하계 동해의 해양폐기물 분포와 조성에 관한 연구 (Distribution and Composition of Floating Debris in the East Sea during the Summer Season)

  • Floating debris was observed using a training ship, KAYA, of Pukyong National University with cruising speed of about 10-12 knot during July 12~25, 2003. The area sampled was the East Sea enclosed by 3 nations, namely, Korea, Japan and Russia, and was divided into 68 unit segments on survey routes [Fig. 1]. Debris fabrication materials were categorized with 6 items, e.g., man-made or natural wood items, paper and cardboard, nylon rope, styrofoam, vinyl and plastic, floating metal and glass containers. All identified items within $100{\pm}10 m$ wide band were recorded but ignored if beyond this boundary. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The average numbers of debris per unit area, $1km^2$, were found as 16.3 pieces (items) in the sea. 2. The highest densities of numbers, $32.3pieces/km^2$, were discovered in vicinity of the Oki strait of Japan, area of 'NEK' in Fig. 1. 3. Especially, styrofoam item only was composed to 63.6% of all in the sea of 'SD', located in the southern part of Dokdo Island, Korea. The item seems to be derive from the Southern Sea of Korea. 4. Therefore, comparing the distribution of debris numbers (the results of above 2 and 3) with flow patterns of Kuroshio currents, it was shown that their relation was good agree each other. Further more surveys are being conducted and a much wider coverage can be achieved with other countries, then it can be obtained that the East Sea is polluted to some extent, where is the origin of debris, and the finding of floating routes and stationary sea.

스티로폼 부자 해양쓰레기 대응 정책 개발과 우선순위 평가 (Development and Priority Setting of Policy Measures on Styrofoam Buoy Marine Debris)

  • 스티로폼 부자는 한국의 해변 쓰레기 중 가장 높은 발생 빈도를 보이는 쓰레기 중의 하나이지만 정부 정책은 소극적으로 이루어져왔다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위한 정책을 개발할 목적으로 2010년부터 2012년까지 연차별로 워크숍을 개최하였다. 문제의 탐색과 공유, 브레인스토밍 과정을 통해 정책 대안을 도출하고, 계층분석과정을 통해 정책 대안들의 우선순위를 평가하였다. 우선순위 평가에는 총 56명이 참가하였고 일관성 기준을 통과한 40명의 의견을 분석하였다. 16개 정책 대안들 중 지자체 공공근로 등을 활용한 해안정화 활동이 가장 높은 점수를 받았으며, 대체 부자 및 양식법 개발 등 조사 연구 사업이 다른 사업들보다 높은 점수를 받았다. 정책 대안을 평가하는 기준에 대해서는 실행가능성, 효과성, 효율성, 수용가능성의 순서로 중요하게 평가되었다. 합리적인 정책 설계 절차에 따라 다양한 이해관계자들이 참여함으로써 스티로폼 해양쓰레기 문제에 대해 보다 현실성 있는 정책 대안들이 발굴될 수 있었다.

조업기인 어업쓰레기 발생추정량에 대한 어업 및 해양환경 관련 정책 비교분석 (A Comparative Analysis of Fishery and Marine Environment-related Policies on Estimated Amount of Fishery Debris Caused by Fishing)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 조업기인 어업쓰레기 발생(추정)량에 대한 어업 및 해양환경 정책의 범주별 차이를 비교하고, 독립변수와 종속변수의 상관성을 분석하는 것이다. 독립변수는 세 가지로 구분되는데, 사전 예방정책, 현행 관리정책, 사후 대응정책이다. 사전 예방정책에는 친환경어업 지원사업, 제도적 예방활동, 물리적 차단 시설 설치가 있다. 현행 관리정책에는 관련 선박 운영, 어업질서 확립, 어업구조조정, 어장환경 개선이 해당된다. 사후 대응정책에는 하천~해안변 쓰레기 정화, 해양·침적·부유쓰레기 수거, 조업 중 인양쓰레기 수매, 어업관련 폐기물 처리, 해양쓰레기 피해복구가 포함된다. 측정지표는 각 사업별 결산액이다. 종속변수는 조업으로 인한 어업쓰레기 발생 추정량이고, 측정지표는 연안 통발 및 자망과 그 부속어구 유실량의 합이다. 평균순위 차이 검증결과 어업쓰레기 발생 추정량은 해역별로는 동해안이 가장 높게 나타났고, 기초자치단체별로는 시 지역이 가장 높게 나타났다. 해양환경 관련 결산액은 군 지역에서 가장 많이 투입하고 있었고, 대부분의 변수에서 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 어업쓰레기 발생 추정량과 관련있는 변수는 사후 정책 중 조업 중 인양쓰레기 수매 사업과 폐기물 처리 지원 사업이었다.

부유성 해양 폐기물에 의한 동지나해의 해양오염(I) - 해역별 수량 분포를 중심으로 - (Marine Pollution of the East China Sea by Floating Marine Debris(I) - Temporal quantity distribution of each zone -)

  • In order to analyze the influence of floating marine debris (FMD) in the East China Sea (ECS), a sighting survey was conducted from July 1st to July 14th, 2009 navigating about 966 km using a training vessel "Kaya (1,737 ton)" of Pukyong National University. The sampled zones are divided into 5 transect by observation day during the survey days and again specified with 45 segments per unit hour on the survey routes. The results of distribution of FMD are as follows: 1. The quantities of FMD at the central China Sea(CE) and northern part of Taiwan(NT) were found as total mean of 90.8 ea/hr, 56.7 ea/hr, respectively, and also 36.8 ea/hr, western part of Kyushu district(WJ), 10.7 ea/hr, 8.0 ea/hr, western(OK1) and northern part(OK2) of Okinawa, respectively. 2. Temporal variation of FMD is represented by depicting the sinusoidal curve as shape as tide in CE and OK1. 3. The higher sea surface temperature (SST) is as likely as if Kuroshio current exists strongly, the less quantities are decreased. On the other hand, the coastal zone of ECS and near of Yellow Sea are increased by lower SST.

한국 동해 연안어장의 부유성 폐기물 분포와 조성 (Distribution and Composition of Floating Debris in the East Coast of Korea)

  • Floating debris was recorded from a training ship, #1 Kwanaksan, of Pukyong National University with about 10 knots speed during August 19~26, 1996. The area sampled is the East Coast of Korea, divided into 33 unit segments on survey routes. Debris fabrication materials were categorized using the following; man-made or natural wood items, paper, cardboard, nylon rope, netting, styrofoam and plastics, floating metal and glass containers. All identified items within a $100{\pm}2m$ wide band were recorded but ignored if beyond this boundary. The results of distribution and composition of floating debris in the area are as follows: 1. The quantities of debris during the summer were distributed from 1.8~52 items per $km^2$. The most obvious trend is the widespread distribution of all debris. 2. The highest densities of all debris were discovered in the vicinity of Pusan and ills an area. Especially styrofoam & plastics were observed in 81% of sampled area, next is wood items, 9.1%. Nylon netting & rope was the least widespread pollutant. 3. The relationship between distribution of debris and surface currents of the area was not apparently revealed through this survey. Further surveys are being instigated, and from this it is hoped that a much wider coverage can be achived, perhaps on all sites of Southern and Western sea of Korea and contributed to the finding of sources,stationary area of debris.

한국 제주도와 중국 청도의 항로상에 부유하는 해양폐기물의 분포에 관한 연구 (The Distribution Characteristics of Floating Debris on the Cruising Routes from Cheju Island to Qindao Harbor in the Yellow Sea)

  • Floating debris was recorded from a training ship, Kaya, of Pukyong National University with about 12 knots speed at July 19~21, 1999 and July 24~26. The sampled area is the Yellow Sea (YS) connected from Cheju Is. of Korea to Qindao harbor of China, divided into 88 unit segments on survey routes. Debris fabrication materials were categorized with 6 items using the following; man-made or natural wood items, paper and cardboard, nylon netting and rope, styrofoams, vinyl and plastics, floating metal and glass containers. All identified items within a $120{\pm}20m$ wide band were recorded but ignored if beyond this boundary. The results of distribution of floating debris in the area are as follows: 1. The greatest quantities of marine debris discovered during the survey were $184pieces\;per\;km^2$ near Qindao harbor. The next polluted areas, Sohuksan islands, positioned in the eastern part of YS were scattered in about $40pieces/km^2$ or so. 2. Among items, woods, paper and cardboard, vinyl and plastics were found out near Qindao Coast of China. On the other hand, there were many styrofoams, nylon netting and rope near the area of Sohuksan islands in the eastern part of YS. 3. The distribution densities of western part of YS near Qindao are varied with largely range in items and quantities but those of the eastern part, near Sohuksan islands were nearly constant. 4. Styrofoams were composed of 63% among all debris in YS, next paper and cardboard 15%, and wood item, vinyl and plastics each 10%. Therefore, marine debris of YS is revealed that distribution characteristics and composition are very different in each area. These phenomena are concluded that they largely depend on the life styles in land and the utilities of the sea. And of items, styrofoams is dominated by the distribution pattern of YS. Furthermore, surveys are continuously being investigated, and from this it is hoped that a much wider coverage can be achieved, perhaps all sites of the YS and contributed to the finding sources, the stationary area and removal method of debris joined the flow patterns.

매개 중심성을 이용한 해양 플라스틱 폐기물의 경로 예측 및 효율적인 수거지점 제안 (Path Prediction and Suggestion of Efficient Collection Points for Marine Plastic Debris Based on Betweenness Centrality Analysis)

  • 우리나라에서 플라스틱으로 인한 해양오염이 심각함에도 불구하고 경로 예측 및 수거 방안에 대한 연구는 찾아보기 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 미국 해양대기청(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA)의 해양 표층해류 시뮬레이터(Ocean Surface CURrent Simulator, OSCURS)를 이용하여 2004년부터 2013년까지 계절별로 동 서해로 유입된 플라스틱 폐기물의 이동 경로를 예측하였고, 매개 중심성 분석을 통하여 효율적인 수거지점을 제안하였다. 효율적인 수거지점의 대부분이 계절과 상관없이 연안에 형성되었고, 그중에서도 동해는 울진 연안, 서해는 새만금-신안 연안이 플라스틱 폐기물을 효율적으로 수거할 수 있는 지역이었다.

An Unrecorded Species of the Genus Isobactrus (Acari, Halacaridae) Inhabiting Marine Plastic Debris from Jeju Island, Korea

  • We discovered a halacarid mite species, Isobactrus tuberculatus Abé, 1996, inhabiting marine plastic debris on the coast of Jeju Island, Korea. The key characteristics of these Korean specimens were consistent with those in the original description of specimens from Hokkaido, Japan, including the presence of tuberculate membranous cuticles between the anterior and posterior dorsal plates, fusion of the posterior epimeral plates I and II, tibia II with a bipectinate seta, tibiae III and IV each with five setae, and a pair of subgenital setae in females. However, two small morphological differences were noted: the distance between the anterior and posterior dorsal plates was shorter than that in Japanese specimens, and the location of dorsal seta-2 was closer to the anterior dorsal plate in Korean specimens. We herein provide detailed illustrations of I. tuberculatus, based on the Korean specimens, with a brief taxonomic comment on the similarities among allied congeneric species. The genus Isobactrus is first reported in Korea.

The Lago Sofia Conglomerate : Debris Flow to Hyperconcentrated Flow Deposits in a Cretaceous Submarine Channel, Southern Chile

  • The Lago Sofia conglomerates encased in the Cretaceous Cerro Toro Formation, southern Chile, represent a gigantic submarine channel system developed along a foredeep trough. The channel system consists of several tributaries along the trough margin and a trunk channel along the trough axis. Voluminous debris flows were generated ubiquitously along the tract of the submarine channel mainly by the failure of nearby channel banks or slopes. The flows transformed immediately into multiphase flows and resulted in very thick-bedded mass-flow deposits with a peculiar structure sequence. The mass-flow deposits commonly overlie fluted or grooved surfaces and consist of a lower division of clast-supported and imbricated pebble-cobble conglomerate with common basal inverse grading, and an upper division of clast- to matrix-supported and disorganized pebble conglomerate or pebbly mudstone with abundant intraformational clasts. The structure sequence suggests a temporal succession of a turbidity current, a bipartite hyperconcentrapted flow with active clast collisions near the flow base, and a cohesive debris flow probably with a rigid plug. The multiphase flow is interpreted to have resulted from transformation of clast-rich but cohesive debris flows. Cohesive debris flows appear to transform more easily into dilute flow types in subaqueous environments because they are apt to hydroplane. This is in contrast to the flow transitions in subaerial environments where noncohesive debris flows are dominant and difficult to hydroplane.
