Recent Development in Polyurethanes for Automotives

  • The history of polyurethane is relatively shorter compared to that of the other polymers, though its importance has grown rapidly. Due to its unique properties, polyurethanes are widely applied in various fields. In particular, the automotive industry is one of the important application fields. To date, polyols and isocyanates used in the polyurethane industry are generally of petrochemical origin. Recently, owing to the oil crisis, legislation, and growing awareness towards environmental preservation, the demand for more sustainable and eco-friendly raw materials has increased. In this paper, the latest research and development trends in polyurethane applications were reviewed, with a focus on the automobile industry in areas such as seat comfort, noise reduction, light weight, biomass-based polyurethane, and recycling.

  • This study is focused on the synthesis of urea and amide derivatives particularly, since the amide moiety is an essential binding group at the binding site. Urea derivatives 3-7 and 13-14 were obtained by reaction of 2-aminopyrimidines and other amines with diverse isocyanates in pyridine as a solvent under reflux. The urea derivatives were obtained in low yield because of the highly electron deficient nature of the amino group of the 2-aminopyrimidine. Amide derivatives 8-10 were obtained in moderate yields by reaction of compound 1 with aryl chloride derivatives. Also, arylamine 11 was synthesized by Buchwald-Hartwig amination in moderate yields. Most of the compound did not show good activity against A375P melanoma cells, compared with Sorafenib as control compound.

  • We have identified sodium benzanilide (Na-BA), sodium diphenyl amine (Na-DPA) and sodium deoxibenzoin (Na-DB) as very efficient initiators for the living anionic polymerization of HIC. It has a slow propagation rate with the additive function of chain end protection, offering in the process a perfect control over MW and MWD. The well-defined amphiphilic coil-rod, coil-rod-coil, and rod-coil-rod block-copolymers of PHIC and P2VP with controlled architecture have been synthesized for the first time with ${\sim}100\;%$ yields. The resulting block copolymers showed lamellar film, donuts, solid and hollow micelles, by simply varying the solvents and the block compositions.

  • The low temperature anionic copolymerization of p-tolylisocyanate ($M_1$) with n-hexylisocyanate ($M_2$) in DMF was carried out with NaCN. Copolymers were characterized by osmometry and I. R. spectrophotometry. Also copolymer composition was analyzed by spectral measurements. The behavior of this copolymerization system was the type of less ideal, that is the $M_2$ prefers to react exclusively with the same kind of species. The stress-strain behavior of the copolymer obtained from equimolar comonomer feed exhibited somewhat brittle or rigid character.

  • The use of O-carbamoyloximes as photobase generators was investigated. $\alpha$-Meth-ylbenzilydeneamino phenylcarbamate(2a) and $\alpha$-methyl benzilydeneamino cyclohexylcarbamate(2b) were prepared by the reaction of phenyl or cyclohexyl isocyanates with acetophenone oxime , respectively. Aniline, phenylhydrazine and N, N'-diphenylhydrazine were detected in thephotolysis of 2a and cyclohexylamine and cyclohexylhydrazine in the photolysis of 2b. A monomer having pendant carbamoyloxyimino groups (BGM) was prepared by the reaction fo methancryloyloxyethyl iocyanate with acetophenone oxime, and copolymerized with styrene. The BGM copolymer films turned insoluble on UV irradiation, and the degree of insolubilizationwas increased by post-baking. The photocrosslinking was thought to be due to coupling of resulting pendant aminyl radicals, and the thermal crosslinking was due to association of resulting amino and hydrazino groups by hydrogen bonding. The introduction of epoxy groups into polymer increased the degree of thermal crosslinking by post-baking.

  • Various new kinds of biheterocyclic betaines were prepared by the reaction of 3-substituted-6,7-dihydro-5H-thiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine with electrophiles such as isothioyanates, isocyanates in aprotic solvents, respectively. The biheterocyclic betaines containing methyl group at 3-position of thiazole ring were obtained particularly in good yields at room temperature. These betaines were also reacted with alkyl halide to give quarternary ammonium salts. It was found that these betaines are dissociated in polar organic solvents depending on temperature. And new biheterocyclic compounds via ring transformation were prepared by the reaction of 8-phenyl (thiocarbamoyl)-3-phenyl-6,7-dihydro-5H-thiazolo[3 ,2-a]pyrimidinium-betaine with ${\alpha}$-halo kester ${\alpha}-halo$ ester and ${\gamma}-halo$ keto ester.

A Study on Properties of the Urethane Prepolymer Synthesis with Polyether-diol and Aromatic Diisocyanate System (폴리에테르-디올과 방향족 디이소시아네이트계의 우레탄 프리폴리머 합성에 따른 특성연구)

  • The composition of isocyanates and polyols influence prepolymeric properties of adhesive and calking sealant based on polyurethanes (PU). One component moisture curing prepolymers, which reacted with surface humidity of substrate, were synthesized in several kinds of composition. Reactivity, structural change and properties of the prepolymers were studied as a preliminary step to manufacture PU based adhesive and sealant. To study the effects of mole ratio ([NCO]/[OH]), we used toluene diisocyanate (TDI), 4, 4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), and ether-polyols such as PTMG and PPG which have good resistance to hydrolysis and excellent low-temperature properties. The each prepolymers could be prepared in different molecular weight without any significant structural change. The mole ratio 1.78 of [NCO] to [OH] showed the fastest reactivity. It was confirmed that effect of polyols was larger than that of isocyanates on the prepolymer in reactivity. Several kinds of compounds were manufactured with each prepolymer, and tensile and properties were tested. And the optimum quantity of curing accelerator for the PU was 0.05~0.1%. In the tensile test, TDI based PU was superior to MDI based PU, and also PTMG based PU was superior PPG based PU.

Self-Diffusion of Hydrophobically End-Capped Polyethylene Oxide Urethane Resin by Using Pulsed-Gradient Spin Echo NMR Spetroscopy

  • Hydrophobically End-capped polyethylene oxide Urethane Resin(HEUR)-associating polymers, HEUR 35(8), HEUR 35(12), and HEUR 35(18), comprise a polyethylene oxide (PEO) having a molecular weight of 35,000 that is end capped with two C$\_$8/H$\_$17/, C$\_$12/H$\_$25/, and C$\_$18/H$\_$37/ alkyl chains, respectively. These associating polymers were synthesized by condensation reactions with polyethylene oxides and alkyl isocyanates. The self-diffusion coefficients of HEUR-associating polymers were measured in aqueous solution by pulsed-gradient spin-echo (PGSE) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. All polymers underwent a decrease in their mean diffusion coefficients as the concentration was increased. However, the dispersion of the diffusion coefficients, ${\beta}$, about the mean fluctuated with changes in concentration. The large dispersion at low concentrations of HEUR 35(8) and HEUR 35(12) is related to the interaction between hydrophobic end groups, and the large dispersion at high concentrations of HEUR 35(18) is correlated with transient network formation. These results are valuable for predicting the associating mechanism of the large aggregates before and after their critical micelle concentration.

  • Wood powder filled phenolic resin composites of different composition were prepared and their mechanical properties were investigated for optimum conditions. The composites showed maximum mechanical strength when the phenolic resin content was 45 wt%. Polyurethane prepolymer(PU) was evaluated as a modifier of the phenolic resin composites. Blocking of the isocyanates in the PU with phenol was necessary for homogeneous mixing of raw materials for the components. Maximum mechanical strength of the PU modified composites was observed when the PU content was 5 wt%. It was found that the mechanical strength of the composites cured at $210^{\circ}C$ were higher than those of the composites cured at $150^{\circ}C$.

  • The FU-fat conjugates(4a-e) as a prodrug have been synthesized by condensing various fatty acids(1a-e) via isocyanates(2a-e) as carbamoyl group at $N^1-position$ of 5-fluorouracil and their structures characterized. Preliminary testing for their antitumor effect was carried out on leukemia L1210 cells in culture. Most of them(4a-d) like the parent FU exhibited less than 50% inhibition on grouth of the cultrued cells at the concentration of $1\;{\times\;10^{-7}M$. Only a dicarboxylic acid derivative, 4e, showed over 50% inhibition at the same level.
