  • The purpose of this study is to compare the predictive behaviors of the extended $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. Grid dependency is tested with the H-type grid and the O-type grid. Computations have been performed for a circular-to-rectangular transition duct. Numerical results for several sections along the streamwise have been obtained to compare with experimental results. The Reynolds number is 390,000 based on the bulk velocity at the inlet. The computed axial velocity contours, transverse velocity profiles, static pressure contours, peripheral skin friction coefficient, and peripheral wall static pressure distributions have been compared with experimental results. The computed results obtained with the extended $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model show better agreement with experimental results than those obtained with the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. Comparing to the computed results obtained with the H-type grid and O-type grid, those with H-type grid agree well with experimental results.

  • Turbulent flow calculations are performed for the two modern practical VLCCs with the sable forebody and the slightly different afterbody, i.e. KVLCC and KVLCC2. Three $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$ turbulence models are tested to investigate the differences caused by the turbulence models. The calculated results around the two VLCC hull forms using O-O grid topology and profile-fitted surface meshes are compared to the measured data from towing tank experiment. The realizable $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$model provided realistic wake distribution with hook-like shape, while the standard and RNG-based $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$models failed. It is very encouraging to see that the CFD with relatively simple turbulence closure can tell the difference quantitatively as well as qualitatively for the two hull forms with stern frameline modification.

  • Numerical simulation of flow past two-dimensional hill and valley is presented. Application of three turbulence models - the standard and modified (Kato-Launder) $k-{\varepsilon}$ models and standard $k-{\omega}$ model - is discussed. The computational methodology is briefly described. The mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles, obtained from numerical simulations of flow past the hill, are compared with the experimental data acquired in a boundary-layer wind tunnel at Colorado State University. The mean velocity, turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress profiles from numerical simulations of flow past the valley are compared with published experimental data. Overall, the results of simulations employing the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model were found to be in a better agreement with the experimental data than those obtained using the modified $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and the $k-{\omega}$ model.

  • The paper reports the outcome of a numerical study of flow over idealized L-shaped ribleted surfaces with two-equation turbulence models. In the present study, the Launder and Sharma's k-.epsilon. turbulence model (LS model) is basically N employed, but with a little modification of the additional .epsilon.-source term without affecting its level under 2-dimensional straining in which the term has been calibrated. Compared to the original LS model, the present model has predicted greatly improved drag reduction behavior for this geometry. As a drag reduction mechanism, it is found that the skin-friction in the riblet valleys might be sufficient to overcome the skin-friction increase near the riblet tip. The present predicted results are in good agreement with the recent DN S ones by Choi et al. (1993): differences in the mean velocity prof ile and turbulence quantities are found to be limited to the riblet cavity region. It is also found that turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress above the riblets are also reduced in drag-reducing configurations.

  • An anisotropic k-.epsilon. turbulence model for predicting the rotating flows is proposed with the simple inclusion of a new parameter dealing with the extra straining effects in the .epsilon.-equation. This model is employed to compute the effects of Coriolis forces on fully-developed flow in a rotating channel. The predicted results indicate that the present model captures fairly well the striking rotational-induced effects on the Reynolds stresses and the mean flow distributions, including the argumentation of turbulent transport on the unstable side (pressure surface) of the channel and its damping on the stable side (suction surface).

  • The effect of roughness is a change in the velocity and turbulence distributions near the surface. Turbulence models with surface roughness effect are applied to the fully developed flow in a two-dimensional, rough wall channel. Modified wall function model, low-Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model, and k-$\omega$ model are selected for comparison. In order to make a fair comparison, the calculation results are compared with the experimental data. The modified wall function model and the low-Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model require further refinement, while the k-$\omega$ model of Wilcox performs remarkably well over a wide range of roughness values.

  • It is an aim of this study to perform extensive numerical study for analyzing the anisotropic turbulence effects on spatial and temporal behaviors of diesel sprays after wall impingement. The turbulence model of Durbin is used for comparisons with the $k-\varepsilon$ model. The turbulence-induced dispersions of droplets are considered to describe the anisotropy of turbulence effectively and the spray/wall interactions are simulated using the model of Lee and Ryou. The present study investigates the internal structures of impinging diesel sprays such as Sauter mean diameter (SMD), loca1 droplet velocities, and local gas velocities and also compares the results predicted by two turbulence models with the experimental data. The Durbin's model considering the anisotropy of turbulence predicts both gas and droplet tangential velocities better than the$k-\varepsilon$ model does. It is concluded that the anisotropy of turbulence should be considered in simulating impinging diesel sprays.

  • This paper investigates the flow field and organism concentration in a UV disinfection channel in which vertical ultraviolet lamps are arranged in a staggered configuration. Turbulence is described by low Reynolds number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model, respectively. P-1 method has been employed to solve the radiative transfer equation. The obtained incident radiation is used to compute the inactivation term in the species equation. The CFD results are in good agreement with the existing experimental data for the UV channel. For the flow field, the low-Reynolds number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model is superior to the standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model. The approach velocity has a significant effect on the disinfection efficiency. The organism concentration at the outlet decreases fast to a low inlet velocity.

  • A numerical analysis based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations has been carried out for double-circular-arc (DCA) compressor cascades. Two types of double-circular-arc cascades were used in this analysis. The appropriate turbulence model for compressor analysis was selected among the conventional turbulence models such as Baldwin-Lomax, k-$\varepsilon$ and k-$\varepsilon$ models. The results of current study were compared with available experimental data at various incidence angles. The 2-D and 3-D computational codes based on SIMPLE/PWIM algorithm for collocated grid and hybrid scheme for the convective terms were the main features of numerical tools. As commonly known, turbulence modeling is very important for the prediction of cascade flows, which are extremely complex with separation and reattachment by adverse pressure gradient. For selection of turbulence model, 2-D analysis was performed. And then, k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with wall function chosen as the reasonable turbulence model for 3-D calculation was used to increase the efficiency of computation times. A reasonable result of 3-D flow pattern passing through the double-circular-arc cascade was obtained.
