  • Biomass of non-viable and dried brown marine algae Ecklonia radiata Turn. was used to examine Its cadmium uptake capability. Twelve different pretreatments on the algal biomass were prepared. Among these pretreatments, the algal biomass, which treated with 0.1 M NaOH and kept in water. bath (100$\^{C}$, 18 h) followed by washing with distilled water and squeezing, showed the highest amount of cadmium uptake as 1634 $\pm$ 195 mg/g dry biomass at pH 4.0 and 50$\^{C}$. Adsorption temperatures and pH levels played some Important role In cadmium uptake. However, cadmium uptake decreased dramatically at a lower pH than 4.0. Freundlich adsorption isotherm showed potent cadmium uptake capacity of the non-viable biomass. Pretreatments on the non-viable algal biomass shown in this study nay enhance the Eadmium removal in the industrial wastewater.

  • Sorption of $Ni^{2+}$ in aqueous solution was studied using montmorillonite. The experimental and equilibrium data fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm model. From the kinetics data for nickel sorption onto montmorillonite, the diffusion of $Ni^{2+}$ inside the clay particles was the dorminant step controlling the sorption rate and as such more important for $Ni^{2+}$ sorption than the external mass transfer. $Ni^{2+}$ was sorbed due to strong interactions with the active sites of the sorbent and the sorption process tends to follow the pseudo second-order kinetics. Thermodynamic parameters (${\Delta}G^{\circ},\;{\Delta}H^{\circ},\;{\Delta}S^{\circ}$) indicated a non spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process while the positive low value of the entropy change suggests low randomness of the solid/solution interface during the uptake of $Ni^{2+}$ by montmorilionite. Heavy metals such as $Ni^{2+}$ in aqueous bodies can effectively be sorbed by montmorillonite.

  • Microspheres are expected to be applied to biomedical areas such as solid-phase immunoassays, drug delivery systems, immunomagnetic cell separation. To synthesize microspheres for biomedical application, "two stage shot growth method" was developed. The uniformity ratio of synthesized microspheres was always smaller than 1.05. And the surface charge density (or the number of ionizable functional groups) of the microspheres synthesized by "two stage shot growth method" was 6~13 times higher than that of the microspheres synthesized by conventional seeded batch copolymerization. As a previous step for biomedical application, adsorption experiments of bovine albumin on microspheres were carried out under various conditions. The maximum adsorbed amount was obtained in the neighborhood of pH 4.5. Isoelectric point of bovine albumin is pH 5.0, so experimental result shows that it shifted to acid area. The adsorption isotherm was obtained, the plateau region was always reached at 2.Og/L (bulk concentration of bovine albumin). The effect of the kind and the amount of surface functional group was also examined.p was also examined.

  • The photocatalytic treatment of water contaminated with 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) was explored in bench-scale experiments in batch mode using a Pyrex tube coated with a thin film of $TiO_2$ located inside a photoreactor. The reactor was aerated by purging it with compressed air before initiating the photocatalytic reaction. The rate of TNT degradation approximated first-order kinetics. The reaction rate constant decreased as the TNT concentration increased from 25 to 100 mg/L, while the first-order kinetics could be modeled using a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The addition of the organic reductants methanol and EDTA significantly enhanced the rate of TNT degradation, with optimum results in the presence of 20% methanol by volume. EDTA increased the rate of TNT removal by enhancing the role of the reductants.

  • The adsorption behavior of 3CaO.$Al_2O_3$-sodium gluconate-$H_2O$ system by measuring adsorp-tion isotherm DTA and IR sepctra. The adsorbed amount of sodium gluconate on 3CaO.$Al_2O_3$ is exceedingly larger than 3CaO.$SiO_2$ and portland cement. From the DAT experiment the formation of complex is observed by the characteristic exothermic peak of the complex at 45$0^{\circ}C$ It is now strong deduced that the chemical bonding between gluconate anion and 3CaO.$Al_2O_3$ should be coordinative due to the complex formation on the surface 3CaO.$Al_2O_3$ from the IR spectra of sod-ium gluconate only and 3CaO.$Al_2O_3$ -sodium gluconate-$H_2O$.

  • The removal of heavy metals from synthetic wastewater containing Pb, Cr, Cd using previously washed and dried exhausted coffee was studied varying cohcentration, pH and temperature. All the heavy metals were removed in 3.0 minutes and the removal efficiency was maximum 80~90% with different pH and temperature conditions. The differences in removal efficiency between exhausted coffee and activated carbon under the same conditions were not seen. The removal efficiency was slightly increased with increasing pH in Cd and increasing temperature in Cr, respectively. The batch adsorption kinetics and adsorption equilibrium were examined and described by a first order reversible reaction and Freundlich isotherm, respectively. And the removal of Pb was found to have the best removal efficiency.

  • Walnut colorants were extracted from walnut hull and their dyeing properties on cotton were investigated. Effect of dyeing conditions on dye uptake and effect of mordanting on dye uptake, color change and colorfastness were explored. Walnut colorants showed low affinity to cotton compared with wool and its isotherm adsorption curve was Freundlich type. It was considered that hydrogen bonding and van der Waal's force were involved in the adsorption of walnut colorants onto cotton. The dyed cotton showed YR color and there was no significant color change as pH changed. The dyed cotton showed generally high colorfastness except fastness to washing and light. Mordanting did not improve dye uptake and colorfastness, and not affect color of the dyed cotton significantly.

  • Activated Rice-Hull carbon was developed to remove ammonia compounds in water matrix. Isotherm adsorption tests of ammonia were conducted using a bottle-point technique and column test. Residual ammonia after Jar-Test or passing through the column was determined by Indophenol method, and assessed the removal efficiency for ammonia of the adsorbent. As a result, the adsorption capacity for ammonia of activated racehull carbon was very larger than that of coconut shell carbon, because the rice hull carbon had the higher BET surface area of silicate. The activated racehull carbon is under the development as adsorbent to remove ammonia in drinking water and waste water.
