A Strategy for Productive Teachers' Questioning in Chemistry Class: Disassembly, Assembly and Interweave of Questions

  • Questioning forms an integral part of most strategies for effective teaching when the class consists of difficult content. Science including chemistry is usually content-rich, but difficult to understand without supporting lab experiments, subsidiary visual materials and model kits. Engaging the attention and interest of students in such a subject, therefore, is the key to the success of a daily lesson in the classroom. However, generating meaningful questions requires a certain level of information and metacognitive skills on the part of the teacher. The purpose of this study was to find out the framework of effective teachers' questioning with a large group in chemistry class: how teachers used questioning to engage their students in such a big class, to identify a variety of forms of feedback provided by students and to develop a model of question-inducing strategies. We investigated the teachers' recognition of their questioning and the students' recognition of teachers' questioning by surveying over 82 teachers and 434 students in Korea. The survey findings show that the questionnaire can be categorized into four elements: the theme of the teachers' questions (T), students' inquiries (I), methods of teachers' questioning (M) and encouragement of students (E). These elements can be analyzed and sub-categorized to find out which elements are effective in good questioning, even though the elements are interwoven tetrahedrally.

공과대학 학생들이 갖추어야 할 실행능력에 대한 공학 교수자들의 인식 및 교수활동 실태 (Engineering Professors' Perceptions on the Key Competencies of Engineering Students and Their Instructional Practice)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate engineering professors' perceptions on the key competencies for engineering students (i.e. creativity, problem solving, designing, field application, etc.) and their instructional efforts to promote the competencies. The guiding research questions included 1) to what extent engineering professors perceived the key competencies as the important qualification that engineering students should obtain in college, 2) to what extent the professors put in a great deal of effort to promote such competencies in their teaching, and 3) how their perceptions on the key competencies correlated with their instructional practice. Two hundred fifteen engineering professors affiliated to diverse fields voluntarily participated in the study and filled out 5 point-Likert scale survey items. In results, despite of some range of variation on their perceptions according to the fields, most of the engineering professors highly valued the four key competencies. However, compared to the perceptions, engineering professors in some engineering fields relatively less focused on promoting the competencies in their teaching practice.

한국 유아원 아동 어머니의 놀이와 일의 개념-질적인 접근 (Conceptions of Play and Work Held by Mothers of Preschool Children in Korea)

  • Although play is a key element in child development, little research has been done on how play is conceptualized by adults directly involved with children on a daily basis. The purpose of the study was to determine meanings of the concept "play" held by mothers of preschool children in Korea. Specifically, the study sought to determine Korean mothers' conceptions of the nature and functions of play, and their conceptions of play in contrast to work. An open-ended/semi-structured interview instrument was constructed to generate research data. Interview questions focused on three content categories: (1) the nature of play, (2) the functions of play, and (3) conceptions of work. Questions in each content category consisted of four distinct types: (1) experience/behavioral, (2) opinion/value, (3) feeling, and (4) knowledge. The instrument was pilot-tested with two subjects, revised, and administered to eleven mothers of preschool children. Interview data were subjected to domain and taxonomic analyses. Analyses yielded two principal themes: (1) Play is viewed as an intrinsically motivated and pleasurable activity; (2) while play and work could be consonant, the values inherent in play and work are generally in opposition.

환경교육 교재가 갖추어야 할 137가지 조건 (6 Key Characteristics for Excellent Environmental Education Materials)

  • This study was designed to find answers for the two questions that had been raised in the study of Lee and Fortner(2000): 1) How can the appropriateness of classification of environmental issues by perceived certainty and tangibility be improved? and 2) How are perceived certainty, tangibility, significance of environmental issues and willingness to act to solve those problems related to each other? A questionnaire consisted of 40 questions was administered to 144 college students. Results of the study revealed that classification through cluster analysis appeared to be more appropriate and credible than classification by mean scores or medians. Four major factors were found to have high positive correlations to each other as hypothesized. These results imply for environmental educators that people's attitude toward and behavior on environmental problems are likely to be more strongly and meaningfully associated with their perceptions of those problems that are subjective and flexible than physical or chemical characteristics of the problems that are frequently considered as objective.

The Relationship Between Accounting Information Systems and Firms Performance: Empirical Evidence from Saudi Arabia

  • This study attempts to understand the relationship between accounting information systems AIS and firms' performance; in the first part of the study, a brief introduction that focuses on the technological advancements and the impact of such advancements on the business world, and in the second part, a review of literature that considered different perspectives on the relationship between AIS and firms' performance. The key differences between manual and automated systems were shown in a table later in the literature review, followed by explanations for each comparison aspect. In the third part, four questions are asked regarding the AIS implementation; the questions covered the top management commitment, the users' competencies, the quality of the adopted system, and the impact of the degree of technological investment on the implementation process. Data for the study was acquired from a Saudi SME. The study's purpose is to investigate the impact of AIS on organizational performance in Saudi SMEs. The presented ideas of this study, where the main finding of the study is that AIS implementation has a positive impact on firms' performance.

중등 예비 과학교사들의 지구과학영역 탐구문제 개발 능력 분석 (Exploring Preservice Secondary Science Teachers' Abilities of Developing Inquiry Questions in the Content of Earth Science)

  • 과학교육의 목적은 과학적 소양의 함양이며 이를 달성하기 위해서는 학교현장에서는 과학탐구의 실행을 중요한 목표로 삼고 있다. 이때 과학탐구의 단계는 문제제기, 가설설정, 자료수집 및 변환, 자료해석 및 결론도출로 이루어져 있다. 하지만 학교에서 학생들의 과학탐구단계는 자료수집 및 변환에 해당하는 단계에 치중되어 있으며, 문제제기는 나머지 단계를 결정하는 가장 중요한 시작의 단계임에도 불구하고 학교현장에서는 학생들에게 문제제기 기회가 거의 주어지지 않고 있다. 이 연구에서는 지구과학을 가르치는 예비교사들의 탐구문제 개발 능력 실태를 파악하고, 연구팀에서 개발한 과학탐구 문제 개발 가이드(IQDG)를 경험 후에는 탐구문제 개발 능력이 향상되었는지, 그리고 이러한 탐구문제개발 능력은 탐구설계 능력과는 어떤 관계가 있는지를 알아보았다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 지구과학 예비교사들에 의해 제안된 탐구문제의 수준과 정교성은 IQDG를 통해서 향상되었다. 둘째, 가장 높은 빈도수를 보인 탐구문제의 유형은 실험상황에서 나타난 결과들 사이에 무슨 관계가 있는지를 파악하는 '관계-탐구문제'와, 두 번째의 빈도수를 보인 유형은 결과에 대해서 원인을 찾는 '왜-어떻게 탐구문제'인 것으로 파악되었다. 마지막으로, 수준 및 정교성이 높은 탐구문제는 역시 높은 수준의 탐구설계 능력을 보여줌에 따라 탐구문제 개발 능력은 곧 전체적인 탐구과정의 성공에 영향을 미치는 중요한 요소임을 결론 내릴 수 있다.

조경기사 필기시험 중 조경시공구조 및 관리학 분야의 출제경향 분석 (An Analysis of Test Trends for Landscape Structure Construction and Management in Engineer Landscape Architecture Examination)

  • 본 연구는 2007년부터 2016년까지 최근 10년 동안 조경기사 필기시험 응시자 및 합격자 현황, 조경시공구조 및 조경관리학 출제유형별 빈도와 추이, 유형별 출제경향과 특성을 분석하여 조경기사 필기시험 중 조경시공구조 및 조경관리학 분야의 출제경향을 파악하고자 하였으며, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 2007년부터 2016년까지 최근 10년 동안 조경기사 필기시험 응시자 및 합격자 현황을 분석해 본 결과, 응시자는 2011년부터, 합격자는 2012년부터 줄어들고 있으며, 최근 10년 동안 조경기사 필기시험의 평균 합격률은 11.2%를 나타냈다. 조경시공구조학 기출문제에 출제된 유형별 빈도와 추이, 출제경향과 특성을 분석해 본 결과, 시공계획 및 공정관리, 조경재료, 조경식재기반, 공종별 공사, 조경적산, 기본구조역학, 측량 등 7개 항목의 키워드 중 공종별 공사를 묻는 문항이 25.2%로 가장 많았으나, 조경식재기반시설에 대한 문제는 3.3%를 차지, 타 항목보다 출제빈도가 낮아 중요성에 비해 출제빈도가 낮은 것으로 파악되었다. 조경관리론 기출문제에 출제된 유형별 빈도와 추이, 출제경향과 특성을 분석해 본 결과, 운영 및 이용 유지관리, 전정관리, 시비관리, 잡초관리, 관수 및 배수관리, 월동관리, 병해충관리, 잔디관리, 조경시설관리 등 9개 항목의 키워드 중 운영 및 이용 유지관리를 묻는 문항이 37.2%로 가장 많았으며, 시비관리와 관수 및 배수관리는 2011년부터 조경시설관리 중 수경시설관리는 2015년부터 증가 추세에 있는 것으로 파악되었다. 이상에서 조경시공구조 및 조경관리론의 출제 경향을 살펴본 결과, 광범위하고 다양한 항목들이 출제되고 있으며, 조경시공구조에서는 합리적인 가격과 우수한 품질을 확보하기 위해 공종별 공사, 조경재료, 조경적산분야, 조경관리학에서는 기후변화 등의 환경적 요인들로 인하여 시비관리, 관수 및 배수, 조경시설관리 중 수경시설관리 등에서 출제빈도가 높아지고 있는 실정이다.

A Study on Application of Web 3.0 Technologies in Small and Medium Enterprises of India

  • The purpose of this study is to explore how small and medium enterprises in India has identified the opportunities and challenges in adopting the Web 3.0 technologies to improve their productivity and efficiency. After an in-depth literature review, researchers framed a semi-structured questionnaire with open-ended questions for collecting responses from managers working in 40 Indian SME's representing five key economic sectors. The collected data was analyzed, and themes were encoded using the NVivo 11 computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software. Content analysis was used to analyze the data collected with the semi-structured interviews. This study identified five key themes and 12 subthemes illustrating the key advantages and challenges as perceived by the managerial leadership of SMEs. The five key themes identified in this study include integration of data and services, the creation of new functionalities, privacy and security, financial and technological challenges, and organizational challenges. The results of this study will benefit the organizational leadership of SMEs in planning and developing their short-term and long-term information systems strategies and will enable SME leaders to make optimal use of their information technology assets, improving the productivity and competitiveness of the firms. Web 3.0 technologies are considered as emerging technologies, so the advantages and challenges of using these technologies for SMEs have not been explored in the context of emerging economies, such as India.

A Dynamic Defense Using Client Puzzle for Identity-Forgery Attack on the South-Bound of Software Defined Networks

  • Software Defined Network (SDN) realizes management and control over the underlying forwarding device, along with acquisition and analysis of network topology and flow characters through south bridge protocol. Data path Identification (DPID) is the unique identity for managing the underlying device, so forged DPID can be used to attack the link of underlying forwarding devices, as well as carry out DoS over the upper-level controller. This paper proposes a dynamic defense method based on Client-Puzzle model, in which the controller achieves dynamic management over requests from forwarding devices through generating questions with multi-level difficulty. This method can rapidly reduce network load, and at the same time separate attack flow from legal flow, enabling the controller to provide continuous service for legal visit. We conduct experiments on open-source SDN controllers like Fluid and Ryu, the result of which verifies feasibility of this defense method. The experimental result also shows that when cost of controller and forwarding device increases by about 2%-5%, the cost of attacker's CPU increases by near 90%, which greatly raises the attack difficulty for attackers.

The Key role of the Bulge Compactness in Star-forming Activity in Late-type Galaxies

  • Which mechanism governs star-formation activity in galaxies is still one of the most important, open questions in galactic astronomy. To address this issue, we investigate the specific star formation rate (sSFR) of late-type galaxies as functions of various structural parameters including the morphology, mass, radius, and mass compactness (MC). We use a sample of ~200,000 late-type galaxies with z = 0.02 ~ 0.2 from SDSS DR7 and a catalog of bulge-disk decomposition (Simard et al. 2011; Mendel et al. 2013). We find a remarkably strong correlation between bulge's MC and galaxy's sSFR, in the sense that galaxies with more compact bulge tend to be of lower sSFR. This seems counter-intuitive given that galactic sSFR is driven predominantly by disks rather than bulges and suggests that the central mass density plays a key role in recent star-forming activity. We discuss the physical cause of the new findings in terms of the bulge growth history and AGN activities.
