In this study, the reduction kinetics and behaviors of oxides in the water-atomized iron powder have been evaluated as a function of temperature ranging $850-1000^{\circ}C$ in hydrogen environment, and compared to the reduction behaviors of individual iron oxides including $Fe_2O_3$, $Fe_3O_4$ and FeO. The water-atomized iron powder contained a significant amount of iron oxides, mainly $Fe_3O_4$ and FeO, which were formed as a partially-continuous surface layer and an inner inclusion. During hydrogen reduction, a significant weight loss in the iron powder occurred in the initial stage of 10 min by the reduction of surface oxides, and then further reduction underwent slowly with increasing time. A higher temperature in the hydrogen reduction promoted a high purity of iron powder, but no significant change in the reduction occurred above $950^{\circ}C$. Sequence reduction process by an alternating environment of hydrogen and inert gases effectively removed the oxide scale in the iron powder, which lowered reduction temperature and/or shortened reduction time.

Degradation of the insecticide O,O-diethyl O-3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyl phosphorothioate (chlorpyrifos) in aqueous solution was investigated using iron salts and potassium persulfate during ZVI treatment through a series of batch experiments. The degradation rate of chlorpyrifos increased with increases in the concentrations of iron salts and potassium persulfate in the aqueous system. Ferric chloride was found to be the most effective iron salt for the ZVI-mediated degradation of chlorpyrifos in aqueous solution. Further, the iron salts tested could be arranged in the following order in terms of their effectiveness: $FeCl_3$> $Fe_2(SO_4)_3$> $Fe(NO_3)_3$. The persulfate-ZVI system could significantly degrade chlorpyrifos present in the aqueous medium. This revealed that chlorpyrifos degradation by treatment with $Fe^0$ was promoted on adding ferric chloride and potassium persulfate. The kinetics of the degradation of chlorpyrifos by persulfate-amended $Fe^0$ was higher than that for iron-salt-amended $Fe^0$. This suggests that using a sequential $Fe^0$ reduction-ferric chloride or $Fe^0$ reduction-persulfate process may be an effective strategy to enhance the removal of chlorpyrifos in contaminated water.
In this study, the reductive decolorization of three acid and basic dyes using modified zero-valent iron (i.e., acid-washed iron (Aw/Fe) and palladium coated iron (Pd/Fe)) at various pH conditions (pH 3~5) was experimentally investigated and the decolorization characteristics were evaluated by analyzing the absorbance spectra and reaction kinetics. In the case of acid dyes such as methyl orange and eriochrome black T, color removal efficiencies increased as initial pH of the dye solution decreased. However, the color removal of methylene blue, a basic dye, was not affected much by the initial pH and more than 70% of color was removed within 10 min. During the decolorization reaction, the absorbance of methyl orange (${\lambda}_{max}=464nm$) and eriochrome black T (${\lambda}_{max}=528nm$) decreased in the visible range but increased in the UV range. The absorbance of methylene blue (${\lambda}_{max}=664nm$) also decreased gradually in the visible range. Pseudo-zero order, pseudo-first order, and pseudo-second order kinetic models were used to analyze the reaction kinetics. The pseudo-second order kinetic model was found to be the best with good correlation. The decolorization reaction rate constants ($k_2$) of methylene blue were relatively higher than those of methyl orange and eriochrome black T. The reaction rate constants of methyl orange and eriochrome black T increased with a decrease in the initial pH.

Reduction 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene by zero valent iron was studied in a batch reactor under anoxic conditions. Results showed that the removal of TNT was a pseudo-first order and the rate was dependent on the available metal surface area. Final product, presumably triaminotoluene, accumulated in the solution as well as on the metal surface. However, little amounts of aminodinitrotoluenes were detected. Therefore, it is postulated that the reduction of nitro group occurs simultaneously in all three position.
The use of support materials on the nanoparticle synthesis and applications has advantages in many aspects; resisting the aggregation and gelation of nanoparticles, providing more active sites by dispersing over the supports, and facilitating a filtering process. In order to elucidate the influence of the supports on the nitrate reduction reactivity, the supported iron nanoparticles were prepared by borohydride reduction of an aqueous iron salt in the presence of supports such as activated carbon, silica and polyethylene. The reactivity for nitrate reduction decreased in the order of unsupported Fe(0) > activated carbon(AC) supported Fe(0) > polyethylene(PE) supported Fe(0) ${\ge}$ silica supported Fe(0). Rate constants decrease with increasing initial nitrate concentration implying that the reaction is limited by the surface reaction kinetics.

The kinetics of sintering of Co-Fe materials was studied. The main objective was to establish the effects of iron content and sintering parameters on the microstructure and phase composition of the as-sintered material. Specimens containing from 3 to 25 wt.% iron were sintered in a dilatometer for one hour at 900, 1000 and $1150^{\circ}C$ in either hydrogen or nitrogen atmosphere. The length of specimens during the heating, hold at temperature and cooling steps were monitored to establish the sample's shrinkage. Microstructural observations were carried out on polished and etched transverse sections which were also subjected to the X-ray phase analysis.
Bioleaching studies of metals from a spent catalyst were conducted using both adapted and unadapted bacterial cultures. The bacterium used in this experiment was Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. A comparison of the kinetics of leaching was made between the two cultures by varying the leaching parameters, including the pulp density, particle size and temperature. Both cultures showed similar effects with respect to the above parameters, but the leaching rates of all metals were higher with the adapted compared to the unadapted bacterial cultures. The leaching reactions were continued for 240 h in the case of the unadapted bacterial culture, but only for 40 h in the case of the adapted bacterial culture. The leaching reactions followed first order kinetics. In addition, the kinetics of leaching was concluded to be a diffusion control model; therefore, the product layers were impervious.

Reductive dechlorination of chlorophenols by nickel coated iron was investigated to understand the feasibility of using Ni/Fe for the in situ remediation of contaminated groundwater. Zero Valent Iron(ZVI) was amended with Ni(II) ions to form bimetal(Ni/Fe). Dechlorination of five chlorophenol compounds and formation of intermediates were examined using Ni/Fe. Rate constant for each reaction pathway was quantified by the numerical integration of a series of differential rate equation. Experimental results showed that the sequence of hydrodechlorination rate constant was in the order of 2-CP>4-CP>2,4-DCP>2,4,6-TCP>2,6-DCP. The hydrodechlorination pathways for the conversion of each chlorophenol compound involves a full dechlorination to phenol via both concerted and stepwise mechanisms. Reaction pathways and corresponding kinetic rate constants were suggested based on the experiments and numerical simulations.

FeS/FeS$_2$ minerals have been known to be potentially useful reductant to the removal of common organic contaminants in groundwater and soil. This research is aimed at improving our understanding of factors affecting the pathways and rates of reductive transformation of Hexachloroethane by catalytical iron minerals in natural system. Hexachloroethane is reduced by FeS/FeS$_2$ minerals under anaerobic condition to tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene with pentachloroethyl radical as the intermediate products. The kinetics of reductive transformations of the Hexachloroethane have been investigated in aqueous solution containing FeS, FeS$_2$. The proposed reduction mechanism for the adsorbed nitrobenzene involves the electron donor-acceptor complex as a precursor to electron transfer. The adsorbed Hexachloroethane undergo a series of electron transfer, proton transfer and dehydration to achieve complete reduction. It can be concluded that the reductive transformation reaction takes place at surface of iron-bearing minerals and is dependent on surface area and pH. Nitrobenzene reduction kinetics is affected by reductant type, surface area, pH, the surface site density, and the surface charge. FeS/FeS$_2$-mediated reductive dechlorination may be an important transformation pathway in natural systems.
