Assessing Knowledge Structures for Public Research Institutes

  • This study uses a network approach to investigate the structural characteristics of sub-organizations within public research institutes in order to obtain their implications for organizational structures. We construct a network based on research similarities between sub-organizations because sub-organizations generally build their own research portfolios. We examine how sub-units are organized based on their structural features. The structural features are compared between three public research institutes in different countries: the Korean the Government-funded Research Institutes (GRIs), the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in Germany, and the National Laboratories (NLs) in the United States. The structural comparison helps to identify organizational characteristics and to differentiate between them. We found little common ground in the research areas between the GRIs because individual sub-organizations have distinct research portfolios. Therefore, the organizational hierarchy of research in the GRIs is less matured than it is in other public research institutes. This study suggests that the GRIs need to establish integrated strategies in order to strengthen the common knowledge base.

화력발전소 경보처리 시스템에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Alarm Processing System for Fossil Power Plant)

  • The purpose of multiple alarm processing is to give the operator the correct information and perception of the malfunction present in the plant. In this thesis, an APS(Alarm Processing System) is studied for fossil power plants. This APS is based on a cause-consequence trees in the knowledge representation aspect for alarm and plant and adapts alarm filtering methods using fired time information in the decision aspect. Through the cause-consequence trees and filtering methods, the Alarm Processing System finds the cause alarm among the fired multiple alarms and calculates the cause degree which represents the possibility of a fault occurring in the instruments of the plant with the information of fired alarm. The knowledge base is built via interviews and questionaries with the expert operators on the Seoul power plant unit 4. Finally, the validity of the studied APS is shown via simulations.

  • A prototype expert system for normal concrete mix design was developed using an technical consulting system development tool, EXSYS Professional. The knowledge contained in the system was obtained from the standard specifications of Korea Concrete Institute, American Concrete Institute and from the related British Standards. The knowledge base and user interface will be expanded to cover wider scopes of the problems. If the system is successfully developed as an operational system, it will produce a great deal of economic benefits by reducing the time and money needed to obtain an expert's judgement and experience in decision making for repetitive tasks related to concrete mix proportions.

  • This paper outlines a framework for a diagnosis of a complex system with uncertain information. Sensor validation ploys a vital role in the ability of the overall system to correctly determine the state of a system monitored by imperfect sensors. Here, emphases are put on the heuristic technology and post-processor for reasoning. Heuristic Sensor Validation (HSV) exploits deeper knowledge about parameter interaction within the plant to cull sensor faults from the data stream. Finally the modified probability distributions and validated data are used as input to the reasoning scheme which is the runtime version of the influence diagram. The output of the influence diagram is a diagnostic mapping from the symptoms or sensor readings to a determination of likely failure modes. Once likely failure modes are identified, a detailed diagnostic knowledge base suggests corrective actions to improve performance. This framework for a diagnostic expert system with sensor validation and reasoning under uncertainty applies in $HEATXPRT^{TM}$ a data-driven on-line expert system for diagnosing heat rate degradation problems in fossil power plants [1].

  • Computer aided process planning(CAPP) is a key for implementing CIM. It is bridge between CAD and CAM and translates the design information into manufacturing instructions. Generally, manufacturing is an area where intelligent systems will not be able to rely on methods requiring formalized knowledge. Manufacturing lacks a body of knowledge that is specific, formalized, and rigorous, and which can be coded as rules or procedures. Thus expertise in manufacturing is developed over a period of many years. Case-based reasoning(CBR) offers a new approach for developing intelligent system. In the case-based approach the problem solving experience of the experts is encoded in the form of cases. CBR's retrieval process can be divided to two step. The first step is matching step, and the second step is selection step. For selecting base case, new preference heuristics were introduced using similarity concept. Similarity concept has three has three dimensions, i.e. entity similarity, structural similarity, and goal similarity. In this paper, bolt's process planning was selected an application domain. Following the test result, the new preference heuristics were approved as a useful procedure in CAPP.

  • This paper describes an expert system for soldiers psychology diagnosis. In the field warfare, platoon leaders or company commanders have to diagnose his soldier's condition correctly. The expert systems, a field of artificial intelligence, can be appropriate approach for ill-structured paradigm. This use an UNIK system. This UNIK system is composed of UNIK-FRAME, UNIK-BWD, UNIK-WBI, UNIK-INDUCE and UNIK-Interface. Especially, UNIK-WBI system is very useful to display soldiers psychology diagnosis and so easy to use it. Any leader or commander can easily do this. This paper data is based on DSMIV. Through This expert system, combat power can be kept and accidents be protected.

  • This paper deals with the development of an expert system modeling by constructing a knowledge-based system of the dive recovery for anticrash on the ground or sea during the task of fighter aircraft. In an IBM PC / XT computer, a prototype dive recovery expert system is constructed using mu LISP-86 programming language, and is interconnected to the SAM SUNG RM-501 robot arm to test and simulate this model. The knowledge base of this model is composed of the dive recovery charts and the V-N envelope charts of F-4 D Phantom fighter aircraft. It is shown that the prototype expert system woks well and the feasibility of practical realization is valid.

  • 본 시스템은 현재 연구 개발중인 정보에이전트 시스템의 일부로서 특정분야에 대한 사용자의 관심 주제에 관련된 정보와 함께 적절한 문서를 제공하는 지식 기반 시스템이다. 이러한 목적을 위해서 본 시스템의 지식베이스는 구조적인 방식으로 표현된 BKB(Biology Knowledge Base)와 DIC(DICtionary)로 구성된다. DIC는 특정분야에서 일반적으로 사람들이 사용하는 용어와 학명을 기준으로 하는 시스템에서 사용하는 용어와의 관계와 그러한 용어들간의 동의어 관계를 갖고 있다. 또한 BKB는 동물에 관련된 지식베이스로써 상위.하위 개념과 함께 사용자가 원하는 정보를 제공하기 위해 객체의 속성과 이에 관계된 값들을 포함한다. 본 시스템은 문서를 검색할 때 사용자 초기 질의를 상위.하위 개념 그리고 동의어로 확장할 뿐만 아니라 사용자 의도의 정확한 표현을 위해서 제공하는 다양한 질의 형식에 따른 질의 처리 결과로도 확장하므로 효과적인 문서 검색 결과를 보인다.

  • The polishing tool unit is developed which can be attached on the machining center and automatic polishing system for die and mold is also established. So, experiments are carried out under the several polishing conditions. The polishing properties of automatic polishing operation such as surface roughness, stock removal and maximum profile valley depth are obtained and analyzed quantitatively for each polishing tool. The purpose of this study is to construct an expert system for optimal condition of die and mold automatic polishing using the knowledge base that is obtained in the polishing experiments and, to verify the feasibility of the expert system through the experiments. Using this expert system, unskilled operators will be able to obtain the knowledge and experience of an expert.

  • In order to extract some important information of a person from text, an extracting model was proposed. The person's name is recognized based on the maximal entropy statistic model and the training corpus. The sentences surrounding the person's name are analyzed according to the conceptual knowledge base. The three main elements of events, domain, situation and background, are also extracted from the sentences to construct the structure of events about the person.
