  • In aqueous slurry processing of silicon nitride, the interaction of dispersant and binder used as polymeric processing additives on the silicon nitride particle surface was studied to identify the effect of these processing polymeric additives on the ceramic powder processing. The adsoprtion isotherm study of anionic organic molecule as dispersant and nonionic organic molecules as binder of silicon nitricde was studied to investigate the effect of these processing organic additives on the physicochemical properties of silicon nitride particles. As anionic molecule adsorbed onto silicon nitrice surface, the IEP of silicon nitride shifted toward acidic pH and changed the stability of silicon nitride particle. However, the adsorption of binder as nonionic organic molecule onto silicon nitride surface did not changed the IEP but caused the decrease of electrostatic potentials of silicon nitride. These distinctive adsorption behaviors of organic additives on silicon nitride particles can be closely correlated to the stability of silicon nitride particles suspended in aqueous media.

  • In this study, zeolites were synthesized by a fusion and a hydrothermal methods using a coal fly ash and a waste catalyst. The recovery performance of metal ions on the structure property of synthetic zeolites was evaluated as comparing the adsorption kinetics (Lagergen 2nd order model) and isotherm (Langmuir model) of $Co^{2+},\;Ni^{2+}$, and $Cu^{2+}$ ions. The synthetic zeolites (Z-C1 and Z-W5) were similarly assigned to XRD peaks in a reagent grade Na-A zeolite (Z-WK : $Na_{12}Al_{12}Si_{12}O_{48}\;27.4H_2O$). Adsorption rates of Z-W5 and Z-C1 were in the order of $Cu^{2+}\;>\;Co^{2+}\;>\;Ni^{2+}\;and\;Ni^{2+}\;>\;Cu^{2+}\;>\;Co^{2+}$, respectively. They had influenced upon structure properties of zeolite. Selectivities of metal ions and maximum equilibrium adsorption capacities, $q_{max}$, in Z-C1 and Z-W5 were in the order of $Ni^{2+}$ (127.9 mg/g) > $Cu^{2+}$ (94.7 mg/g) > $Co^{2+}$ (82.6 mg/g) and $Cu^{2+}$ (141.3 mg/g) > $Co^{2+}$ (122.2 mg/g) > $Ni^{2+}$ (87.6 mg/g), respectively. The results show that the synthetic zeolites, Z-C1 and Z-W5, are able to recover metal ions selectively in wastewater.

  • Mill scale, an iron waste, was used to separate magnetite particles for the adsorption of phosphate from aqueous solution. Mill scale has a layered structure composed of wustite (FeO), magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$), and hematite ($Fe_2O_3$). Because magnetite shows the highest magnetic property among these iron oxides, it can be easily separated from the crushed mill scale particles. Several techniques were employed to characterize the separated particles. Mill scale-derived magnetite particles exhibited a strong uptake affinity to phosphate in a wide pH range of 3-7, with the maximum adsorptive removal of 100%, at the dosage of 1 g/L, pH 3-5. Langmuir isotherm model well described the equilibrium data, exhibiting maximum adsorption capacities for phosphate up to 4.95 and 8.79 mg/g at 298 and 308 K, respectively. From continuous operation of the packed-bed column reactor operated with different EBCT (empty bed contact time) and adsorbent particle size, the breakthrough of phosphate started after 8-22 days of operation. After regeneration of the column reactor with 0.1N NaOH solution, 95-98% of adsorbed phosphate could be detached from the column reactor.

  • Xanthoceras sorbifolia seed coat (XSSC) is a processing residue of the bioenergy crop. This work aimed to evaluate the applicability of using the steam explosion to modify the residue for dye biosorption from aqueous solutions by using methylene blue as a model cationic dye. Equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters for the biosorption of methylene blue on the steam-exploded XSSC (SE-XSSC) were evaluated. The kinetic data followed the pseudo-second-order model, and the rate-limiting step was the chemical adsorption. Intraparticle diffusion was one of the rate-controlling factors. The equilibrium data agreed well with the Langmuir isotherm, and the biosorption was favorable. The steam-explosion pretreatment strongly affected the biosorption in some respects. It reduced the adsorption rate constant and the initial sorption rate of the pseudo-second-order model. It enhanced the adsorption capacity of methylene blue at higher temperatures while reduced the capacity at lower ones. It changed the biosorption from an exothermic process driven by both the enthalpy and the entropy to an endothermic one driven by entropy only. It increased the surface area and decreased the pH point of zero charge of the biomass. Compared with the native XSSC, SE-XSSC is preferable to MB biosorption from warmer dye effluents.

  • Nonliving methanotrophic biomass was used as biosorbent to remove lead which is one of representative pollutants in metal-bearing wastewater. Solution pH, maximum uptake, biosorbent dose and ionic strength were considered as major factors for adsorption experiments. The optimum pH range for lead removal was increased 3.8∼11.0 for methanotrophic biomass compared to biosorbent-free control, pH of 8.4∼11.2. Removal efficiency of lead by methanotrophic biomass was pH dependent, but less sensitive than that of control. In isotherm experiments with 0.2g biosorbent/L at initial solution pH 5.0, methanotrophic biomass took up lead from aqueous solutions to the extent of 1085 mg/g biomass. Removal amount of lead increased with an increase of biomass dose. According to biomass dose for initial 1000 mg Pb/L at initial pH 5.0, the optimum amount of biomass for maximum lead removal per unit methanotrophic biomass was 0.2 g biomass/L. As a result of scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), lead removal by methanotrophic biomass seemed to be through adsorptions on the surface of methanotrophic biomass and exopolymers around the biomass. EDS spectra confirmed that lead adsorption appeared on the biomass and exopolymers that may be effective to lead removal comparing before and after contact with lead. Removal efficiency of lead was slightly affected by ionic strength up to 2.0 M of NaCl and NaNO$_3$respectively.

  • In this study, two novel Schiff base compounds including (3-(4-Chlorophenyl isoxazole-5-yl) methanol and (3-(2,4 dichlorophenol isoxazole-5-yl) methanol as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid solution were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and density functional theory (DFT) computations. The results showed that the corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE) is remarkably enhanced with the growing concentration of the Schiff base inhibitors. The results from Tafel polarization and EIS methods showed that IE decreases with gradual increments of temperature. This process can be attributed to the displacement of the adsorption/desorption balance and hence to the diminution of the level of a surface coating. Also, the adsorption of two inhibitors over mild steel followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Too, the results of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed that the Schiff base inhibitors form an excellent protective film over mild steel and verified the results by electrochemical techniques. Additionally, the results from the experimental and those from DFT computations are in excellent accordance.

  • In this study, PAN-SZ (polyacrylonitrile scoria zeolite) beads were prepared by immobilizing Na-A zeolite (SZ-A) synthesized from Jeju volcanic rocks (scoria) on the polymer PAN. FT-IR and TGA analysis results confirmed that the SZ-A was immobilized in the PAN-SZ beads. SEM images showed that the PAN-SZ beads are a spherical shape with 2 mm diameter and exhibit a porous inner structure inside the bead. The most suitable mixing ratio of PAN to SZ-A as the adsorbent for removing Sr ions was PAN/SZ-A = 0.2 g/0.3 g. The adsorption kinetic data for Cu and Sr ions were fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model. The Cu and Sr ion uptakes followed a Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum adsorption capacities at $20^{\circ}C$ were 84.03 mg/g and 75.19 mg/g, respectively. The amount of Sr ion adsorbed by SZ-A on the PAN-SZ beads was about 160 mg/g, which was similar to that adsorbed by SZ-A powder. Thus, the PAN-SZ beads prepared in this study are considered to be effective adsorbents for removing metal ions in aqueous solutions.

  • In this study, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from printing industries were analyzed, and an inorganic adsorbent, ${\gamma}-alumina$, was selected for the effective control of the VOC emissions. Printing processes commonly require inks, thinners, and cleaners, and they were mixed organic solvents containing aromatic compounds, ketones, and alcohols. Therefore, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) were selected as model compounds for this study. The adsorptive properties using ${\gamma}-alumina$ were determined for the model compounds. Both batch isotherm and continuous flow column tests demonstrated that the adsorption capacity of MEK and IPA was 3~4 times higher than that of toluene. The column test performed at an inlet toluene concentration of 100 ppm showed that an 80% breakthrough for toluene was observed after 3 hours, but both MEK and IPA were continuously adsorbed during the same time period. A numerical model simulated that the ${\gamma}-alumina$ could remove toluene at a loading rate of 0.4 mg/min only for a 4-hour period, which might be too short of a duration for real applications. Consequently, lifetime enhancement for ${\gamma}-alumina$ must be implemented, and ozone oxidation and regeneration would be feasible options.

  • The biosorption of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution was investigated using dried Rhodotorula glutinis as the biosorbent. The effects of pH, initial dye concentration, biosorbent dosage, and kinetic studies were determined to obtain valuable information for biosorption. Results indicated that most of the adsorbed MB bound within 30 minutes of contact and the MB adsorption capacity increased from 21.1 to 101.8 mg/g with the initial MB concentration increased from 50 to 300 mg/L. Additionally, the MB adsorption capacity gradually increased from pH 4.0 to 9.0, reaching its peak at an initial pH of 9.0. As the biomass load was increased from 0.25 to 4.0 g/L, the MB removal efficiency increased from 14.1 to 84.5%. The Langmuir model provided the best fit throughout the concentration range, and the maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) and Langmuir constant (b) were determined to be 135.14 mg/g and 0.026 l/mg, respectively. Furthermore, the biosorbent process of R. glutinis was found to follow pseudo-second-order kinetics and the calculated qeq,cal value showed good agreement with the experimental qeq value. Overall, the biosorption of MB by R. glutinis can be characterized as a monolayer, single site type phenomenon, and the rate-limiting step was determined to be the chemical reaction between the adsorbent and the adsorbate.

  • Allura Red (AR) is a water-soluble harmful tar-based food colorant (FD & C Red 40). Batch adsorption studies were performed for the removal of AR using bituminous coal based granular activated carbon as adsorbent by varying the operation parameters such as adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Experimental equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms. The equilibrium process was described well by Freundlich isotherm. From determined separation factor ($R_L$), adsorption of AR by granular activated carbon could be employed as effective treatment method. Temkin parameter, B was determined to 1.62~3.288 J/mol indicating a physical adsorption process. By estimation of adsorption rate experimental data, the value of intraparticle diffusion rate constant ($k_m$) increased with the increasing adsorption temperature. The adsorption process were found to confirm to the pseudo second order model with good correlation. Thermodynamic parameters like change of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature adsorption in the temperature range of 298~318 K. The negative Gibbs free energy change (${\Delta}G$ = -2.16~-6.55 kJ/mol) and the positive enthalpy change (${\Delta}H$ = + 23.29 kJ/mol) indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption process, respectively.
