  • A solid-state reaction of $MoO_3$ with as-synthesized H-SAPO-34 generated paramagnetic Mo(V) species. The dehydration resulted in weak Mo(V) species, and subsequent activation resulted in the formation of Mo(V) species such as $Mo(V)_{5c}$ and $Mo(V)_{6c}$ that are characterized by ESR. The data of ESR and ESEM show the oxomolybdenum species, to be $(MoO_2)^+$ or $(MoO)^{3+}$. The $(MoO_2)^+$ species seems to be more probable. Since H-SAPO-34 has a low framework negative charge, $(MoO)^{3+}$ with a high positive charge can not be easily stabilized. A solution reaction between the solution of silico-molybdic acid and calcined H-SAPO-34 resulted in only $(MoO_2)^+$ species. A rhombic ESR signal is observed on adsorption of $D_2O$, $CD_3OH$, $CH_3Ch_2OD$ and $ND_3$. The Location and coordination structure of Mo(V) species has been determined by three-pulse electron spin-echo modulation data and their simulations. After the adsorption of methanol, ethylene, ammonia, and water for MoH-SAPO-34, three molecules, one molecule, one and one molecule, respectively, are directly coordinated to $(MoO_2)^+)$.

  • In this study, the diffusion barrier properties of $1000 \AA$ thick molybdenum compounds (Mo, Mo-N, $MoSi_2$, Mo-Si-N) were investigated using sheet resistance measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS). Each barrier material was deposited by the dc magnetron sputtering, and annealed at 300-$800^{\circ}C$ for 30min in vacuum. Mo and $MoSi_2$ barrier were failed at low temperature due to Cu diffusion through grain bound-aries and defects of Mo thin film and the reaction of Cu with Si within $MoSi_2$ respectively. A failure temperature could be raised to $650^{\circ}C$-30min in the Mo barrier system and to $700^{\circ}C$-30min in the Mo-silicide system by replacing Mo and $MoSi_2$ with Mo-N and Mo-Si-N, respectively. The crystallization temperature in the Mo-silicide film was raised by the addition of $N_2$. It is considered that not only the N, stuffing effect but also the variation of crystallization temperature affects the reaction of Cu with Si within Mo-silicide. It was found that Mo-Si-N is more effective barrier than Mo, $MoSi_2$, or Mo-N to copper penetration preventing Cu reaction with the substrate for 30min at a temperature higher than $650^{\circ}C$.

  • A nano-$MoS_2$/montmorillonite K-10 (K10) composite was prepared and characterized. The composite contains two types of 2H-$MoS_2$ nanoparticles. One is the hollow spherical $MoS_2$ with a size range of 75 nm, and the other is the spherical nano cluster of $MoS_2$ with a size range of 30 nm. The two kinds of nano-$MoS_2$ were formed via assembly of numerous $MoS_2$ nano-platelets with a size of ~10 nm. A tribological comparison was then made among nano-$MoS_2$/K10, K10, nano-$MoS_2$ and a mechanical mixture of K10 and nano-$MoS_2$. K10 reduced the wear but slightly increased the friction. Nano-$MoS_2$ remarkably reduced both friction and wear. The mechanical mixture demonstrated better wear resistance than nano-$MoS_2$, indicating a synergistic anti-wear effect of nano-$MoS_2$ and K10. The synergistic effect was reinforced using nano-$MoS_2$/K10 instead of the mechanical mixture. A part of the $MoS_2$ in the contact region always lubricated the friction pair, and the rest formed a tribofilm. K10 segregated the friction pair to alleviate the ablation wear but magnified the abrasive wear. S-$MoS_2$ protects K10 and they together function as both a lubricant and an isolating agent to reduce the ablation and abrasive wear.

  • Tridentate Schiff base molybdenum(V) complexes such as [Mo(Ⅴ)2O(SOHB)4], [Mo(Ⅴ)2O3(SOIP)2(NCS)2] and [Mo(Ⅴ)2O3(SOTB)2(H20)2](SOHB: Salicylidene-o-imino hydroxybenzene, SOIP; Salicylidene-o-imino pyridine, SOTB; Salicylidene-o-imino thiolbenzene) were synthesized and identified by elemental analysis, spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was found that the mole ratio of Schiff base ligand to the metal in these complexes is 1 : 1 or 1 : 2. The redox processes of the complexes were investigated by cyclic voltammetric and differential pulse polarographic techniques in nonaquous solvent containing 0.1 M tetraethylammonium perchlorate (TEAP) as supporting electrolyte at glassy carbon electrode. It was found that diffusion controlled reduction processes with one electron were Mo(Ⅴ)Mo(Ⅴ)e-→ Mo(Ⅴ)Mo(Ⅳ)e-→Mo(Ⅳ)Mo(Ⅳ)e-→Mo(Ⅳ)Mo(Ⅲ).

  • Ternary Mo-Cu-N films were deposited on Si wafer substrates with various copper contents by magnetron sputtering method using Mo target and Cu target in $Ar/N_2$ gaseous atmosphere. As increasing $N_2$ pressure, the microstructure of Mo-N films changed from ${\gamma}-Mo_2N$ of (111) having face-centered-cubic (FCC) structure to $\delta$-MoN of (200) having hexagonal structure. Detailed the microstructures of the Mo-Cu-N coatings were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and field emission transmission electron microscope. The results indicated that the incorporation of copper into the growing Mo-N coating led to the $Mo_2N$ and MoN crystallites were more well-distributed and refined and the copper existed in grain boundary. Ternary Mo-Cu-N films had a composite microstructure of the nanosized crystal crystalline ${\gamma}-Mo_2N$ and $\delta$-MoN surrounded by amorphous $Cu_3N$ phase.

  • M/BM -series catalysts, $MoO_3$ supported on ${\alpha}-Bi_2Mo_3O_{12}$ were also prepared by impregnation method. BM/M-series catalysts, ${\alpha}-Bi_2Mo_3O_{12}$ supported on $MoO_3$ were also prepared by coprecipitation. Structure and catalytic properties of the two phase catalysts were studied by means of using nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The reaction test for the selective oxidation of propylene to acrolein over Bi-molybdate catalysts was studied using a fixed-bed reactor system. In M/BM-series catalysts, $MoO_3$ was dispersed on ${\alpha}-Bi_2Mo_3O_{12}$, and the crystal structure of ${\alpha}-Bi_2Mo_3O_{12}$ remains unchanged by the presence of excess $MoO_3$. However the surface morphology and bulk structure of BM/M-series catalysts were altered probably because the precipitated $Bi(OH)_3$ reacted with $MoO_3$ during the calcination to form ${\alpha}-Bi_2Mo_3O_{12}$ phase. The results of propylene oxidation on both series catalysts showed that the reaction took place over the surface of ${\alpha}-Bi_2Mo_3O_{12}$ particle and the role of excess $MoO_3$ was to supply oxygen to ${\alpha}-Bi_2Mo_3O_{12}$. These increasing effects on activity were also observed in the mechanical mixtures of ${\alpha}-Bi_2Mo_3O_{12}$ and $MoO_3$.

  • This paper describes a formation of the Mo-silicide on Mo tip to compare the emission characteristics of the Mo tip. Cone-shaped Mo tip arrays were fabricated and silicidized by evaporating a 15nm-thick a-Si film on Mo tip arrays and annealing it in inert ambient at the temperature of $1000\;^{\circ}C$ for 60 sec. The $Mo_5Si_3$ phase of Mo-silicide was observed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Although the gate voltage of the Mo-silicide tip increased by 38 V to obtain the current level of 20 nA/tip, the dependence of emission current on vacuum level was improved.

  • In this study, ternary Ti-Mo-N and new quaternary Ti-Mo-Si-N coatings were synthesized on steel substrates(AISI D2) and Si wafers by a hybrid coating system of arc ion plating (AIP) using Ti target and d.c. magnetron sputtering technique using Mo and Si targets in $N_2/Ar$ gaseous mixture. Ternary Ti-Mo-N coatings were substitutional solid-solution of (Ti, Mo)N and showed maximum hardness of approximately 30 GPa at the Mo content of ${\sim}10$. %. The Ti-Mo-Si-N coating with the Si content of 8.8 at. % was a composite consisting of fine (Ti, Mo)N crystallites and amorphous $Si_3N_4$ phase. The hardness of the Ti-Mo-Si(8.8 at. %)-N coatings exhibited largely increased hardness value of ${\sim}48$ GPa due to the microstructural evolution to the fine composite microstructure and the refinement of (Ti, Mo)N crystallites. The average friction coefficient of the Ti-Mo-Si-N coatings largely decreased with increase of Si content. The microstructures of Ti-Mo-Si-N coatings were investigated with instrumental analyses of XRD, XPS, and HRTEM in this work.

  • The gas sensing characteristic of $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres were investigated. $MoO_3$-carbon composite spheres were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis of aqueous droplets containing Mo-source and sucrose in nitrogen, which were converted into $MoO_3$ yolk-shell spheres by heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ in air. Subsequently, $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres were prepared by the partial sulfidation of $MoO_3$. The $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres showed relatively low and irreversible gas sensing characteristics at < $200^{\circ}C$. In contrast, the sensor showed high and reversible response (S=resistance ratio) to 5 ppm $NO_2$ (S=14.8) at $250^{\circ}C$ with low cross-responses (S=1.17-2.13) to other interference gases such as ethanol, CO, xylene, toluene, trimethylamine, $NH_3$, $H_2$, and HCHO. The $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres can be used as reliable sensors to detect $NO_2$ in a selective manner.
