  • This paper introduces how we have designed and implemented an efficient starting line-up system of professional baseball players, using the forward chaining technology which is an expert system technology. The knowledge base adopted holds 286 players and 148 evaluation Items. Each player's competitiveness is measured as a numerical value in points through 2 different phases. The 1st phase point represents the static information of the target player and the 2nd his dynamic information. This paper gets a representative value of the player, which is used as the basis on which an efficient line-up system in views of both game environments and counterparts is constructed.

  • The thermal conductivity of water- and ethylene glycol-based nanofluids containing alumina $(Al_2O_3)$, zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide $(TiO_2)$ nanoparticles is measured by varying the particle diameter and volume fraction. The transient hot-wire method using an anodized tantalum wire for electrical insulation is employed for the measurement. The experimental results show that nanofluids have substantially higher thermal conductivities than those of the base fluid and the ratio of thermal conductivity enhancement increases linearly with the volume fraction. It has been found that the ratio of thermal conductivity enhancement increases with decreasing particle size but no empirical or theoretical correlation can explain the particle-size dependence of the thermal conductivity. This work provides, for the first time to our knowledge, a set of consistent experimental data over a wide range of nanofluid conditions and can therefore serve as a basis for developing theoretical models to predict thermal conduction phenomena in nanofluids.

  • A typical small firm in consumer goods sectors of developing countries is an OEM supplier to big MNCs. Lacking design and marketing capability, a small firm relies on the MNCs for survival but their long term growth is not guaranteed as the MNCs are always looking for, and ready to relocate to, cheaper production sites. In this light, we can say that there is something like "OEM trap" from which most firms from LDCs find difficult to move out (Lee 2005). In this situation, one way for long term growth and catch-up is to make a transition to the OBM (own brand manufacturer). But, the transition is not easy or even risky. This paper analyzes the cases of three companies in Korea to find out common features in their successful transition to OBM. They are Aurora World (a flush toy maker), Hankook Chinaware (a chinaware maker), and Hanacobi (a plastic-made food container maker with the Lock-and-Lock brand). These firms can be commonly characterized by 1) arranging access to external knowledge base and steady increase of in-house R&D efforts and capabilities leading to acquisition of formal IPRs and their management, and 2) establishment of global production networks with factories in lower-income countries as well as their own independent global marketing network.

  • The explosion of the Internet, and most recently e-commerce, has caused great interest in agent technologies. The development of virtual environments has also increased in the last few years. A growing number of real-time applications use graphics with photorealistic quality, especially in the field of training, but also in the areas of design and ergonomic research. We describe an attempt to develop a framework that provides customers with multimedia information and interactive experiences with a virtual shopping environment. The application presented consists on a virtual visit to a music -store where the user is guided by an intelligent agent named Lizeth which responds in real-time to user's requests with precise information about music, artist's biographies, prices and related products to help the user to make decisions. The potential of UML and the Java programming language is discussed to show their application in the field of intelligent agents as mediators on shopping processes. We conclude that the proposed framework leads to the creation of application with a potentially significant impact in the development of e-commerce systems embedded in virtual environments.

  • MANPro-based control is a novel control paradigm aimed at intelligent manufacturing systems on the basis of mobile agent-based negotiation process (MANPro). MANPro is a negotiation mechanism based on the agent-based control architecture and, especially, it adapts a mobile agent system called N-agent for the negotiation process. N-agent travels around the network of distributed manufacturing systems to acquire information, and it makes a decision for system control according to the obtained information. MANPro includes communication architecture and information architecture for intelligent shop floor control. MANPro also considers the following issues: (1) negotiation mechanism, (2) single-agent internal strategic policies, and (3) information model. Communication architecture concerns the first issue of the negotiation mechanism. It provides information exchanging mechanism with functional modules. In specific, N-agent is equipped with an intelligent reasoning engine with a built-in knowledge base. This reasoning engine is closely related to the single-agent internal strategic policies of the second issue. Finally, ontology-based information architecture addresses information models and provides a framework for information modeling on negotiation. In this paper, these three issues are addressed in detail and a framework of MANPro-based control is also proposed.

  • In this paper, we have designed and implemented cluttering classification systems- unsupervised classifiers-for the processing of satellite remote sensing images. Implemented systems adopt various design patterns which include a factory pattern and a strategy pattern to support various satellite images'formats and to design compatible systems. The clustering systems consist of sequential clustering, K-Means clustering, ISODATA clustering and Fuzzy C-Means clustering classifiers. The systems are tested by using a Landsat TM satellite image for the classification input. As results, these clustering systems are well designed to extract sample data for the classification of satellite images of which there is no previous knowledge. The systems can be provided with real-time base clustering tools, compatibilities and components' reusabilities as well.

  • Tidal phenomenon can be utilized by the wise and cautious mariner to safely perform his duties as pilot and navigator. It can be either a help or hindrance to the mariner. The principle of MULDAE which expresses the determination of the state of the tide based upon knowledge of the lunar date and it has been used in Korea since ancient times. The folk method of calculation was essentially based on an unsystematic division of the lunar month, traditionally using the numbers 7 or 8. As the lunar cycle is complete in 15 days the tidal cycle should also correspondence closely to the lunar date. This paper represents the first scientific attempt to systematically investigate this unique traditional method of tidal calculation and contains a comparison of the MULDAE and ordinary (solar based) tide calculation methods. MULDAE was compared with the standard tide table for standard and island ports in Korea from 1982 to 1985. This study concluded that MULDAE was indeed an accurate adn reliable predictor of tidal activity. Furthermore, the number 6 was found to be the correct divisor upon which to base MULDAE calculations Also a formula expressing MULDAE as a function was discovered. This research show that MULDAE can be applied nationwide and is a reliable and easy way to predict tides based upon mean figures for certain ports and island A calender showing MULDAE is presented here for the first time. A clear relationship between the MULDAE method of calculating tides and the use of ordinary tide tables is proven.
