In this study, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyacrylamide (PAM) have been used as self-curing agents to produce self-curing concrete (SC). Compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), bulk electrical resistivity, chloride ion penetrability, water permeability, and main microstructural characteristics were examined under different curing regimes, and compared to those of the control concrete mixture with no self-curing agents. One batch of a control mixture and one batch of a SC mixture were air-cured in the lab to act as non-water-cured samples. The water curing regimes for the control mixture included continuous water curing for 3, 7, and 28 days and periodical moist curing using wetted burlap for 3 and 7 days. Curing regimes for the SC mixtures included 3 days of water curing and periodical moist curing for 3 and 7 days. SC mixtures showed better microstructure development and durability performance than those of the air-cured control mixture. A short water curing period of 3 days significantly improved the performance of the SC mixtures similar to that of the control mixture that was water cured for 28 days. SC concrete represents a step towards sustainable construction due to its lower water demand needed for curing and hence can preserve the limited water resources in many parts of the world.
The control of flame shapes in a laminar pre-mixed flame has been experimentally investigated for propane/air pre-mixed laminar flames. Flames of different size and shapes are observed with heated wires or by controlling the equivalence ratio and flow rate of a mixture. The characteristics of the partitioning of a flame or the merge of flames are analyzed and explained by considering the balance between laminar flame speed and upstream mixture velocity. A combustor might be sized down while maintaining its heat production rate the same by partitioning a flame established in it. When the equivalence ratio of mixture is decreased, individual flames are merged together and the upstream mixture velocity can be practically decreased on a nozzle having opening ratio less than unity. As a result, the flame shape is to he adjusted until the newly established balanced condition is satisfied, and then. the stable combustion can be achieved again.

It is well known that the maximum likelihood estimator(MLE) in normal mixture models with unequal variances does not fall in the interior of the parameter space. Recently, a doubly smoothed maximum likelihood estimator(DS-MLE) (Seo and Lindsay, 2010) was proposed as a general alternative to the ordinary maximum likelihood estimator. Although this method gives a natural modification to the ordinary MLE, its computation is cumbersome due to intractable integrations. In this paper, we derive an EM algorithm for the DS-MLE under normal mixture models and propose a fast computational tool using a local quadratic approximation. The accuracy and speed of the proposed method is then presented via some numerical studies.
Characteristics of self-excited combustion oscillation are experimentally studied using confined premixed flames stabilized by a rearward-facing step. A new idea to suppress combustion oscillation was applied to the flames. The characteristics of unsteady combustion were examined, which is driven by forced pulsating mixture supply that can modulate its amplitude and frequency. The self-excited combustion oscillation having weaker flow velocity fluctuation intensity than that of the forced pulsating supply can be suppressed by the method. The effects of the forced pulsation amplitude and frequency on controlling self-excited combustion oscillations were also investigated comparing with the steady mixture supply. The unsteady combustion used in this experiment plays an important role in controlling self-excited combustion oscillations, and it also exhibits desirable performances, from a practical point of view, such as high combustion load and reduced pollutant emissions of nitric oxide.
In this paper, we investigate a Bayesian inference for software reliability models based on mean value functions which take the form of the mixture of beta distribution functions. The posterior simulation via the Markov chain Monte Carlo approach is used to produce estimates of posterior properties. Its applicability is illustrated with two real data sets. We compute the predictive distribution and the marginal likelihood of various models to compare the performance of them. The model comparison results show that the model based on the beta-mixture performs better than other models.

This paper presents a systematic approach for estimating material performance of concrete mixture design based on satisfaction curves developed from statistical evaluation of existing or newly obtained material property related data. In performance based material design (PBMD) method, concrete material used for construction of a structure is designed considering a structure's specified performance requirements based on its usage and characteristics such as environmental conditions, structure types, expected design life, etc.Satisfaction curves express the probabilities that one component of substrates (i.e., aggregate size, cement content, etc) of concrete mixture will sustain different criterion value for a given concrete mixture design. This study presents a statistical analysis method for setting up concrete material parameter versus concrete criterion relationships in the form of satisfaction curves and for estimating confidence bounds on these satisfaction curves. This paper also presents an analysis method to combine multiple satisfaction curves to form one unique satisfaction curve that can relate the performance of concrete to a single evaluating value. Based on several evaluated mixture design examples for various material properties, the validity of the proposed method is discussed in detail.
The angular dispersion-type non-scanning Fabry-Perot was applied to an ethanol-water mixture in order to investigate its acoustic properties such as the sound velocity and the absorption coefficient. The scattered light from the mixture was analyzed by using the charge-coupled-device area detector, which made the measurement time much shorter than that obtained by using the conventional scanning tandem multi-pass Fabry-Perot interferometer. The sound velocity showed a deviation from ultrasonic sound velocities at low temperatures accompanied by the increase in the absorption coefficient, indicating acoustic dispersion due to the coupling between the acoustic waves and some relaxation process. Based on a simplified viscoelastic theory, the temperature dependence of the relaxation time was obtained. The addition of water molecules to ethanol reduced the relaxation time, consistent with dielectric measurements. The present study showed that the angular dispersion-type Fabry-Perot interferometer combined with an area detector could be a very powerful tool in the real-time monitoring of the acoustic properties of condensed matter.

Due to the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), images are often corrupted. In recent days, Bayesian estimation techniques to recover noisy images in the wavelet domain have been studied. The probability density function (PDF) of an image in wavelet domain can be described using highly-sharp head and long-tailed shapes. If a priori probability density function having the above properties would be applied well adaptively, better results could be obtained. There were some frequently proposed PDFs such as Gaussian, Laplace distributions, and so on. These functions model the wavelet coefficients satisfactorily and have its own of characteristics. In this paper, mixture distributions of Gaussian and Laplace distribution are proposed, which attempt to corporate these distributions' merits. Such mixture model will be used to remove the noise in images by adopting Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) estimation method. With respect to visual quality, numerical performance and computational complexity, the proposed technique gained better results.

The catalytic heat exchanger, which integrates two functions of heat generation and heat exchange into one equipment, was designed and its characteristics were investigated by experiments. The surface of the fin tube was deposited with Pd catalyst. The conversion of the mixture in the catalytic heat exchanger was more significantly affected by the inlet velocity of the mixture than by the inlet temperature and equivalence ratio of the mixture. It was found that the catalytic surface area of the fin tubes should be sufficiently increased to make the combustion intensity of the catalytic heat exchanger as high as possible. Results showed that the fin tubes, placed in the triangularly staggered form, should be adjusted so that the mixture flows uniformly over all the catalytic fin surfaces.

A new ignition system concept was developed to improve ignition performance, accuracy of control and the reliability of the ignition system. The new ignition system has ho호 frequency discharge characteristics with 1.5-2.0 ms discharge duration, in place of the usual solitary longer duration event. We applied the system to a commercial engine to study its influence on the maximum combustion pressure attained during the cycle, when this peak pressure occurred, imep, variation rate of the engine speed and the flammability limit of a lean mixture. In this study, we clarified that the new ignition system had a beneficial effect of the lean mixture flammability limit. Also for a given mixture strength we found that the mew ignition system gave a higher peak cylinder pressure than in the case of the conventional ignition system.
