Wakeby Distribution and the Maximum Likelihood Estimation Algorithm in Which Probability Density Function Is Not Explicitly Expressed

  • The studied in this paper is a new algorithm for searching the maximum likelihood estimate(MLE) in which probability density function is not explicitly expressed. Newton-Raphson's root-finding routine and a nonlinear numerical optimization algorithm with constraint (so-called feasible sequential quadratic programming) are used. This algorithm is applied to the Wakeby distribution which is importantly used in hydrology and water resource research for analysis of extreme rainfall. The performance comparison between maximum likelihood estimates and method of L-moment estimates (L-ME) is studied by Monte-carlo simulation. The recommended methods are L-ME for up to 300 observations and MLE for over the sample size, respectively. Methods for speeding up the algorithm and for computing variances of estimates are discussed.

  • The work presented in this paper includes material characterisation and an investigation of suitability in seismic dampers for two commercially available NiTi-alloys, along with a numerical analysis of a new damper system employing composite NiTi-wires. Numerical simulations of the new damper system are conducted, using Brinson's one-dimensional constitutive model for shape memory alloys, with emphasis on the system's energy dissipation capabilities. The two alloys tested showed some unwanted residual strain at temperatures higher than $A_f$, possibly due to stress concentrations near inclusions in the material. These findings show that the alloys are not ideal, but may be employed in a seismic damper if precautions are made. The numerical investigations indicate that using composite NiTi-wires in a seismic damper enhances the energy dissipation capabilities for a wider working temperature range.

  • A supercavitating vehicle has a speed of more than 300 km/h in water. A numerical analysis of the flow around a supercavitating vehicle must deal with a multiphase flow consisting of the water, vapor and exhaust gas because the vehicle is powered by roket propulsion. The effect of the exhaust gas on the vehicle is an important part in the study of the performance of the supercavitating vehicle. In the present study, the effect of the exhaust gas on the drag of vehicle was investigated by conducting numerical analysis. When there is no exhaust gas, drag of vehicle is affected by re-entrant. In the case with rocket propulsion, the exhaust gas reduces the influence of re-entrant. The exhaust gas also creates Mach disk and it changes drag profile.

  • In this study, the evaluation of the aerodynamic characteristics of the NREL Phase VI Rotor System has been performed, for the 7 m/s upwind case using commercial FEA and CFD tools which are ANSYS Mechanical 12.1 and CFX 12.1. The initial operating conditions of the rotor blade include a $3^{\circ}$ tip pitch angle. A numerical simulation was carried out on only the rotor parts, excluding the tower structure based on the equivalent stiffness model, to consider the aeroelastic effect for the numerical simulation using the loosely coupled 2-way fluid-structure interaction method. The blade root bending moment was monitored in real time to obtain reasonable results. To verify the analysis results, the numerical simulation results were compared with the measurements in the form of the root bending moment and the pressure distributions of the NREL/NASA Ames wind tunnel test.

  • In flip chip technology, the conventional solder bump has been replaced with a copper (Cu) pillar bump owing to its higher input/output (I/O) density, finer pitch, and higher reliability. However, Cu pillar bump technology faces several issues, such as interconnect shorting and higher low-k stress due to stiffer Cu pillar structure when the conventional reflow process is used. Therefore, the thermal compression bonding (TCB) process has been adopted in the flip chip attachment process in order to reduce the package warpage and stress. In this study, we investigated the package warpage induced during the TCB process using a numerical analysis. The warpage of the TCB process was compared with that of the reflow process.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the stability behavior of steel cable-stayed bridges by comparing the buckling loads obtained by means of finite element methods with eigen-solver. In recent days, cable-stayed bridges dramatically attract engineers' attention due to their structural characteristics and aesthetics. They require a number of design parameters and present a high degree of static indetermination, especially for long span bridges. Cable-stayed bridges exhibit several nonlinear behaviors concurrently under normal design loads due to the individual nonlinearity of substructures such as the pylons, stay cables, and bridge deck, and their interactions. The geometric nonlinearities arise mainly from large displacements of cables. Strong axial and lateral forces acting on the bridge deck and pylons cause structural nonlinear behaviors. The interaction is among the substructures. In this paper, a typical three-span steel cable-stayed bridge with a variety of design parameters has been investigated. The numerical results indicate that the design parameters such as the ratio of $L_1/L$ and $I_p/I_b$ are important for the structural behavior, where $L_1$ is the main span length, L is the total span length of the bridge, $I_p$ is the moment of inertia of the pylon, and $I_b$ is the moment of inertia of the bridge deck. When the ratio $I_p/I_b$ increases, the critical load decreases due to the lack of interaction among substructures. Cable arrangements and the height of pylon are another important factors for this type of bridge in buckling analysis. According to numerical results, the bridges supported by a pylon with harp-type cable arrangement have higher critical loads than the bridges supported by a pylon with fan-type cable arrangement. On contrary, the shape of the pylon does not significantly affect the critical load of this type of bridge. All numerical results have been non-dimensionalized and presented in both tabular and graphical forms.

  • Recently, electric vehicles and hybrid cars are being promoted as alternatives to reduce automobile emissions. Generally, thin sheet materials such as aluminum alloy AA300X and cold-rolled steel sheet such as JIS-G-3141 are used for the container for the lithium-ion secondary batteries. In this study, a multi-stage deep drawing process is used to produce a rectangular cup from thin stainless steel sheet material, SUS409L, with an initial blank thickness of 0.4mm for the battery container application. Numerical simulations of the first through the fifth stages for the multi-stage deep drawing with thin SUS409L sheet were conducted using LS-Dyna3D Implicit/Explicit. Special consideration was given to the deformation characteristics due to the normal anisotropy of the sheet material. The numerical simulations were conducted with both isotropic properties and the anisotropic properties of the initial blank material. An unexpected forming failure, barreling in the bottom region of the deep drawn rectangular cup, was observed. This failure mode can be avoided by additional ironing thickness control during the process.

  • The infrageneric chemotaxonomy of 9 species of Tabebuia (Bignoniaceae) expressed in terms of synthetic numerical indices, indicate that they are closely related. The dendrogram of cluster analysis is suggestive of splitting of species studied, into 4 clusters.

  • In this paper, wave numerical modeling was experimented for the analysis of impact factors for the wave transmission as the incident wave and topographic conditions in the narrow channel sea. Recently, Although the results of many researcher for the wave modelling, numerical equations have limited to simulation of wave transformation effects. Despite of thispresent problems, the models was used to design the coastal structures in barrow channel sites. Finally, this paper estimated the wave model(mild slope eq. model) as the analysis of the wave energy transmission according to changing of impact factors(width of channel, bottom slope in channel, incident wave angle, wave period). As the results of numerical experiment, the major impact factors which influence to wave energy transmission were the width of channel and incident wave direction. But in the case that the width of channel is larger than 3L(L=Length of wave), the reduction of wave energy was small.

Numerical Analysis of the Flow Characteristics of High-Pressure Injection Nozzle for Machine Tools (공작기계용 HP Holder 분사노즐 유동특성에 관한 수치해석)

  • In this study, the flow characteristics of an injection nozzle installed in a high-pressure holder for improving productivity were determined. The inlet velocity, nozzle inflow angle, and nozzle outlet diameter were selected as design factors having an influence on the flow characteristics, and numerical analysis was conducted for these factors. As the inlet velocity is high and the nozzle outlet diameter is small, the pressure and velocity of the injected flow are high. In the case of the nozzle inflow angle, the variation of flow characteristics according to angle was slight, but the highest pressure and velocity were found at $15^{\circ}$. In addition, the possibility of chip elimination by the injected flow was analyzed on the basis of the numerical results.
