야생 멧돼지에서 돼지신충(swine kidney worm) 감염 예 (A case report of swine kidney worm infection in a wild feral pig)

  • This is the first case report of Stephanurus dentatus infection of a feral pig in Korea. In late April, 2000, a weakened feral pig was caught by blow gun from a very low level mountain near the Gyeongsang National University. We autopsied the feral pig in the laboratory of veterinary anatomy at the College of Veterinary Medicine. A total of 27 adult parasites, 11 females and 16 males, and numerous eggs were observed from the cysts formed in the perirenal tissues and ureters. The average size of males was $25.1{\pm}3.2mm$ long and of the females was $34.2{\pm}2.9mm$. The worms were stout, the females being about 2mm broad, and the internal organs were partly visible through the cuticle. The shape of thin-shelled eggs found in the cysts of perirenal tissues and ureter was ellisoidal and oval, and measured $40{\sim}65{\times}90{\sim}115{\mu}m$. The adult parasites were found in cysts which varied from 0.6 to 4cm in diameter, each cyst usually containing a pair of adult worms embedded in green pus. The ureter was thickened and almost occluded, with consequent hydronephrosis.

  • Objective : To find the main symptoms associated with atopic dermatitis and to get the utmost out of information about cause, treatment are contribute in the treatment of atopic dermatitis rather than looking for ways through how to connect modern atopic dermatitis and a listed symptom of classic literature. Method : In this research, we recorded about the main symptoms of atopic dermatitis such as itch, erythema, edema, pus and furuncle. Also we interpreted original text by extracting a sentence containing the terms like red[赤], pus[膿], flare[發赤], dermatosis[溞], swelling[洋], light red[紅], itch[瀁], worm running[蟲行], juice[汁], rash[癮疹], variegation[疹斑] and summarized cause of symptoms, disease sign, prescription. Results : There are the cause of many symptoms accompanied by atopic dermatitis in the body that recorded unpreparedness[虛], Wind[風], Fever[熱], unpreparedness & interruption of vitality hole[氣穴不通], unpreparedness & Wind, Wind Fever[風熱], Wind Coldness[風寒], Wind Humidity[風濕], Humidity Fever[濕熱], Wind Humidity Fever, Wind of Lungs[肺風], Wind of Lungs and Spleen[脾肺風], the Kidney Wind poison[腎臟風毒], Wind of Lungs Fever, Worm[蟲], miscellaneous vitality[雜氣], unpreparedness and Fever of Heart[心虛熱], old sore of kidney poison[久瘡腎臟風毒].

Authentication and quality control of Cordyceps sinensis, a traditional Chinese medicine known as winter-worm summer-grass

  • Cordyceps, one of the most valued traditional Chinese medicines, consists of the dried fungus Cordyceps sinensis growing on the larva of caterpillar. It is also known as 'winter-worm and summer-grass' because of its appearance during different seasons. The parasitic complex of the fungus and the caterpillar is found in soil of a prairie at an elevation of 3,500 to 5,000 meters in northwestern part of China. According to Chinese medicinal theory, Cordyceps is used to replenish the kidney and soothe the lung, and indeed many clinical applications have been reported. The natural Cordyceps is rare and expensive on the local market, and therefore, several mycelial strains have been isolated from natural Cordyceps and manufactured in large quantities by fermentation technology, and they are commonly sold as health food products in Orient. The adulterants of Cordyceps are commonly found on the market, and therefore the authentication of these products has to be defined. Having the urgent need from current market, different chemical markers such as nucleoside, ergosterol, mannitol and polysaccharide are being used for quality control of Cordyceps. Unfortunately, these markers are far from optimization, and therefore extensive works are needed to define the pharmacological efficiency of these markers.

BLOOD CHEMICAL ALTERATIONS IN EXPERIMENTAL Setaria cervi INFECTION IN RABBITS

  • Adult male and female Setaria cervi worms were implanted in the peritoneal cavity of rabbits to develop microfilaraemia. These infected rabbits revealed non-significant rise in total protein, significant reduction in albumin content and albumin-globulin ratio and significant increase in globulin and total bilirubin. The levels of total cholesterol, blood urea nitrogen and urea in blood were elevated from day 20 to 40, 25 to 70 and 30 to 70 respectively whereas, uric acid remained high from day 25 to 50 and creatinine from 15th day to 50th day of worm implantation. Biochemical changes suggested the involvement of liver and kidney in the infected rabbits.

  • The surface ultrastructure of Acanthotrema felis (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) adults, recovered from a kitten experimentally infected with the metacercariae, was observed using a scanning electron microscope. The worm was leaf-like, ventrally concave and covered with scale-like multi-pointed tegumental spines. The spines on the anterior surface were short but broad, and had 10-12 pointed tips. The cytoplasmic processes protruded around the spines, like pockets for the spines. The ventrogenital opening was crescent, or kidney-shaped, and had protuberances with minute spines on its surrounding tegument. The spines on the posterior surface were long, but narrow, with 6-8 pointed tips. The cytoplasmic processes on this tegument were ridge-like, and elevated along the row of the spines. The surface ultrastructure of A. felis is generally similar to that of other heterophyid flukes, but some features are characteristic, and may be of taxonomic and bio-ecological significance.

  • As a herbal supplement, Dioscorea batatas Decne (DBD) presents potent antioxidant activity and diverse health benefits. In the present study, functions of a 30 kDa glycoprotein isolated from DBD (hereafter, DBD glycoprotein) in the regulation of feed efficiency and fecal malodor in mice were explored. DBD glycoprotein produced protective effect against cytotoxicity induced by the ecotoxicological endocrine-disrupting substance bisphenol A in gastrointestinal epithelial HT-29 cells. To investigate its potential roles in the regulation of feed efficiency and fecal malodor, mice were administered an oral injection of DBD glycoprotein for 2 weeks. Compared with the control values, the weight of internal organs (liver, heart, kidney, and spleen) and levels of glutamate pyruvate transaminase, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, and lactic dehydrogenase were not significantly changed during DBD glycoprotein administration for 2 weeks. Interestingly, DBD glycoprotein improved feed efficiency and reduced hydrogen sulfide concentration without altering the ammonia level in mouse feces. Collectively, these results indicate that DBD glycoprotein is a functional agent that exerts gastrointestinal protective effects against ecotoxicological substances, improves feed efficiency, and reduces fecal malodor.

Chemical Composition of Main Cordyceps species in Korea

  • The caterpillar-shaped Chinese medicinal mushroom (DongChongXiaCao) looks like a worm in the winter and like a grass in the summer. The fruiting body has been regarded as popular folk or effective medicines used to treat human diseases such as asthma, bronchial and lung inflammation, and kidney disease. The fruiting bodies of Cordyceps militaris, C. pruinosa and Paecilomyces tenuipes that formed on the living silkworm (Bombyx mori) host were used in this examination. This study was carried out to investigate the soluble sugar, amino acid and fatty acid profiles in the fruiting-bodies. Soluble sugars such as glycerol, glucose, mannitol and sucrose were mainly found in the fruiting bodies of C. militaris, C. pruinosa and P. tenuipes. Total soluble sugar content was 29.23 mg/g in C. militaris, 8.61 mg/g in C. pruinosa and 24.00 mg/g 1in P. tenuipes on dry weight basis. Total free amino acid content was 14.09 mg/g 1in C. militaris, 34.60 mg/g in C. pruinosa and 17.09 mg/g in P. tenuipes. The content of oleic acid in fatty acids was above high more than 30% regardless of species.

동의보감(東醫寶鑑)중 망면색(望面色)에 대한 연구(硏究) (A study on the diagnosis of observing face color by Dongeuibogam)

  • Objectives A study on the importance of observing face color in the Dongeuibogam and the other things to know when we observe face color. Methods We used Deyuk Dongeuibogam of Dongeuibogam publishing company from original photographic edition. Results (1) In all section(ex. Naekyungpyeon, Oehyeongpyeon and Japbyoungpyeon), the chapters related with observing face color were fifty-one. In Naekyungpyeon, the chapters related with observing face color were nineteen(37%). In Oehyeongpyeon, the chapters related with observing face color were ten(20%). In Japbyoungpyeon, the chapters related with observing face color were twenty-two(43%). In all section(ex. Naekyungpyeon, Oehyeongpyeon and Japbyoungpyeon), the statements related with observing face color were three-hundred and nine. In Naekyungpyeon, the statements related with observing face color were sixty-four(21%). In Oehyeongpyeon, the statements related with observing face color were fifty-two(17%). In Japbyoungpyeon, the statements related with observing face color were one hundred ninety-three(62%). (2) In each chapter, the number of statement related with observing face color was studied. Pediatric Chapter (75) were the most common, followed by The way of finding the cause of a disease (27) Face (26) Cold (24) Weak&Fatigue (12) Phlegm, Jaundice (8) Nose, Worm, Chronic indigestion (7) Mouth&Tongue, Woman, Stool (6) Bodyshape, Liver, Heart, Kidney, Cough (5) Eye, Carbunculosis (4) Blood, Voice, Spleen, Lung, Chest, Fire, Edema, Detoxification (3) in order. (3) In each section(ex. Naekyungpyeon, Oehyeongpyeon and Japbyoungpyeon), the rate of chapter related with observing face color was studied. Naekyungpyeon(73%) was the highest. Japbyoungpyeon(61%). Oehyeongpyeon(38%) was the lowest. Conclusions The importance of each chapter for observing face color in the Dongeuibogam was studied. In addition, the entire ocular inspection, the part ocular inspection, moisture and the difference of skin according to the personal constitution should be considered. There are not only the important parts of the past that does not mean but also the unimportant parts of the past that are meaningful now. Additional studies will be needed for the latter.

The fruiting bodies of Paecilomyces tenuipes that formed on the living silkworm (Bombyx mon) host were used in this examination. This study was carried out to investigate the proximate composition, soluble sugar, amino acid and fatty acid profiles, and contents of the bioactive ingredient including adenosine and D-mannitol in the fruiting-bodies. The moisture content was 57.56%. Soluble sugars found were glycerol, glucose, mannitol and sucrose, and the contents exceeded $24\;mgg^{-1}dry$ weight. Total free amino acid content was $17.09\;mgg^{-1}dry$ weight. Arginine, glycine, proline and tyrosine were main amino acids. The content of oleic acid in fatty acids was high. Adenosine was more abundant in fruiting bodies than corpus.

토용분(土龍粉) 첨가급식(添加給食)이 흰쥐의 성장(成長) 및 혈액성분(血液成分)에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Earthworm Flour Supplemented Diet on Growth and Blood Components of Rats)

  • 토용분(士龍粉)의 영양효과(營養效果)를 알아보고자 평군 체중 (male)72.3${\pm}$1.7g, (female)71.8${\pm}$1.4g인 흰쥐를 암수 구별하여 대조군(對照群), 2% 토용분(土龍粉)을 3일(日)마다 첨가급식군(添加給食群), 2% 토용분(土龍粉)을 매일첨가급식군(每日添加給食群)으로 나누어 6주간(週間) 사육하면서 사료섭취량, 체중증가(體重增加), 식이효율(食餌效率), 단백질효율(蛋白質效率), 장기중량(臟器重量) 등과 혈액중(血液中)의 hematocrit, hemoglobin, total protein, albumin, A/G ratio, glucose, total cholesterol 함량(含量)등의 변화를 관찰(觀察)하여 다음과 같은 결과(結果)를 얻었다. 1. 사료섭취량은 암쥐의 매일토용분(每日土龍粉) 첨가급식군(添加給食群)이 대조군(對照群)에 비해 높은(p<0.05) 경향을 보였다. 2. 체중증가량(體重培加量)은 숫쥐의 매일토용분(每日土龍粉) 첨가급식군(添加給貪群)이 대조군(對照群)에 비해 높았다(p<0.05). 3. 식이효율(食餌效率), 단백질효율(蛋白質效率)은 암수 모두 2% 토용분(土龍粉) 첨가급식(添加絡食)으로는 큰 영향을 미치지 않았다. 4. 숫쥐에서 매일토용분첨가급식군(每日土龍粉添加緖食群)의 심장(心臟)과 폐(肺)의 중량(重量)이 대조군(對照群)에 비해 높은(p<0.05) 경향을 보였으나 간(肝), 신장(腎臟), 비장(脚臟)은 대조군(對照群)과 비슷한 경향이었다. 5. Hematocrit 치(値)는 암쥐에서 실험군(實驗群)들이 대조군(對照群)에 비해 높은 (p<0.05) 경향을 보였고, 숫쥐에서는 대조군(對照群)과 비슷한 경향이었다. 6. 혈액중(血液中) hemoglobin과 혈청중(血淸中) total protein, albumin, A/G ratio, total cholesterol, glucose 등은 대조군(對照群)과 실험군(實驗群)들이 비슷한 함량을 보였다.
