  • In this paper we examine several methods tor calculating the reflection of irregular waves from a perforated-wall caisson breakwater using a regular wave model. The first method is to approximate the irregular waves as a regular wave whose height and period are the same as the root-mean-squared wave height and significant wave period, respectively, of the irregular waves. The second is to use the regular wave model, repeatedly, for each frequency component of the irregular wave spectrum. The wave period is determined according to the frequency of the component wave, and the root-mean-squared wave height is used for all the frequencies. The third method is the same as the second one except that the wave height corresponding to the energy of each component wave is used. Comparison with experimental data from previous authors shows the second method is the most adequate, giving reasonable agreement in both frequency-averaged reflection coefficients and reflected wave spectra.

  • Three building structures haying piloti frames in the lower two stories were selected as prototypes and were analyzed using nonlinear static analysis to investigate the seismic capacity of these buildings. The first one has a symmetrical moment resisting frame (Model 1), the second has an infilled shear wall in the central frame (Model 2), and the third has an infilled shear wall only in one of exterior frames (Model 3), The analytical results were compared with those of shaking table tests with regards to the overstrength and ductility of the irregular buildings. Infilled shear wall in Model 2 and Model 3 induced large overstrength factors, 6.8 and 6.0, respectively, which are about two times larger than that of Model 1, 3.5. The displacement ductility ratio in Model 2 was only 2.5, due to the shear failure of wall in the piloti stories, whereas those of Model 1 and Model 3 reached 3.2.

  • The wave height distributions in front of a vertically perforated wall structures for obliquely incident uni-directional irregular waves are mainly investigated by using 3D hydraulic experiments. The difference and similarity of wave propagation along the plain and perforated wall structures are investigated and particularly the effects of side walls in chamber and relative chamber width are analyzed. This study shows that the wave height distribution patterns for normalized wave heights in front of structure is significantly different between the plain and perforated wall structures, and the side wall in the chamber suppresses the growth of waves.

  • An inverse radiation analysis is presented for the estimation of the boundary emissivities for an absorbing, emitting, and scattering media with diffusely emitting and reflecting opaque boundaries. The finite-volume method is employed to solve the radiative transfer equation for a two-dimensional irregular geometry. A hybrid genetic algorithm is proposed for improving the efficiency of the genetic algorithm and reducing the effects of genetic parameters on the performance of the genetic algorithm. After verifying the performance of the proposed hybrid genetic algorithm, it is applied to inverse radiation analysis in estimating the wall emissivities in a two-dimensional irregular medium when the measured temperatures are given at only four data positions. The effect of measurement errors on the estimation accuracy is examined.

  • A 1257-m-long irregular deep foundation pit located in the central of Nanjing, China was constructed using the combined full-width and half-width top-down method. Based on the long-term field monitoring data, this study analyzed the evolution characteristics of the vertical movement of the columns, internal force of the struts, and axial force of the structural beam and slab. The relevance of the three mentioned above and their relationship with the excavation process, structural system, and geological conditions were also investigated. The results showed that the column uplift was within the range of 0.08% to 0.22% of the excavation depth, and the embedded depth ratio of the diaphragm wall and the bottom heave affected significantly on the column uplift. The differential settlement between the column and diaphragm wall remained unchanged after the base slab was cast. The final settlement of the diaphragm wall was twice the column uplift. The internal force of the struts did not varied monotonically but was related to numerous factors such as the excavation depth, number of struts, and environmental conditions. Additionally, the dynamic force and deformation of the columns, beams, and slabs were analyzed to investigate the inherent relationship and variation patterns of the responses of different parts of the structure.

  • An inverse radiation analysis is presented for the estimation of the wall emissivities for an absorbing, emitting, and scattering media with diffusely emitting and reflecting opaque boundaries. In this study, a repulsive particle swarm optimization(RPSO) algorithm which is a relatively recent heuristic search method is proposed as an effective method for improving the search efficiency for unknown parameters. To verify the performance of the proposed RPSO algorithm, it is compared with a basic particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm and a hybrid genetic algorithm(HGA) for the inverse radiation problem with estimating the wall emissivities in a two-dimensional irregular medium when the measured temperatures are given at only four data positions. A finite-volume method is applied to solve the radiative transfer equation of a direct problem to obtain measured temperatures.

  • Recurrent pectus excavatum (PE) after a Ravitch operation is not uncommon. Extensive costal cartilage resection from the previous Ravitch procedure can lead to an irregular, unstable chest wall depressions with a varying degree of deformity. The optimal approach to cover the chest wall defect and remodel the deformity, remains unknown. We report the case of a 27-year-old woman seeking surgery for the third time for recurrent PE. The patient presented with 2-time recurrent pectus excavatum following a failed Ravitch procedure and subsequent pectus bar repair. The entire chest wall reconstruction and remodeling entailed covering the chest wall defect with 2 titanium plates across both sides of the rib cage, and lifting and fixing the depressed chest wall with 2 parallel pectus bars.

  • Torsional behavior of eccentric structure under seismic loading may cause the stress and/or deformation concentration. Hence it is hard to estimate the seismic behavior of the structure with plan irregularity. This study suggests the method to setup the seismic fragility curve of the torsionally irregular structures. The suggested fragility curve may be acquired from the fragility surface defined on the D-R plan according to the estimated torsional behavior. The torsional behavior is predicted considering the inelastic region by adapting the inelastic stiffness of each wall. Finally the system displacement is converted to the spectral acceleration and the fragility curve for the seismic excitation level is presented. In addition, the fragility curve considering the excitation direction is proposed.

  • Successful use of displays in stores arouses consumers' curiosity, and induces them to purchase a product after a visit. Facade is a word meaning an external front wall of a building, and is usually the first point of visual contact for the consumers. The present study is an empirical investigation of external appearance of a clothing store, with a $2{\times}2{\times}2$ factorial design of facade, show window, and wall surface material designed for the purpose of the study. Dependent variables were store image variables and attitude toward store. A total of 320 questionnaires from male and female consumers were used for the analysis. Facade type and material had significant main and interaction effects, while show window type had no meaningful effects overall. A facade of irregular design prompted significantly higher levels of perceived 'elegance', 'uniqueness', and 'attractiveness' of the store. Material itself did not have significant influence but did have significant interaction effect with facade design. The interaction effect was found in store attitude as well. In order to create a positive store attitude, a concrete material facade should have an irregular design. Companies owning fashion brands should carefully select facade type and wall surface material in the visual merchandising strategies of a store.
