  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how a sense of community, community provisions, and acculturation attitudes towards Korean and American cultures are related to Korean immigrant parents' parental satisfaction. 477 surveys, consisting of 291 females and 186 males, were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results showed that a sense of community directly influenced acculturation attitudes toward American culture and parental satisfaction. Acculturation attitudes toward American culture also directly influenced parental satisfaction. A sense of community had significant indirect effects on parental satisfaction. These results imply that a sense of community within a larger community plays an important role in Korean immigrant parents' acquisition of identities as members of a new country. Building a sense of community is also important for them to experience less acculturation stress and become more satisfied with their parenting while adjusting to a new culture. Implications for practice and research are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop Emotional Intelligence(EI) educational program for Korean-American children. This program was developed on the basis of instructional designing theory, and its effctviveness was investigated by empirical research. A total of 100 ten- and thirteen-year-old children attending a Korean school in the state of Minnesota, USA, participated in the research. The treatment consisted of 12 courses carried out over 12 weeks. When the emotional intelligence of the experimental and control group were compared at the end of the application, the experimental group showed significantly higher scores than control group on the EI and emotional regulation scores.

  • Line graphs are powerful tools in conveying complicated relationships and ideas because line graphs show the relationship that exists between two continuous variables. Also, line graphs can show readers the variations in variables and correlate two variables in a two dimensional space. For these reasons, line graphs have a significant role in physics, especially kinematics. To what extent are Korean college and secondary students able to understand kinematics graphs? Is there a difference between American students and Korean students in interpreting kinematics graphs? The TUG-K instrument (Test of Understanding Graphs in Kinematics) was administered to students in both countries. The results show the difference between American students and Korean students by TUG-K objective. Also, the results are discussed in terms of a graph comprehension theory.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate a specific character on products of American-cotton(Kobong) with cultivated in Sinbong-dong, Sangju City from 1997 to 2003 years. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The Kobong cotton of producted in Sangju city was superior in quality than Korean-cotton. 2. The cotton producted in 1998, 2002 and 2003 was inferior in quality than the anther producted cotton. The reasons was a heavy rain at 1998, Rusa typhoon at 2002 and Maemi typhoon at 2003 in sangju city. But Kobong-cotton was superior in quality than the Korean-cotton. Since it is so, Kobong(New improved variety of American-cotton) was superior in quality than the another kinds(Korean-cotton) from producted of cotton fibers

  • The purpose of this research is to measure the sensibility and preference of American consumers for domestically-manufactured cotton fabrics through 7-points scale questionnaires and the 4-dimensions and 8-axes system. The key words included such images as masculine-feminine, new-old, casual-classic, and ambiguous-orderly. The images of cotton fabrics were classified through a cluster analysis. This research also included an investigation of relationship between sensibilities for cotton fabrics and their physical characteristics. The sensibilities of cotton fabrics were classified into 4 groups: 'feminine sensibility,' 'masculine sensibility,' 'new sensibility,' and 'casual sensibility.' This result represents that American consumers' sensibility is simpler than Koreans'. The order of preference was 'feminine sensibility', 'masculine sensibility', 'new sensibility', and 'casual sensibility.' The sensibilities of cotton fabrics were explained significantly by stiffness, weight, weft density, value, and chroma. Specifically, those were more influenced by color characteristics such as value, chroma, and hue than by physical characteristics. We should be able to tell a difference in the reaction of a trading country's consumers and domestic consumers to domestically-manufactured cotton fabrics through comparing this research with the previous work(Shin & Lee, 2002). Additionally, we will be able to establish a basic strategy for successfully advancing Korean fabrics into the American domestic textile industry. In this way we can expect to increase the competitive power of our domestic clothes brands.

  • All kinds of commerces are begun from the contract and the claims are frequently raised by the problem in the contracts. Therefore, the negotiation is very important to make a contract and resolve the claim. This article compared and analyzed the negotiation practice of Korean, American and Islam to strengthen the negotiation power of the Korean domestic companies and suggested the some guidelines when the Korean companies negotiate with the foreign companies. For the negotiator to make a effective negotiation with the foreigners and a make the negotiation performance, The negotiator has to prepare for the negotiation practice and strategy of the foreign countries. Secondly, the negotiator has to be accustomed to the foreign country and make the win-win strategy by giving the benefit to the foreign company as well as him. Especially, in the negotiation with American, it is very necessary that the negotiator persuade him logically by preparing the objective data and include the lawyer into the negotiation team. In the negotiation with Islam, making the personal relationship and, if possible, frequent contact with the person who has the responsibility in the contract is very important.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how immigrant Korean American parents' aspirations for children's educational attainment are related to their childrearing behavior, their beliefs about the nature of children's intelligence, their level of acculturation, and their beliefs about achievement. One hundred and twenty five immigrant Korean mothers in the United States participated in the study. The present study found that parental expectation for a daughter's educational attainment was significantly related to the mother's educational level. The results of regression analysis also indicated that for daughters, the significant predictors for parents' aspirations for children's educational attainment were the mothers' educational level and parental beliefs about achievement; for sons, significant predictors were the mothers' educational level and parental nurturance.

  • We can easily recognize the voices already known to us. But what about unknown voices? Is there any relationship between voices and the images triggered by the voices? Actually, this question has been partly addressed by Moon(2000, 2002). The current study aims at shedding some more lights on the topic by investigating the relationship between unknown foreign voices and the images triggered by them. Speech samples from 16 American males and females (8 each) were recorded and 180 Korean subjects without any knowledge of the American Speakers were asked to match the voices with the corresponding photos. And the number of corrects matches between voices and pictures of the current study was less than that of Korean-speakers and Korean-listeners case. But in terms of the majority matches, regardless of correctness, the present study showed a similar trend: that is, there is more than a chance relationship between voices and the images triggered by the voices.

  • Two recent novels on the Korea War, Lark and Termite and The Coldest Night, focus on two particularly disturbing incidents of the Korean War: the No Gun Ri massacre and the battle of the Changjin Reservoir. The novels explore the ways in which these ugly episodes of the war revise the official memory of the Cold War and resonate with the lives of those within the U.S. After excavating and examining the relevance of the Korean War, they simulate the older paradigm of returning to domesticity, reflecting not only the cultural and political tendency of the 1950s but also that of the public responses to the 9/11. This paper intends to read the significance of the treatment of the two novels on the Korean War as well as the limits therein to understand the implications of the shifts in the American public memory of the War.

  • This study was conducted as part of a summer Korean language and culture program at a university in Korea, aimed at examining the changes in intercultural sensitivity among American students who participated in the program, as well as the Korean students who served as their language partners. The research utilized a mixed-method approach combining qualitative and quantitative analysis. To derive research findings, pre- and post-program Intercultural Sensitivity Scale surveys were administered to participating students and semi-structured interview data were collected from a randomly selected group of six students. The research findings indicated that among a total of twenty-seven students including both American and Korean students, significant changes in intercultural sensitivity were observed in the domain of Interaction Engagement. Furthermore, fourteen American students showed significant changes in their Interaction Confidence, while the Korean students who participated as language partners did not exhibit significant changes in the five subdomains of intercultural sensitivity.
