  • The purpose of this study was to minimize salt water intrusion into freshwater aquifers and limit the development of freshwater aquifers, by selecting an appropriate excavation depth of in the western coastal area of Jeju Island. The study site was mostly basaltic lava, which was mainly composed of trachy basalt. A vertical logging test was conducted to investigate the vertical distribution of the groundwater and saline groundwater interface in the study well. It was found that freshwater groundwater, saline groundwater, and freshwater groundwater are distributed from the surface to approximately 16 m, 16~50 m, and 50~60 m, below the ground, respectively. In order obtain saline groundwater and minimize the inflow of freshwater into this well, the drilling depth should be limited in the range of 16~50 m from the surface. Thus, saline groundwater well development should be carried out with reference to the measurement results, which depend on the drilling depth and EC (electrical conductivity) obtained with drilling apparatus for geology and ground handling.

  • EIA should be regarded as an aid to improve the decision making processes because it seeks public opinion and external knowledge in order to ensure the maximum degree of fairness and balance in the final decision as much as possible. According to the above benefits, various decision making systems containing EIA concepts were developed in the area of ground water, traffic, disaster or accident and environment in Cheju Island. But because the development of various decision making systems can be the cause of new impact, it was studied the cause and impact of their development. The major reasons for developing the various decision making system like EIA are the lack of the consideration for the impact of project when it is selected project fulfilling EIA and the increase of the effort for the improvement in the professional quality for one subject without the comprehensive assessment among the subject related to environmental impacts. And the development of the various decision making systems like EIA has caused the several impacts like cost elavoration, the relay of project period, etc. Therefore, after it is improved the problems of present EIA on the comprehensive assessment, the various decision making systems like EIA should be integrated in EIA decision making system.

  • Cheju Island has an optimal environment for herviborous animal production. However, the infrastructure has been degraded under the pressure from the development of tourism and thus the technological development for livestock production has not been great. This is the time to re-evaluate and re-direct the system of livestock production on the island. My suggestions on the development of grassland agriculture on the island are as follows : 1. Grassland area of Cheju, 65,695 ha should be maintained and the local government should try to improve more grasslands which can hold 3 or more cattle per ha on pasture. including enterpriseowned lands. 2. For better management of co-operatives village. the local government should evaluate the conditions of the grasslands yearly after being grazed and suggest a new management method accordingly. 3. In order to strengthen grassland research. it is recommended that Cheju Experiment Station be reorganized as a Grassland Research Institute or Department of Grassland Science be added. 4. [mport of good forage varieties. especially legumes, from foreign countries and distribution to farmers after adaption studies, are required to improve nutritive values of forage produced. 5. Methods for production of good quality forage seeds at rcasonablc prices should be established.

  • For the effective development or preservation of Tokdo, the natural environments in the ambient sea area should be well investigated. The wave deformations and wave breaking in the vicinity have much affected the bottom morphology of Tokdo as well as its ecological environment. The present study investigates the wave deformations and wave breaking through a numerical model. The final goal is to provide the fundamental wave data for the effective development or preservation of Tokdo in future. The extended mild slope equation was applied to Tokdo sea area for three different deep water wave conditions (S, SSE, NNE directions). The results showed that for the S and SSE directions the wave heights in the area between the east island and the west island were very low with the level of 1~2m, but for the NNE direction they appeared pretty high with 3~4m, In the sea area near the northwest of west island, the wave heights were low to be 1~3m for all three directions of deep water wave.

  • Current operating system and passenger satisfaction level of remote island route are examined in this study. A large quantity of survey was conducted among remote island route passengers and the result was examined in depth The survey result slightly exceeded average effectiveness rating; 2.8 based on a five-point scale was obtained. The survey shows that the service satisfaction level is not very high When long term remote island route development plan is established, a support from the government is expected for survey result to reflect on the development plan.

  • Many countries have interested in islands with their values in nature such as future sustainable resource and new expansion of marine territory. As territorial and cultural assets, these islands have been the source of our national competitiveness and, then, Korean government has initiated island management policy that provides a basis for the development and protection of islands. Consequently, spatial data and database for resource management have been required. In this sense, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the condition and status of various natural resources in Jeju islands. Jeju has 63 islands including 55 uninhabited islands. Then, an Island Information System(IIS) based on geographical information system(GIS) has been proposed. This ISS will provide not only a measure for effective resource management but also systematic services for releasing useful resource information.

  • Urban development and densification have led to the Urban Heat Island Effect, in which the temperature of urban space is higher than the surrounding areas, and the intensity is increasing with climate change. In addition, when the city's air temperature rises in summer, low-income, elderly population, and socially vulnerable people who have health problems lack the ability to cope with the elevated heat environment. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the urban heat island area of Seoul through Hotspot analysis, which is a spatial statistics technique, and explored physical environments, demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of urban heat island effect areas using logistic regression models. This study performed urban heat island hotspot analysis using the average air temperatures of the 423 administrative dongs in Seoul. Analysis results identified that the urban heat islands were concentrated in Jung-gu, Jongno-gu, Yongsan-gu, and Yeongdeungpo-gu. Logistic regression analysis results indicated that urban heat island areas of Seoul were affected by residential floor area ratio, commercial facility floor area ratio, overall floor area ratio, impervious surface ratio, and normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI). In addition, as a result of analyzing the vulnerable area of thermal environment considering the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the heat island area, urban heat island areas of Seoul were significantly associated with the proportion of low-income elderly living alone. The result of this study provided useful insights for urban thermal environmental design and policy development that could improve the thermal environment for the socially disadvantaged urban population.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the environment change of Cheju Island as land development process using GSIS(Geo-Spatial Information System) technique. We implemented the process based on the maps of soil color, underground water pollution points, land use, land development planning and land sight seeing supported by Cheju Province Office. To use the maps for GSIS data, first we transformed the picture data of the office into raster structured picture data using scanner. Second, the coordinate system was added to raster data using 1/50000 geographic map. Third, we estimated land planning process using GSIS technique(overlay and reclass technique). The results showed that land development effected the natural environment(forest, green field, farm land). However, the chemical pollution and land sight seeing was not so much effected by the land development that was found.

  • Our aim was to compare the community structure of fish in the coast of Wando Island between 2001 and 2013. Using a gape net with wings, we collected 61 taxa, wherein the most dominant species was Engraulis japonicus. The sea temperature in the middle layer of the survey station in 2001 (after June) was obviously higher than that in 2013, which was < $20^{\circ}C$. Except for Thryssa kammalensis in 2013, the log transformed individuals of seven dominant species, selected using a SIMPER (similarity-percentages procedure) analysis, decreased. Decreases in the individuals of Gobiidae spp., the warm-water species Trichiurus japonicus and Conger myriaster, and the migratory species Syngnathus schlegeli, Setipinna taty and Sardinella zunasi, which arrive in the southern coastal waters of Korea during summer-autumn, could be due to decreasing sea temperature in 2013. Thus, fish species diversity, estimated from rarefaction and k-dominance curves, declined in the coastal waters of Wando Island from 2001 to 2013, resulting in a significant difference in fish community structure.
