Serum level changes of long chain-polyunsaturated fatty acids in patients undergoing periodontal therapy combined with one year of omega-3 supplementation: a pilot randomized clinical trial

  • Purpose: We aimed to investigate the impact of nonsurgical periodontal treatment combined with one-year dietary supplementation with omega (${\omega}$)-3 on the serum levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and arachidonic acid (AA). Methods: Fifteen patients with chronic generalized periodontitis were treated with scaling and root planing. The test group consisted of seven patients ($43.1{\pm}6.0$ years) supplemented with ${\omega}$-3, consisting of EPA plus DHA, three capsules, each of 300 mg of ${\omega}$-3 (180-mg EPA/120-mg DHA), for 12 months. The control group was composed of eight patients ($46.1{\pm}11.6$ years) that took a placebo capsule for 12 months. The periodontal examination and the serum levels of DPA, EPA, DHA, and AA were performed at baseline (T0), and 4 (T1), and 12 (T2) months after therapy. Results: In the test group, AA and DPA levels had been reduced significantly at T1 (P<0.05). AA and EPA levels had been increased significantly at T2 (P<0.05). The ${\Delta}EPA$ was significantly higher in the test compared to the placebo group at T2-T0 (P=0.02). The AA/EPA had decreased significantly at T1 and T2 relative to baseline (P<0.05). Conclusions: Nonsurgical periodontal treatment combined with ${\omega}$-3 supplementation significantly increased the EPA levels and decreased the AA/EPA ratio in serum after one year follow-up. However, no effect on the clinical outcome of periodontal therapy was observed.

  • RF 시스템에서 발룬(Balun)은 회로기판과 집적회로 사이의 임피던스 매칭에 사용되는 소자로서, 전력의 균등한 분배와 함께 180도 위상차를 만드는 역할을 하는 주요 회로부품이다. 시스템의 요구사양에 따라 balanced 임피던스가 $50\Omega$인 소자뿐만 아니라, 25 또는 100, $200\Omega$인 소자들도 많이 사용되는데, 대부분의 계측기가 $50\Omega$을 I/O 임피던스로 설정하고 있어, balanced 임피던스가 $50\Omega$이 아닌 경우 특성을 측정하기 위해서는 별도의 지그설계가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 중심주파수가 900MHz이고, balanced 임피던스가 $100\Omega$이며, LTCC 모듈 내에 내장되는 임베디드 발룬의 최적 평가를 위한 PCB 측정지그의 구조에 대하여 설계 및 시뮬레이션을 실시하고, 이에 따라 제작된 지그를 시뮬레이션 결과와 비교하였다. 지그를 구성하는 마이크로스트림의 임피던스를 조절함으로써 유효한 측정주파수범위를 넓힐 수 있었으며, 제작된 지그는 설계치에 거의 근접한 전송특성을 나타내었다.

  • The spherical non-commutative $\mathbb{S}_{\omega}$ were defined in [2,3]. Assume that no non-trivial matrix algebra can be factored out of the $\mathbb{S}_{\omega}$, and that the fibres are isomorphic to the tensor product of a completely irrational non-commutative torus with a matrix algebra $M_k(\mathbb{C})$. It is shown that the tensor product of the spherical non-commutative torus $\mathbb{S}_{\omega}$ with the even Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_{2d}$ has a trivial bundle structure if and only if k and 2d - 1 are relatively prime, and that the tensor product of the spherical non-commutative torus $S_{\omega}$ with the generalized Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_{\infty}$ has a non-trivial bundle structure when k > 1.

  • The effect of roughness is a change in the velocity and turbulence distributions near the surface. Turbulence models with surface roughness effect are applied to the fully developed flow in a two-dimensional, rough wall channel. Modified wall function model, low-Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model, and k-$\omega$ model are selected for comparison. In order to make a fair comparison, the calculation results are compared with the experimental data. The modified wall function model and the low-Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model require further refinement, while the k-$\omega$ model of Wilcox performs remarkably well over a wide range of roughness values.

  • Resistance standards from 1 ${\Omega}$ to 100 $k{\Omega}$, with calculable frequency dependencies of up to 1 MHz, have been developed for the calibration of commercial inductance-capacitance-resistance (LCR) meters and impedance analyzers. The resistors are designed on the basis of single bifilar loops. The typical resistance change from dc to 1 MHz is from 200 to $800\;{\mu}{\Omega}/{\Omega}$. According to the measurement results, the frequency dependencies of the resistors are severaltimes lower than the measurement uncertainty of commercial LCR meters.

  • In multiprocessor systems, there are Omega network and M network among various MIN's which interconnect the processor and memory modules. Both one-path Omega network and two-path M network are composed of Log2N stages. In this paper, Augmented M network (AMN) with 2**k+1 paths and Augmented Omega network (AON) with 2**k paths are proposed. The proposed networks can be acomplished by adding K stage(s) to M network and Omega network. Using destination tag, routing algorithm for AMN and AON becomes simple and multiple faults are tolerant. By evaluating RST(request service time) performance of AMN and AON with (Log2N)+K stages, we demonstrated the fact that MMIN (AMN) with 2**k+1 paths performs better than MMIN(AON) with 2**k+1. paths.

  • Polyamides have great potentials for diverse applications and the present production of their monomers mostly relies on resources from fossil fuel. Starting from undecylenic acid, a natural resource, we have developed both divergent and efficient processes for $C_{10}$, $C_{11}$ and $C_{12}$ ${\omega}$-amino acid and ${\alpha},{\omega}$-dicarboxylic acid monomers of the polyamides.
