  • The main cause of global warming is carbon dioxide generated from the use of fossil fuels, and active research on the reduction of carbon is in progress to slow down the increasing global warming. Wind turbines generate electricity from kinetic energy of wind and are considered as representative for an energy source that helps to reduce carbon emission. Since the kinetic energy of wind is proportional to the cube of the wind speed, the intensity of wind affects wind farm construction validity the most. Therefore, to organize a wind farm, validity analysis should be conducted first through measurement of the wind resources. To facilitate the approval and permission and reduce installation cost, measuring sensors should be installed at locations below the actual wind turbine hub. Wind conditions change in shape with air density, and air density is most affected by the variable sterrain and surface type. So the magnitude of wind speed depends on the ground altitude. If wind conditions are measured at a location below the wind turbine hub, the wind speed has to be extrapolated to the hub height. This correction of wind speed according to height is done with the Deacon equation used in the statistical analysis of previously observed data. In this study, the optimal Deacon equation parameter was obtained through the analysis of the correction of the wind speed error with the Deacon equation based on the characteristics of terrain.

  • The combustion characteristics of methane oxygen diffusion flames have been investigated to give basic information for designing industrial oxyfuel combustors. NOx reduction has become one of the most determining factors in the combustor design since the small amount of nitrogen is included from the current low cost oxygen production process. Flame lengths decreased with increasing fuel or oxygen velocity because of the enhancement of mixing effect. Correlation equation between flame length and turbulent kinetic energy was proposed. NOx concentration was reduced with increasing fuel or oxygen velocity because of the enhanced entrainment of the product gas into flame zone as well as the reduction of residence time in combustion zone.

  • Riblets with longitudinal grooves along the streamwise direction have been used as an effective flow control technique for drag reduction. A flexible micro-riblet with v-grooves of peak-to-peak spacing of $300{\mu}m$ was made using a MEMS fabrication process of PDMS replica. The flexible micro-riblet was attached on the whole surface of a NACA0012 airfoil with which grooves are aligned with the streamwise direction. The riblet surface reduces drag coefficient about $7.9{\%}\;at\;U_o=3.3m/s$, however, it increases drag about $8{\%}\;at\;U_o=7.0m/s$, compared with the smooth airfoil without riblets. The near wake has been investigated experimentally far the cases of drag reduction ($U_o\;=\;3.3 m/s$) and drag increase ($U_o\;=\;7 m/s$). Five hundred instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each experimental condition using the cross-correlation PIV velocity field measurement technique. The instantaneous velocity fields were ensemble averaged to get spatial distribution of turbulent statistics such as turbulent kinetic energy. The experimental results were compared with those of a smooth airfoil under the same flow condition. The micro-riblet surface influences the near wake flow structure largely, especially in the region near the body surface

  • Hangzhou Bay Bridge spans the Hangzhou Bay and is located at Zhejiang province in the southeast seacoast of China. The total length of the bridge is 36 km. The bridge is composed of bridge approaches made up of multi-span prestressed concrete box girders and two cable-stayed bridges over the north and south navigable spans respectively. The seismic response analysis of the bridge model shows that if the navigable spans are designed as the routine earthquake-resistance system, the displacements and internal forces in pylons, piers and deckes are too large to satisfy the anti-seismic requirement of the structure. Therefore, the seismic reduction design was carried out by using viscous dampers to dissipate the kinetic energy of the structure both longitudinally and transversely. Using the vibration reduction system and aiming at the reasonable optimal goal, the purpose to reduce the seismic responses in south and north navigable spans has been achieved.

  • This paper outlines extraction potential of tidal stream resources from the simplified channel in which flow is driven by a head difference between inlet and outlet. Energy extraction alters the flow within a simple channel, and extraction of 10% energy flux in a natural channel would give rise to a flow speed reduction of about 5.7%. If 20% of the undisturbed energy flux is extracted, the flow speed is reduced by 11.3%. The simple channel also suggests that extractable energy might be higher if flow speed reductions are considered acceptable.

  • An optimal sensor placement (OSP) method based on structural subsection technique (SST) and model reduction technique was proposed for modal identification of truss structures, which was conducted using genetic algorithm (GA). The constraints of GA variables were determined by SST in advance. Subsequently, according to model reduction technique, the optimal group of master degrees of freedom and the optimal objective function value were obtained using GA in a case of the given number of sensors. Correspondingly, the optimal number of sensors was determined according to optimal objective function values in cases of the different number of sensors. The proposed method was applied on a scaled jacket offshore platform to get its optimal number of sensors and the corresponding optimal sensor layout. Then modal kinetic energy and modal assurance criterion were adopted to evaluate vibration energy and mode independence property. The experiment was also conducted to verify the effectiveness of the selected optimal sensor layout. The results showed that experimental modes agreed reasonably well with numerical results. Moreover the influence of the proposed method using different optimal algorithms and model reduction technique on optimal results was also compared. The results showed that the influence was very little.

  • In this research, we presented the regenerative braking algorithms considering fuel economy and charging oftenness, and also analyzed these algorithms. The first algorithm was the regenerative braking algorithm for the ideal recovery of kinetic energy. The HEV using this algorithm had high fuel economy, on the other hand frequent charging was occurred. The second algorithm was the regenerative braking algorithm for reduction of the charging oftenness. Using this algorithm, the HEV had the low charging oftenness and small loss of fuel economy.

  • In order to evaluate the potential of partial hydrocarbon substitution to improve the safety of hydrogen use in general and the performance of internal combustion engines in particular, the outward propagation and development of surface cellular instability of spark-ignited spherical premixed flames of mixtures of hydrogen, hydrocarbon, and air were experimentally studied at NTP (normal temperature and pressure) condition in a constant-pressure combustion chamber. With propane being the substituent, the laminar burning velocities, the Markstein lengths, and the propensity of cell formation were experimentally determined, while the laminar burning velocities and the associated flame thicknesses were computed using a recent kinetic mechanism. Results show substantial reduction of laminar burning velocities with propane substitution, and support the potential of propane as a suppressant of both diffusional-thermal and hydrodynamic cellular instabilities in hydrogen-air flames.

  • A study on the modeling of the methane Chemical Looping Reforming system was carried out. It is aimed to predict the temperature and concentration behavior of the product through modeling of oxygen carrier fixed bed reactors composed of multiple stacks. In order to design the reaction system, first of all, the flow rate of the hydrogen to be produced was calculated. The flow rate ratio of the oxidation/reduction reactor was calculated considering the heat of reaction between adjacent reactors. Finally, in this paper, kinetic model including empirical coefficients was suggested.

  • Voltammogram analysis of U(VI) reduction at electrochemically non-pretreated/pretreated Ti electrodes in nitric acid and hydrazine($N_2$H$_4$)/protonated hydrazine($N_2$H$_{5}$$^{+}$) media was done in order to determine the effect of hydrazine form and Ti electrode condition on the reduction of U(VI) in nitric acid. In the case of non-pretreated Ti electrode, the reduction in nitric acid and hydrazine mono-hydrate solution needed a high activation overpotential and was affected by the ratio of hydrazine to nitric acid rather than by only absolute amount of hydrazine because of the decrease of solution conductivity and increase of iR drop, which were caused by proton consumption in the solution by the hydrazine. In the case of pretreated Ti electrode in nitric acid and protonated hydrazine solution, the reduction current peaks of U(VI) were clearer and higher enough to perform a kinetic analysis, compared with the case with the non-pretreated Ti electrode at the same potential, and the behavior was strongly affected by nitric acid. The presence of hydrazine was important in the reduction of U(VI) at the pretreated Ti electrode for preventing the reoxidation of U(IV), but the concentration of protonated hydrazine was not.t.
