It is necessary to have a model that describes the feature of the knee Joint with a sufficient accuracy. Koreans, however, do not have their own knee joint model to be used in the total knee replacement arthroplasty. They have to use European or American models which do not match Koreans. Three-dimensional visualization techniques are found to be useful in a wide range of medical applications. Three-dimensional imaging studies such as CT(computed tomography) and MRI(magnetic resonance image) provide the primary source of patient-specific data. Three-dimensional knee joint models were constructed by image processing of the CT data of 10 subjects. Using the constructed model, the dimensions of Korean knee joint were measured. And this study proposed a three-dimensional model and data, which can be helpful to develop Korean knee implants and to analyze knee joint movements.
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between velocity and factors which could affect the velocity of mandibular movement. For this study, 30 dental students without any masticatory signs and symptoms and 90 patients with temporomandibular disorders(TMD) were selected as the control group and the patients group, respectively. After determining Angle's classification and lateral guidance pattern of occlusion, clinical examination for TMD was perfomed. Velocity and distance of mandibular movements were recorded with BioEGN, reproducibility index of lateral excursions was evaluated by Pantronic(PRI) and BioEGN (BERI) activity in masticatory and cervical muscles were measured with BioEMG, and occlusal contact time and cross-arch unbalance(Total left-right statistics, TLR) on clenching were recorded with T-scan, respectively. The results of this study were as follows : 1. Velocity in the patients was faster than that in the controls in most mandibular movements, but on wide opening and closing movement, result was reverse. 2. Velocity on closing movements were faster than that on opening movements in the control group and a similar tendency was also shown in the patients group. 3. Patients with muscle disorders showed a tendency to have the highest value of velocity of all diagnostic subgroups, while patients with degenerative joint diseases showed a tendency to have the lowest value. 4. Patients with canine guidance showed a tendency to have the highest value of velocity in three subgroups by lateral guidance pattern, while patients with group function showed a tendency to have the lowest value. 5. BERI had a positive correlation with opening velocity on lateral excursion, while TLR had a negative correlation with opening velocity on swallowing. 6. EMG activity on clenching in masticatory muscles had negative correlation with opening velocity on border movements, and on swollowing, while the activity in rest correlated positively with opening velocity on border movements. 7. There were positive correlation between the velocity and the distance in long components of mandibular trajectory.
Objective: This study looks into biomechanical variables occurring when one moves in a sitting posture, and presents objective references to make improvements in work environments of farm workers. Background: The farmers have more common musculoskeletal disorders compared to other professions, because they are much more exposed to biomechanical risk factors. The sitting posture that is the representative form of the squatted, can cause typical knee joint diseases, such as osteoarthritis or patellofemoral pain syndrome of the knee joint. Therefore, a quantitative study of knee load upon the movement in a squatting posture is required. Method: In order to proceed with its investigation, the study examined movements in a sitting posture with and without a lower body supporter through a threedimensional image analysis and by using Surface EMG. The study compared and analyzed the average muscle activity and the maximum muscle activity as well. Results: Every movement in a sitting posture is related to loads onto the knee joints and, when the farm workers move to sides, the study observed a high level of bowlegged moment. The study also noticed differences in muscle activity of medial gastrocnemius with and without the lower body supporter. Conclusion and Application: The study argues that what has been discussed so far is evidence to prove how the farm working environments should be improved in consideration of these movements observed when the farm workers move in a sitting posture.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the mandibular positions and the habitual mandibular opening and closing movements in normal subject using the newly developed electric mandibular movement analyzing device(Saphon Visi-Trainer C-II.Tokyo Shizaisha Inc. Tokyo, Japan) One of the cause of the temporomandibular joint dysfunction has been considered abnormal mandibular positions especially the abnormal deviation between intercuspal position from retruded contact position. The subjects in this study were consisted of 55 young adults in 20 decade who had normal occlusion, no prosthodontic restorations and no history of disturbance or pain on temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscles. The results were as follows : 1. The deviations of intercuspal position from retruded contact position were 0.23mm in frontal view and 1.02mm in sagirral view. 2. The larger the deviation of intercuspal position from the retruded contact position, the higher the proportion of uncoincidence of the habitual nandibular closing and opening trajectories was, and the proportion was higher in sagittal view than frontal view, 10mm opening than 5mm opening. 3. Correlation between the deviation of intercuspal position from retruded contact position and uncoincidence rate of the habitual mandibular closing and opening trajectories was higher in frontal view than sagittal view.

This paper describes the possibility of analyzing gait pattern from the changes of the lower leg electrical impedance. This impedance was measured by the four-electrode method. Two current electrodes were applied to the thigh, knee, and foot., and two potential electrodes were applied to the lateral, medial, and posterior position of human leg. The correlation coefficients of the joint angle and the impedance change from human leg movement was obtained using a electrogoniometer and 4ch impedance measurement system developed in this study. We found the optimal electrode position for knee and ankle joint movements based on high correlation coefficient, least interference, and maximum magnitude of impedance change. The correlation coefficients of the ankle, knee, and the hip movements were -0.913, 0.984 and 0.823, respectively. From such features of the human leg impedance, it has been made clear that different movement patterns exhibit different impedance patterns and impedance level. This system showed feasibility that lower leg movement could be easily measured by impedance measurement system with a few skin-electrodes.
The purpose of study was to investigate the kinematic variables of Kenmotsu motion in Parallel bars. To this study, by 3 dimensional kinematical analysis of 4 male national gymnasts participants in the 28th Athens Olympic Game in 2004, kinematic data collected using video camera. Coordinate data were smoothed by using a fourth-order Butterworth low pass digital filter with cutoff frequency of 6Hz. The conclusions were as follows. 1. In P2, because the constrained swing movement made the movement of a rising back difficult7, the movements of Reg. were performed at low position after Air phase. 2. In E5 event, for the shake of a stable handstand and applied techniques like a Belle(E-value), a Belle Piked(super E-value), a vertical velocity in E2, a horizontal velocity in E3 and a vertical velocity in E4 were necessary for high velocities. 3. In E4 event, it was appeared that for a flexible body's movement of a vertical up-flight, the large angle of the shoulder joint and the flexion & extension of the hip joint were necessary in Air phase and a long flight time and vertical displacement made Reg. movements stable at the high position.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the change in the kinematics and kinetics of the knee joint depending on high-heeled shoes during sit-to-stand (SitTS) task. Methods: Nineteen healthy females participated in this study. The subjects performed the SitTS task wearing high-heeled shoes and barefoot. The experiment was repeated three times for each task with foot conditions. The kinematics and kinetics of the knee joint were measured and analyzed using a 3D motion analysis system. Results: The result of this study showed kinematic and kinetics differences in knee joints during the SitTS task based on high-heeled shoes. Significant differences in knee flexion angle were observed during SitTS. The knee extensor force showed statistically significant differences during SitTS tasks. At the initial of SitTS, the knee flexor and extensor moment showed significant differences. The knee extensor moment showed statistically significant differences at the terminal of SitTS. At the maximum of SitTS, the knee extensor moment showed statistically significant differences. Conclusion: Therefore, wearing high-heeled shoes during SitTS movements in daily life is considered to influence knee joint kinematics and kinetics due to the HH, suggesting the possibility of increased risk of patellofemoral pain, and knee osteoarthritis caused by changes in loading of the knee joint.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of high heeled shoes with the total contact insert (TCI) on the frontal plane of the joints for the lower extremity during the gait. Ten healthy females voluntarily participated in this study and the height of the high heeled shoes was 7 cm. A three-dimensional motion analysis system (VICON) and force plates were used to analyze the movements of the joints for the lower extremities. The results were as follows: There were no significant differences for the angle value on the event of the gait cycle in the maximum eversion and inversion of the ankle joint, the varus and valgus of the knee joint, and the adduction and abduction of the hip joint (p>.05). But, there was a significant difference or the range of motion in the ankle joint (p<.05). The value of ankle and knee moment with a TCI was less than the value for no TCI. And there were significant differences for the moment value of the maximum inversion and eversion on the ankle joint and for the maximum varus and valgus on the knee joint (p<.05). Therefore, a TCI would be effective in stabilizing the joints of the lower extremities and increasing the balance of a body to reduce the injure from a fall during the gait.
Purpose : To determine the relationship between clinical symptoms and magnetic resoncance (MR) images in patients presenting with temoporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Materials and Methods: This study was based on 172 joints in 86 patients presenting with TMJ disorders. Joint pain and sound during jaw opening and closing movements were recorded, and the possible relationship between disc positions and bony changes of the condylar head and the articular fossa in MR images in the oblique sagittal planes were examined. Data were analyzed by Chi-square test. Results : There was no statistically significant relationship between clinical symptoms and MR images in the patients with TMJ disorders. Conclusion: In the patient with TMJ disorders, joint pain and sound could not be specific clinical symptoms that are related with MR image findings, and asymptomatic joints did not necessarily imply that the joints are normal according to MR image findings.

A man model is a useful design tool for the evaluation of man machine systems and products. An arm reach trajectory prediction for such a model will be specifically useful to present human activities and, consequently, could increase the accuracy and reality of the evaluation. In this study, a three-dimensional reach trajectory prediction model was developed using an inverse kinematics technique. The upper body was modeled as a four link open kinematic chain with seven degrees of freedom. The Resolved Motion Method used for the robot kinematics problem was used to predict the joint movements. The cost function of the perceived discomfort developed using the central composite design was also used as a performance function. This model predicts the posture by moving the joints to minimize the discomfort on the constraint of the end effector velocity directed to a target point. The results of the pairwise t-test showed that all the joint coordinates except the shoulder joint's showed statistically no differences at .alpha. = 0.01. The reach trajectory prediction model developed in this study was found to accurately simulate human arm reach trajectory and the model will help understand the human arm reach movement.
