Purpose: Many studies have reported increased muscle activities in treatments using kinesio tape. However, most studies have focused on only muscles, so the effects of kinesio tape on structures other than the muscles are unknown. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of kinesio tape for the fascia on trunk muscle activity during plank. Methods: Eighteen healthy participants took part in this study. The participants were asked to perform the plank in two conditions: on stable surface and unstable surface. Two kinesio tapes were attached along the spiral line introduced in the anatomy train. EMG was measured in each condition. EMG data were collected before and after attaching kinesio tape in each condition. Repeated analysis of variance (repeated ANOVA) was conducted to compare EMG activities levels between conditions. Results: EMG activities levels of trunk muscles, especially rectus abdominis and erector spinae activities were significantly increased during the plank with KT on both stable and unstable surfaces. Conclusion: KT applying on the fascia of targeted muscle increases the muscle activity. Therefore, we can also focus on the fascia to increase muscle activities not only on muscles.
Purpose: This study aims to examine whether the kinesio tape method can relax perimenstrual symptoms and decrease the menstrual pain of those who complain of perimenstrual discomforts. Method: This study has been designed to use the nonequivalent control group in the pre and post-test. The data have been collected from unmarried females complaining of perimenstrual discomfort and living in D city from the 2nd of February through the 10th of April, 2002. An experimental group of 32 people and a control group of 35 people were chosen, and they were first investigated for symptoms before and after menstruation when the menstrual pain was the severest and for the VAS measurement of menstrual pain. For the experimental group, the kinesio tape method was conducted two times a week for three weeks (six times in all), and the control group remained intact. The investigations after the experimental treatment were carried out in the same way as before. The measuring instruments were the peri menstrual measuring instruments of symptoms of 42 items and the menstrual pain was measured by VAS Result: The primary hypothesis: The experimental group who used the kinesio tape method would experience less perimenstrual discomfort than the control group who did not use it. The first sub-hypothesis: The first sub-hypothesis that suggests 'The experimental group who used the kinesio tape method would experience more relaxation of perimenstrual symptom than the control group who did not use it' was supported. The second sub-hypothesis: The second sub-hypothesis that suggests that 'The experimental group who used the kinesio tape method would get lower scores of menstrual pain of VAS than the control group who did not use it' was supported. Conclusion: These results of the study show that the kinesio tape method is effective in relaxing perimenstrual symptoms and lessening menstrual pain.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of using external kinesio-tape wrapping for inner arch support on the lower extremity EMG for gait in stiletto heels. Methods: Subjects for this study were two female college students who had been wearing stiletto heels almost every day of the week for more than three years. The independent variable was the presence or absence of kinesio-tape wrap for inner arch support. Dependent variables were EMG readings for the four muscle groups: the medial and lateral gastrocnemius, the tibialis anterior, and the peroneus longus. EMG readings were taken using the NORAXON (USA). The Paired t-test within the subject repeated measure design for the presence and absence of inner arch support (p<0.05) was used via SPSS 18.0. Results: With kinesio-tape wrap for inner arch support, there was a statistically significant decrease in the muscle force mean values for the peroneus longus and the medial and lateral gastrocnemius, in the maximum muscle forces of the peroneus longus and the lateral gastrocnemius. Conclusion: External kinesio-tape wrapping for inner arch support in stiletto heels could have an effect to reduce peroneus longus, and medial/lateral gastrocnemius activities that could result in decreased fatigue and discomfort.
Background: Flat-footed persons with collapsed medial longitudinal arch lose flexibility after skeletal maturity, resulting in several deformities and soft tissue injuries. Although arch support taping is usually applied in the clinic to support the collapsed arch, research on the use of different types of tape for more efficient arch support in flat-footed persons is lacking. Objects: The purpose of this study was to examine three conditions (barefoot, kinesio tape, and dynamic tape) and compare their effects on static and dynamic balance in persons with asymptomatic flexible flatfoot. Methods: Twenty-two subjects (9 females and 13 males) with asymptomatic flexible flatfoot participated in this study. The subjects performed the Y-balance test to measure the composite reach score. The subjects also performed a 30-second standing test to measure the center of pressure (COP) path length and a walking test to measure anteroposterior and lateral variability using the Zebris FDM system. One-way repeated-measures analysis of variance compared the three conditions applied to the subjects' feet for each balance variable. Results: The composite reach score significantly increased following the application of dynamic tape compared with barefoot and that of kinesio tape compared with barefoot. There was no significant difference in the COP path length during standing among the three conditions. Anteroposterior and lateral variability during walking significantly with dynamic tape application compared with barefoot. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that, in persons with asymptomatic flexible flatfoot, application of kinesio tape and dynamic tape may be effective in increasing the composite reach score in Y-balance test, whereas application of dynamic tape may be effective in reducing anteroposterior and lateral variability during walking.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to examine the changes in muscle activity on the anterior deltoid muscle depending on the stretch rate of kinesio tape when applying kinesio tape in healthy adult subjects. Methods: This study was a single-blind randomized controlled trial, including 22 healthy participants (male 15, female 7) with no pathology or past history of shoulder who participated voluntarily. Participants applied a different stretch rate of the kinesio tape, and the functional activity was tested. The stretch rate of kinesio tape was 0%, 10%, and 20%. Subjects lifted a weight (5% of their body weight) to their shoulder height. Subjects lifted a weight up to an angle of 90 degrees in the sagittal plane, and muscle activities (biceps brachii, anterior deltoid, middle deltoid, upper trapezius) were assessed using EMG (electromyography). Analysis of muscle activity was divided into two parts (lift weight and keep holding). The EMG activity of each muscle was normalized to the value of reference voluntary contraction (%RVC) and explored using repeated ANOVA. Results: There were no significant differences in muscle activity depending on the ratio of tape stretch when lifting a weight (p>0.05). There were no significant differences in muscle activity depending on the ratio of tape stretch when holding a weight (p>0.05). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, in the case of applying kinesio taping therapy for healthy people, it was found that the stretch rate of the tape does not have an effect on muscle activity.
Background : The purpose of this study is to identify the level of positive influence on the pain and the gripping power in patients with tennis elbow by comparing the TENS treatment method and the kinesio taping therapy with good accessibility among the kinesio taping therapy and electrical therapy. Methods : Targeting the patients diagnosed with tennis elbow, the subjects were categorized in groups of four, each of electrical therapy group and kinesio tape therapy group where the degree of pain reduction through VAS before and after the treatment of each group and the measurement of the degree of gripping power increase using the gripping power measurement tool as well as the pain reduction changes and gripping power increase before and after the treatment between the two groups were compared. Result : As a result, the electrical therapy group and the kinesio tape group were able to obtain the results of pain reduction and gripping power increase through VAS before and after the treatment, but for all pain reduction and gripping power increase, it had no statistically significant changes(p>.05). In addition, in the changes of pain reduction and changes of gripping power increase before and after the treatment, there were no statistically significant differences between the electrical therapy group and the kinesio tape group(p>.05). Conclusion : Based on the results so far, it is thought that the kinesio taping therapy can positively influence the pain reduction of patients with tennis elbow and increase of gripping power.
Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of plantar flexor on muscle fatigue and endurance when two different sport tapes are applied. Design: Cross-sectional design. Methods: Fifty-one healthy adults were randomly assigned to dynamic taping group (n=17), kinesio taping group (n=17), and control group (n=17). The dynamic taping group used the dynamic tape. The kinesio tape group used the kinesio tape, and the control group doesn't used tape. Every group performed heel rise test and sEMG for every during pre-test and post-test. To evaluate plantar flexor endurance, the number of times was measured during the heel rise test. Results: The number of heel rises increased significantly in the post-test in dynamic taping group compared to the pre-test, and In comparison between groups, the number of heel rises significantly increased in dynamic taping group compared to kinesio taping group and control group. PEF value was significantly increased in the post-test compared to the pre-test in dynamic taping group, and there was a significant difference between the three groups according to the taping application. Conclusion: The results of this study confirmed that dynamic taping was effective in musclular fatigue and endurance on plantar flexor in healthy adults. Based on these results, it is suggested that the application of dynamic tape can be suggested as one of the intervention methods for muscle endurance and muscle fatigue.
PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of the low dye taping technique on the static and dynamic balancing ability and navicular bone drop when the low dye taping technique was divided into elastic and non-elastic taping. METHODS: The subjects of the study were 31 volunteers without musculoskeletal disorders. The length (L) and anterior (A), posteromedial, and posterolateral values of the arch in the NO (normal eyes open), NC (normal eyes closed), PO (pillow with eyes open), and PC (pillow with close eyes closed) states were evaluated when barefoot and when Kinesio tape and non-elastic tape were applied. The measurements were analyzed using repeated ANOVA and an independent t-test. Post hoc tests were performed using a Fisher's LSD. RESULTS: A significant difference was found in the arch L and A values using a foot scanner (p < .05). In addition, there was a significant difference in dynamic balance in the three directions (p < .05), and no difference was found in the case of static balance. As a result, non-elastic tape application helps improve the dynamic balance ability and arch of the foot. CONCLUSION: The non-elastic tape technique is helpful for the foot arch function, and there is no difference in the static balance ability between Kinesio tape and non-elastic tape. Nevertheless, non-elastic tape is more helpful for the dynamic balance ability than Kinesio taping.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of a kinesio tape on inspiratory muscle training(IMT) to improve muscle strength, endurance and pulmonary function. Methods: Healthy 20 males were divided into IMT group (control group) and IMT with tape group (experimental group). The same IMT program was applied to both groups using the Respifit S for four weeks, three times a week, a total 12 times. To exprimental group, kinesio tape was applied on the inspiratory agonist diaphragm and the accessory inspiratory muscle scalene, sternocleidomastoid, pectoralis minor. The inspiratory pulmonary muscle strength was measured by the maximal inspiratory pressure (PI max) and minute volume (MV) using the Respifit S and the pulmonary function were measured peak expiratory flow (PEF), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1sec (FEV1), FEV1/FVC using the Spirometer and compared before and after. Results: Results showed that the PI max in the two groups increased significantly and experimental group increased more effectively than that of control group. However, only MV showed a significant increase in experimental group but was not significantly different between the two groups. PEF and FEV1/FVC are significantly increased in both groups, but they did not make much difference between two groups, and the FVC for the two groups did not increase significantly. FEV1 increased significantly only with control group, but did not make a difference with experimental group. Conclusion: These result show that the PI max value for experimental group increased significantly than that of control group. Therefore kinesio tape maximizes inspiratory muscle exercise effect on muscle strength improvement. However, because of the short experimental period and difficulty in subject control, increase values of the others did not show a significant difference. In other words, kinesio tape did not show maximizing the inspiratory muscle exercise effect to improve endurance and pulmonary function.
Background: This study investigated the effect of erector spinae and quadratus lumbar kinesio taping and support surface conditions on abdominal muscle activity during plank exercise. Design: Within-Group design. Methods: A total of twenty-three healthy men and women participated in this study. Abdominal muscle (both external obliques and internal oblique muscle) contraction was analyzed through EMG measurement with the presence or absence of kinesio taping applied to the erector spinae muscle and quadratus lumborum muscle during plank exercise and the difference between the support surfaces (stable surface and unstable surface) as variables. Abdominal EMG was attached to the right external oblique, left external oblique, right internal oblique, and left internal oblique. Results: The results showed that Abdominal left and right external obliques and internal obliques showed significant increases in activity when kinesio taping was applied to the erector spinae and quadratus lumborum muscles and unstable ground (p<0.05). Conclusion: In this study, we confirmed that the activity of the abdominal muscles was significantly increased during the plank operation in the state where the kinesio tape was attached. In addition, it was confirmed that the activity of the abdominal muscles was significantly increased during the plank operation on the unstable surface. These results suggest that in the state of kinesio tape attached and instability, plank motion has a positive effect on abdominal muscle activity.
