sources and other qualitatively analyzed articles. The items that the study looked into were Delft porcelains and Delft tiles, Turkey carpets, costumes and accessories pearl earrings and headdresses. The study looked into oriental factors observed in each of these items, and analyzed them. In terms of oriental factors that are frequently observed in paintings, porcelains (100%), Deft tiles (100%), pearl earrings (100%) and (most) carpets (92.3%) turned out to have oriental nature, but this was not the case with head dresses (7.7%) and clothing (0.3%). These results happen to coincide with the previous investigation in that the oriental factor was reflected in the culture first, while the effects on costumes significantly lagged behind. This progress in cultural exchange can be seen through the noted use of Chinoiserie, a technique that is representative of the Chinese culture, in the 18th century. Through Japonism, the influence of Japanese culture into Europe was introduced, in detail, in 19th century. These results suggest that there are sufficient amount of sources that could be used to study the effect of orientalism to the Western culture. This study intends to look at how the oriental culture affected those of Europe by researching the Delft school of Netherlands during the 17th century.

  • A dynamic model, which combined time series model with distributed-lag model, is applied to understand the relationship between rainfall and groundwater level. In the model, rainfall with distribution lags and past groundwater level as a dependent variables were used to estimate present groundwater level. The distribution of the lagged rainfall effects for groundwater levels was modeled by Almon polynomials. The model was applied to Banglim and Tanbu groundwater stations in Pyungchang river and Bocheong stream watershed which are representative basins for International Hydrological Program (IHP). The dynamic model represents observed groundwater levels very well and can be used to predict the levels. The model parameters reflect hydraulic characteristics of aquifer. In addition, from the parameters it appears that the increase in groundwater level due to rainfall takes place significantly within first two days of the rainfall event. The rainfall of the order of 18mm/day and 30mm/day at Banglim and Tanbu, respectively, had no significant effect on the groundwater levels.

  • This paper investigates how real wages adjust to regional and cyclical shocks in the Korean labor market. Major findings are as follows. First, like most longitudinal studies in this literature, we find that real wages are strongly procyclical and more procyclical for men than for women. Second, consistent with the theory prediction of efficiency wages, both permanent and transitory components of real wages are negatively correlated with the local unemployment rate. Third, when overall and local unemployment rates compete in a wage equation (our preferred specification), current wages are dominantly affected by the overall rate, and the effect of the local rate is rather small. This rejects the Blanchflower and Oswald's hypothesis that wages are primarily determined by local labor market conditions. Finally, no lagged effects on wages are detected in the overall or local unemployment rate.

  • Field observation and numerical experiments with a two-dimensional depth-integrated model were undertaken in order to investigate some of the effects on the flow structure resulting from the construction of a bridge connecting Kohung Peninsula and the Narodo Islands on the southern coast of Korea. Tidal currents passing through the straits between the Narodo Islands showed that, although the phase lagged one hour behind that passing through the strait between Kohung Peninsula and Naenarodo Island, it still kept strong flows of more than 80cm/sec near the bottom. The seawater temperature and salinity within the study area seemed to be higher southward but uniform vertically. The results of the drogue experiments in the straits between the Narodo Islands showed that the drogues moved northward of Sayangdo in the early part of the flood tide, but southward in the late part of the flood tide and finally stopped a mile from the east coast of Surakdo. On the other hand, the numerical computation showed that the flow structures after construction of the bridge piers were basically in line with those before construction of the bridge piers, except for the slight variations of velocities in the vicinity of the bridge piers. A large scale clockwise circulation has been confirmed in the south area of Namsungri of Kohung Peninsula from the computational results of tide-induced residual currents. Referring to these computational results, the impact category on the flow structures due to the bridge piers construction has been estimated to be within around 2km. The results were in good agreement with the field observations.

  • This study tested the possibility of applying the integrated social cognitive career theory for workers with disabilities to explore ways of predicting and enhancing their subjective well-being. It analyzed 952 adults who were employed for three years, among the workers who had participated in the Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled from 2016 to 2018. The results showed that disability acceptance was positively related to occupational self-efficacy, job satisfaction, and life satisfaction with statistical significance, and that occupational self-efficacy had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between job satisfaction and disability acceptance. Moreover, both auto-regressive and cross-lagged effects between disability acceptance and job satisfaction were found to be statistically significant. These findings imply that disability acceptance and occupational self-efficacy can be regarded as important factors to increase the subjective well-being of workers with disabilities.

  • Long-span structures, such as bridges, can experience different seismic excitations at the supports due to spatially variability of ground motion. Regarding current bridge designing codes, it is just EC 2008 that suggested some regulations to consider it and in the other codes almost ignored while based on some previous studies it is found that the effect of mentioned issue could not be neglected. The current study aimed to perform a comprehensive study about the effect of spatially varying ground motions on the dynamic response of a reinforced concrete bridge under asynchronous input motions considering soil-structure interactions. The correlated ground motions were generated by an introduced method that contains all spatially varying components, and imposed on the supports of the finite element model under different load scenarios. Then the obtained results from uniform and non-uniform excitations were compared to each other. In addition, the effect of soil-structure interactions involved and the corresponding results compared to the previous results. Also, to better understand the seismic response of the bridge, the responses caused by pseudo-static components decompose from the total response. Finally, an incremental dynamic analysis was performed to survey the non-linear behavior of the bridge under assumed load scenarios. The outcomes revealed that the local site condition plays an important role and strongly amplifies the responses. Furthermore, it was found that a combination of wave-passage and strong incoherency severely affected the responses of the structure. Moreover, it has been found that the pseudo-static component's contribution increase with increasing incoherent parameters. In addition, regarding the soil condition was considered for the studied bridge, it was found that a combination of spatially varying ground motions and soil-structure interactions effects could make a very destructive scenarios like, pounding and unseating.

  • The objectives of this study were to i) investigate genetic performance for linear type traits of individual Holstein dairy cows, especially focusing on comparative traits, and to estimate genetic variances for these traits using actual data, and ii) compare genetic performance and improvement of progeny by birth country of the cows. Linear type traits defined with five comparative traits on this study were general stature composite (GSC), dairy capacity composite (DCC), body size composite (BSC), foot and leg composite (FLC), and udder composite (UDC). These traits were scored from 1 to 6 with 1 = poor, 2 = fair, 3 = good, 4 = good plus, 5 = very good and 6 = excellent. Final scores (FS) were also included in this study. Data used was collected from the years 2000 to 2004 by the Korea Animal Improvement Association (KAIA). Only data of more than five tested cows by herd appraisal date and by sires having more than ten daughters were included to increase the reliability of the data analyses. A total of 30,204 records of the selected traits, which was collected from 26,701 individuals having pedigree information were used. Herd appraisal date, year of age, lactation stage (grouped by month), and time lagged for milking (in hours) were assumed as fixed effects on the model. Animal additive genetic effects considering pedigree relationship and residual errors were assumed with random effects. Year of age at appraisal date was classified from one to nine years of age, assigning the value of nine years of age for animals that were greater than or equal to nine years of age. From our results, the estimate for heritability was 0.463, 0.346, 0.473, 0.290, and 0.430 on GSC, DCC, BSC, FLC and UDC, respectively. The estimate for FS heritability was 0.539. The greatest breeding values for GSC were estimated for Canada, with the breeding values for American lines increasing for 10 years starting in 1989 but tending to decrease after that until 2004. For DCC, the breeding values for American and Canadian lines showed similar patterns until 1999, after which the breeding values for the American lines declined sharply. For BSC, data from Korea, Canada and the USA followed similar trends overall except when the breeding values of the American lines decreased starting in 1999. Overall, the methods used to evaluate genetic performance in this study were acceptable and allowed for the discovery of differences by country of genetic origin, likely due in part to the American use of selection indexes based primarily on milk yield traits until methods for evaluating other traits began to emerge.
