  • Korea Ginseng Corporation is a global ginseng company, owning one of the most leading brands in Korea, CheongKwanJang. Although Korea Ginseng Corporation was an undoubted market leader in the red ginseng market, it faced a new challenge in 2012 due to the changes in market environment. In order to keep its market leadership in a saturated and competitive market, the company decided to extend its product lines alongside the launches of new brands. In this article, the authors demonstrate the development process of the company's brand portfolio strategy to reveal how the company turned CheongKwanJang into a mega-brand. Also, this paper explores the impact of CheongKwanJang's reputation on new brands, thereby illustrating how the company successfully managed to introduce new products outside of the red ginseng category, ranging from organic food to a pet food market.

  • We investigated the flora of Jang-do (Isl.), an island of the Heuksan archipelago, located in Heuksan-myeon, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do and discussed the remarkable plants found there. Thirteen-field trips (total 27 days) were completed from May of 2004 to May of 2013. As a result, we identified the distribution of 423 taxa in Jang-do (Isl.), comprising 104 families, 285 genera, 335 species, 78 varieties and 10 forms. There are a total of 95 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants. The floristic regional indicators are as follows; four taxa of level V such as Impatiens furcillata, four taxa of level IV such as Hosta yingeri, 14 taxa of level III such as Ophioglossum vulgatum, 5 taxa of level II, and 58 taxa of level I. In addition 10 red data plants, 2 vulnerable species (VU) including Calanthe striata for. sieboldii, and 4 least concern species (LC) like Ardisia crenata, 2 not evaluated species (NE) such as Hosta yingeri, were found in the investigated area. An unrecorded species, Fragaria (Rosaceae), was found in a forest of Jang-do (Isl.) for the first time in Korea.

  • A hybrid dust-collector combining electrostatic charging with fabric filtration method was developed, and its performance characteristics were evaluated in this study. Charged particles build porous dendritic structure on the surfaces of filter by electrostatic attraction, increasing the collection efficiency of dust particles and reducing the pressure drop through the deposited dust layer and filter media. The cleaning performance of the dust layer is improved because the dendritic structured dust layer can be removed more easily by pulse jet cleaning flow. The results of the experiment showed a reduction of fine particle emission of 37% and the energy saving of 13% by precharging dust particles before filtration.

  • In December 2015, we have installed neutron monitor at the Jang Bogo station in Antarctica. The Jang Bogo station is the second science station which is located at the coast ($74^{\circ}\;37.4^{\prime}S$, $164^{\circ}\;13.7^{\prime}E$) of Terra Nova Bay in Northern Victoria Land of Antarctica. A neutron monitor is an instrument to detect neutrons from secondary cosmic rays collided by the atmosphere. The installation of neutron monitor at Jang Bogo station is a part of transferred mission for neutron monitor at McMurdo station of USA. Among 18 tubes of 18-NM64 neutron monitor, we have completed relocation of 6 tubes and the rest will be transferred in December 2017. Currently, comparison of data from both neutron monitors is under way and there is a good agreement between the data. The neutron monitor at Jang Bogo station will be quite useful to study the space weather when the installation is completed.

In the Goryeo Dynasty, there are 15 kinds of Jang(soybean paste or solution), among which are Jang (soybean paste fermented by mold)(6 documents), Yeomgjang, Yeomshi(2), and Gaejang(1). However, the cookbook at that time is defunct. The Goryeo Court relieved the famine-stricken people by proving them with Jang. In the Chosun Dynasty, 111 kinds of Jang were listed in the general documents, and 153 kinds in cookbooks. There were 55 kinds of general Jang, such as Jang(204), Yeomjang(63), Chojang, Goojang(7), and Gaejang(6), are listed in the general documents, and in the cookbooks, there are 55 kinds of Jang, such as Sookwhangjang(9 cookbooks), Daemaekjang(8), Myeonjang(8), Saengwhangjang (8), and Yooinjang(8), and among them, 13 kinds belong to the Chinese origin. A total of 9 Kinds of Ganjang(soybean solution fermented by mold), such as Soojang(30), Cheongjang(23), Gamjang(8), and Ganjang(3) are found in the general documents. In the cookbooks, 12 kinds of Jang, as Cheongjang(10), Cheonrijang(4), Ganjang(3), and etc., are listed. There were 9 kinds of Gochoojang(red pepper-soybean paste), such as Chojang(12), Gochojang(3), and etc., are listed in the general documents, and 9 kinds as Gochojang(7), Manchojang(7), rapid Manchojang(4), and etc., are in the cookbooks. In addition, 16 Kinds of Yookjang(fermented soybean-meat paste) as Haejang(15), Hyejang(11), Yookjang(11), and etc., are found in the documents, and 22 kinds as Nanjang(9), Gejang(6), Yookjang(5), Shoigogijang(4), and etc., are in the cookbooks. Eighteen Kinds of Shi(soybean paste fermented by bacteria) as Yeomshi(40), Shi(35), Shijang(6), and etc., are recorded in the documents, and 19 kinds as Jeonkookjang(6), Shi(4), Sooshijang(4), and etc., are in the cookbooks, and among them 11 kinds belong to the Chinese origin. Six kinds of Jipjang(aqueous soybean paste) as Jipjang(7), Uoopjang(4), Pojang (2), Jangzoop(2) are recorded in the documents, and 15 kinds as Jipjang(9), Zoopjeo(7), and Hajeoljipjang(5) are in the cookbooks. • Seok-jang is one of traditional seasonings prepared by solidification of the mixture of say sauce and salt for long period of aging time. In this study, the physiochemical properties of Seok-jang were investigated for the substitution of solar salt. Seok-jang exhibited highest mineral (P, Na, Fe, Mn, and Al) contents than those of solar salt and soy sauce, while showed lower soluble solids content than that of soy sauce. Seok-jang also exerted the highest pH value 7.70 compared to solar salt and soy sauce. Whereas magnesium and calcium contents of solar salts were 2.90 and 0.26 ppm, which were significantly higher than those of Seok-jang. In color values, $L^*$ value was highest in solar salt and lowest in say sauce, While the highest $a^*$ and $b^*$value were 6.19 and 18.2 observed in Seok-jang followed by a solar salt and soy sauce. On the other hand, less amount of insoluble solid and sand powder content were 0.03 and 0.07% found in Seok-jang, respectively. In conclusion, Seok-jang was suitable for the potentional substitution of natural salt ingredient.

  • The aim of this paper is to study the classification and arrangement system, the original texts, and the bibliographic deseription of Dae-Jang-Mock-Lock. The results of this study can be summarized as followings; 1. The first carving of Dae-Jang-Mock-Lock was assumed to be completed at latest by 1087 (King Sun-Jong 4, Koryo) when the first carving of Dae-Jang-Kyong, the complete collection of Buddhist Sutra, mas finished. Henee, Dae-Jang-Mock-Lack is safely said to be the oldest catalog in Korea. 2. The major function of Dae-Jang-Mock-Lock mas to facilitate the job of printing, managing, or arranging the Sutra tablets, rather than to serve as its references. 3. Dae-Jang-Mock-Lock mas classified in accordance with the classification sys tern of Gae-Woon-Suck-Kyo-Lock, a chinese Buddhist catalog. This system classified the complete collection of Buddhist Sutra into the three categories of "Mah$\={a}$y$\={a}$na Tripitaka", "Hinayan$\={a}$ Tripitaha", and "collected Biographies of Samgha", at the first gradation. And then the Mah$\={a}$yan$\={a}$ Tripitaka mas divided into the three categories of "Mah$\={a}$y$\={a}$na Sutra", "Mah$\={a}$y$\={a}$na Uparaksa", and "Mah$\={a}$y$\={a}$na Upadesa", at the second gradation. In the same manner the "Hinayan$\={a}$ Tripitaka was divided into "Hinayan$\={a}$ Sutra", "Hinayan$\={a}$ Uparaksa", and "Hinayan$\={a}$ Upadesa". The "Collected Biographies of Samgha" was divided into Brahman Samgha and Chinese Samgha. For this reason we Can name this main classification system as a Tripitaka Classification. 4. The first carving tablets of the Buddhist Sutra from Choen Shelf (天函) to Young Shelf (英函) were the same Sutra that were included in Gae-Woen-Suck-Kyo-Lock (開元釋敎錄), except those 4 omitted sutras of 22 volumes. But the other 7 sutras of 24 volumes were included as an extra addition in "Dae-Jang-Mock-Lock." 5. The 40 shelves and 376 volumes of Buddhist Sutra from the Doo Shelf (杜函) to the Kyong Shelf (輕函) in Dae-Jang-Mock-Lock were copied from the texts of Guran Edition (契丹本) 6. The 36 shelves of Buddhist Sutras from the Bun shelf (磻函) to the Mil shelf (密函) in Dae-Jang-Mock-Lock were the same as those included in Sock-Jung-Woen-Suck-Kyo-Lock (續貞元釋敎錄), except the 3 omitted sutras.
