상악 측절치의 치내치에 대한 증례보고 (DENS INVAGINATUS IN MAXILLARY LATERAL INCISORS: REPORT OF 2 CASES)

  • 치내치(dens invaginatus)는 치아 발생 과정 중 경조직이 석회화되기 전에 법랑질 상피가 함입되어 생기는 치아 기형이다. 치내치는 함입된 정도에 따라 다양한 형태학적 변이를 보이는데 이러한 기형은 미생물이 침입할 수 있는 통로가 될 수 있어 치수조직의 괴사와 치근단 농양 또는 치은 농양의 원인이 된다. 이러한 경우 근관의 복잡한 해부학적 형태 때문에 근관 치료가 매우 어렵다. 본 증례는 상악 좌측 측절치의 동통을 주소로 내원한 두 명의 환아들에 관한 것이다. 첫 번째 증례는 수산화 칼슘제재를 이용한 근관치료를 시행하여 양호한 결과를 얻었고 두 번째 증례는 치아를 발거하였다. 발거된 치아는 미세전산화 단층촬영을 이용하여 해부학적 형태를 살펴보았기에 보고하는 바이다.

Skin Corrosion and Irritation Test of Nanoparticles Using Reconstructed Three-Dimensional Human Skin Model, EpiDermTM

  • Effects of nanoparticles (NPs) on skin corrosion and irritation using three-dimensional human skin models were investigated based on the test guidelines of Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD TG431 and TG439). EpiDerm$^{TM}$ skin was incubated with NPs including those harboring iron (FeNPs), aluminum oxide (AlNPs), titanium oxide (TNPs), and silver (AgNPs) for a defined time according to the test guidelines. Cell viabilities of EpiDerm$^{TM}$ skins were measured by the 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2.5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide based method. FeNPs, AlNPs, TNPs, and AgNPs were non-corrosive because the viability was more than 50% after 3 min exposure and more than 15% after 60 min exposure, which are the non-corrosive criteria. All NPs were also non-irritants, based on viability exceeding 50% after 60 min exposure and 42 hr post-incubation. Release of interleukin 1-alpha and histopathological analysis supported the cell viability results. These findings suggest that FeNPs, AlNPs, TNPs, and AgNPs are 'non-corrosive' and 'non-irritant' to human skin by a globally harmonized classification system.

Assessing the Systemic Toxicity in Rabbits after Sub Acute Exposure to Ocular Irritant Chemicals

  • Eye is a highly vascularised organ. There are chances that a foreign substance can enter the systemic circulation through the eye and cause oxidative stress and evoke immune response. Here the eyes of rabbits were exposed, for a period of 7 days, to 5 known ocular irritants: Cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC), sodium salicylate (SS), imidazole (IMI), acetaminophen (ACT) and nicotinamide (NIC). The eyes were scored according to the draize scoring. Blood collected from the treated rabbit were analyzed for haematological and biochemical parameters. After sacrifice, histological analysis of the eye and analysis of pro-inflammatory biomarkers ($IL-1{\alpha}$, $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-8 and $TNF-{\alpha}$) in the cornea using ELISA was carried out. Spleen was collected and the proliferation capacities of spleenocytes were analyzed. Liver and brain were collected and assessed for oxidative stress. The eye irritation potential of the chemicals was evident from the redness and swelling of the conjunctiva and cornea. Histopathological analysis and ELISA assay showed signs of inflammation in the eye. However, the haematological and biochemical parameters showed no change. Spleenocyte proliferations showed only slight alterations which were not significant. Also oxidative stress in the brain and liver were negligible. In conclusion, chemicals which cause ocular irritation and inflammation did not show any systemic side-effects in the present scenario.

Activation of the Chemosensory Ion Channels TRPA1 and TRPV1 by Hydroalcohol Extract of Kalopanax pictus Leaves

  • TRPA1 and TRPV1 are members of the TRP superfamily of structurally related, nonselective cation channels. TRPA1 and TRPV1 are often co-expressed in sensory neurons and play an important role in somatosense such as cold, pain, and irritants. The first leaves of Kalopanax pictus Nakai (Araliaceae) have long been used as a culinary ingredient in Korea because of their unique chemesthetic flavor. In this study, we observed the intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ response to cultured cells expressing human TRPA1 (hTRPA1) and human TRPV1 (hTRPV1) by $Ca^{2+}$ imaging analysis to investigate the ability of the first leaves of K. pictus to activate the hTRPA1 and hTRPV1. An 80% ethanol extract of K. pictus (KPEx) increased intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ influx in a response time- and concentration-dependent manner via either hTRPA1 or hTRPV1. KPEx-induced response to hTRPA1 was markedly attenuated by ruthenium red, a general blocker of TRP channels, and HC-030031, a specific antagonist of TRPA1. In addition, the intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ influx attained with KPEx to hTRPV1 was mostly blocked by ruthenium red, and capsazepine, a specific antagonist of TRPV1. These results indicate that KPEx selectively activates both hTRPA1 and hTRPV1, which may provide evidence that the first leaves of K. pictus primarily activate TRPA1 and TRPV1 to induce their unique chemesthetic sense.

종대황추출물의 항자극 효과 (Anti-irritation Effects of Rheum undulatum L. Extract)

  • 본 연구에서는 화장품에 빈번히 사용되고 있는 다양한 자극원에 대한 종대황추출물의 자극 완화효과를 알아보기 위한 연구에 관한 것이다. 종대황추출물의 각질형성세포에서의 항염증 효과를 조사하기 위하여, 배양된 인간 각질형성세포에서 분비되는 사이토카인인 IL-8과 TNF${\alpha}$의 량을 측정하였다. 그 결과 종대황추출물은 농도 의존적으로 상기 사이토카인의 분비를 억제하였다. 사람 피부에서 3 mM methyl nicotinate에 의해 유발된 자극성 피부염의 항염증 효과를 평가한 결과, 종대황 추출물이 함유된 제품의 도포 부위에서 홍반이 유의하게 감소하였다. 인체첩포시험에서는 5.0% 락틱산이 함유된 제형에 종대황추출물을 첨가 할 경우 우수한 자극 억제 효과를 보여주었다. 또한 사용성 시험을 실시한 결과, 종대황추출물을 함유한 O/W 에멀젼에서 우수한 항자극 효과를 보임을 확인하였다.

Modified Widman Flap과 Modified Flap 후의 치료효과에 관한 임상적 비교연구 (Comparative Clinical Study on the Treatment Effects Following Modified Widman Flap and Modified Flap)

  • Periodontal surgery can be directed to remove the irritants from the tooth surface and reduce the periodontal pocket. The purpose of this study is to compare the clinical effects after between modified Widman flap and modified flap in periodontal patients. Ninety six molar area teeth of 9 patients were used. One of sextants performed a modified Widman flap, while the other side performed a modified flap. After initial periodontal therapy, the following measurements prior to surgery(baseline) were taken : pocket depth, gingival recession, clinical attachment level, tooth mobility, bleeding on probing. Also these measurements were taken at 4 weeks, 8weeks, and 12 weeks after surgery. Significant decrease of pocket depth was shown in both techniques, and the degree of decrease was significant in modified flap than modified Widman flap at 12 weeks. Significant increase of gingival recession was shown in both techniques, and the degree of increase was significant in modified Widman flap than modified flap at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks. Significant attachment gain was shown in both techniques, and the degree of increase was significant in modified flap than modified Widman flap at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks. Significant increase of tooth mobility was shown in both techniques at 4 weeks, but the decrease of tooth mobility was shown at 12 weeks. Greater decrease of bleeding on probing was shown in both techniques at 4 weeks. Modified flap was better than modified Widman flap in the decrease of gingival recession and the attachment gain. These results indicate that modified flap operation is better than modified Widman flap operation in the effect of periodontal treatment.

Human Exposure and Health Effects of Inorganic and Elemental Mercury

  • Mercury is a toxic and non-essential metal in the human body. Mercury is ubiquitously distributed in the environment, present in natural products, and exists extensively in items encountered in daily life. There are three forms of mercury, i.e., elemental (or metallic) mercury, inorganic mercury compounds, and organic mercury compounds. This review examines the toxicity of elemental mercury and inorganic mercury compounds. Inorganic mercury compounds are water soluble with a bioavailability of 7% to 15% after ingestion; they are also irritants and cause gastrointestinal symptoms. Upon entering the body, inorganic mercury compounds are accumulated mainly in the kidneys and produce kidney damage. In contrast, human exposure to elemental mercury is mainly by inhalation, followed by rapid absorption and distribution in all major organs. Elemental mercury from ingestion is poorly absorbed with a bioavailability of less than 0.01%. The primary target organs of elemental mercury are the brain and kidney. Elemental mercury is lipid soluble and can cross the blood-brain barrier, while inorganic mercury compounds are not lipid soluble, rendering them unable to cross the blood-brain barrier. Elemental mercury may also enter the brain from the nasal cavity through the olfactory pathway. The blood mercury is a useful biomarker after short-term and high-level exposure, whereas the urine mercury is the ideal biomarker for long-term exposure to both elemental and inorganic mercury, and also as a good indicator of body burden. This review discusses the common sources of mercury exposure, skin lightening products containing mercury and mercury release from dental amalgam filling, two issues that happen in daily life, bear significant public health importance, and yet undergo extensive debate on their safety.

치수세포에서 PPARγ의 항 염증작용에 관한 연구 (ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EFFECTS OF PPARγ ON HUMAN DENTAL PULP CELLS)

  • 치수는 상아질로 둘러싸인 간엽조직으로 다양한 세포와 기저 물질들로 구성되어 있으며 혈관과 신경조직이 분포되어 있다. 치수의 염증은 조직의 분해를 야기하며 이는 Matrix Metalloproteinase에 의해 세포 외 기질의 분해가 촉진되어 병적인 과정을 거치게 된다. 이에 Lipopolysaccharide에 의한 MMP와 inflammatory cytokine의 유도와 peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR)에 의한 염증매개 물질의 조절에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 사람의 치수세포를 다양한 LPS농도에 노출시킨 후 24시간째 MMP-2, MMP-9의 변화를 보고 LPS에 의해 자극된 치수세포에서 ICAM-1, VCAM-1, $IL-1{\beta},\;TNF-{\alpha}$의 분비가 증가됨을 알 수 있었다. 또한 Adenovirus $PPAR{\gamma}\;(Ad/PPAR{\gamma})$$PPAR{\gamma}$ agonist인 rosiglitazone를 LPS로 자극된 치수세포에 처리하였을 때 48시간째 MMPs와 Adhesion molecules, cytokines의 감소를 확인하였다. 이로써 사람의 치수세포에서 $PPAR{\gamma}$가 가지는 항 염증효과에 대해 지속적 인 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

LCD 제조공정에서 사용되는 화학물질의 종류 및 특성 (Types & Characteristics of Chemical Substances used in the LCD Panel Manufacturing Process)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate types and characteristics of chemical substances used in LCD(Liquid crystal display) panel manufacturing process. Methods: The LCD panel manufacturing process is divided into the fabrication(fab) process and module process. The use of chemical substances by process was investigated at four fab processes and two module processes at two domestic TFT-LCD(Thin film transistor-Liquid crystal display) panel manufacturing sites. Results: LCD panels are manufactured through various unit processes such as sputtering, chemical vapor deposition(CVD), etching, and photolithography, and a range of chemicals are used in each process. Metal target materials including copper, aluminum, and indium tin oxide are used in the sputtering process, and gaseous materials such as phosphine, silane, and chlorine are used in CVD and dry etching processes. Inorganic acids such as hydrofluoric acid, nitric acid and sulfuric acid are used in wet etching process, and photoresist and developer are used in photolithography process. Chemical substances for the alignment of liquid crystal, such as polyimides, liquid crystals, and sealants are used in a liquid crystal process. Adhesives and hardeners for adhesion of driver IC and printed circuit board(PCB) to the LCD panel are used in the module process. Conclusions: LCD panels are produced through dozens of unit processes using various types of chemical substances in clean room facilities. Hazardous substances such as organic solvents, reactive gases, irritants, and toxic substances are used in the manufacturing processes, but periodic workplace monitoring applies only to certain chemical substances by law. Therefore, efforts should be made to minimize worker exposure to chemical substances used in LCD panel manufacturing process.

향나무추출물의 광손상으로부터 피부세포 보호와 자극완화 효과에 대한 연구 (Protection of UV-derived Skin Cell Damage and Anti-irritation Effect of Juniperus chinensis Xylem Extract)

  • 태양광선과 산소는 피부세포에 자유라디칼(free radical)과 활성산소종(Reactive oxygen species, ROS)을 생성시켜 DNA의 손상과 세포막 지질의 과산화를 유발한다. 또한 콜라겐과 같은 세포 외 기질을 파괴하는데 관여하는 효소(matrix metallo-proteinhse, MMPs)의 발현에 영향을 주어, 결합조직을 손상시키며, 피부 염증을 유발시켜 조직을 파괴하고 노화를 가속화시킨다. 본 연구는 자외선과 SLS에 의한 피부손상에 대한 향나무추물물의 피부 보호 효과에 대한 것이다. 실험 결과 프리라디칼 및 슈퍼옥사이드 라디칼 소거 효과가 우수하게 나타났으며, 피부 콜라겐과 같은 메트릭스를 분해하는 효소인 MMP-1의 활성 및 발현 저해 효과는 섬유아세포에서 UVA 조사에 의한 실험에서 우수하게 나타났으며, 피부세포 배양액에 대해 zymography를 실시하여 활성이 감소됨을 확인하였다. 피부 각질형성세포에서 자외선에 의해 유도된 염증관련 사이토카인인 인터루킨 6의 발현량 실험에서도 무처리군에 비해 향나무추출물이 인터루킨 6를 30% 정도 저해효과가 나타났으며, 염증반응 중 cyclooxygenase (COX)에 의한 경로에서 생성되는 프로스타글란딘 E$_2$의 생성량도 감소시켰다. 사람 피부에서 SLS (0.5%)첩포로 유발된 자극성 피부염의 항염증 효과 평가 시 SLS에 의해 유발되는 자극정도가 피검자의 피부상태에 따라 다양하게 나타났으며, 향나무추출물 함유 에멀젼 제품 도포 실험에서는 피부 홍반 완화 효과와 피부장벽 회복 효과가 우수하게 나타났다. 따라서 향나무추출물은 자외선 조사 및 SLS에 의한 피부손상에 대한 보호 효과를 가진 화장품에서 우수한 소재로 적용될 수 있다. 녹두추출물을 화장품에 사용하였을 경우 우수한 항자극 효과를 보임을 확인하였다.완화시키는데 기여하였다. 이러한 결과를 종합하여 한국에서 삼림쇠퇴를 유발할 수 있는 스트레스요인들의 잠재적 상호작용을 모식화하였다. 나아가 그것을 완화할 수 있는 복원방안을 토양개량과 식생복원의 측면에서 제시하였다. mg/l)치 농도가 높을지라도 이것이 낮은 cinnamic acid와 protocatechuic acid에서 현저한 억제현상을 보였다. 서양등골나물 임상의 토양보다 서양등골나물이 분포하지 않는 토양의 중금속 함량이 전반적으로 높았다. 특히 Al, Fe 및 Mn의 함량이 높았으며 이들 중금속은 total phenolic compound 함량이 높은 잎에 대부분이 축적되었다." separating himself from the real world.
