Effect of water scarcity during thermal-humidity exposure on the mineral footprint of sheep

  • Objective: Combination of two stressors on alteration of mineral footprints in animals needs due attention to meet maximum production and welfare, particularly in grazing sheep. This study tested whether ewes (Ovis aries) exposed to water deprivation and thermal-humidity stressors had altered mineral footprints in their wool, serum, urine, and feces. Methods: Nine ewes (age = 3 years; mean body weight = 41±3.5 kg) were divided among a control group with free access to water, and treatment groups with water deprivation lasting either 2 h (2hWD) or 3 h (3hWD) after feeding. Using a 3×3 Latin square design, animals were assigned to treatment groups for three sampling periods of 21 days each (n = 9). Blood was collected by jugular venipuncture. Wool was collected at the end of periods 2 and 3. Metabolic crates designed with metal grated floors were used for urine and feces collection. We measured sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), chloride (Cl), calcium (Ca), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn). Results: The wool mineral levels did not differ between the treatment groups, although K was marginally lower (p = 0.10) in the 2hWD group. The serum and urine mineral levels did not differ between the treatments (p>0.05). Fecal K was significantly lower in the 2hWD group than in the other groups (p≤0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, water deprivation and thermal-humidity exposure altered the excretion of K, but not of other minerals, in the wool, urine, feces, or serum of ewes. Thus, no additional mineral supplementation is needed for water deprived ewes during thermalhumidity exposure.

  • Scientific studies of conservation techniques and materials in Korea have experienced fast development since international practice and academic knowledge have been introduced to Korea from Japan, France, Germany, and etc from the late 1960s. In recent years, it has been observed that the academic standard of research and the level knowledge of the field in Korea at present are far advanced to compete with many countries. However, many Korean cases still have displayed that the standard and the quality of conservation practice need to be improved. This research examined several cases of derelict restoration of metal relics executed by non-conservators and the effects of their ignorant use of irreversible materials on the valuable objects. The purpose of the study is to display the problem of such treatments and to suggest a need of framework to prevent the loss of original form from them. Metal Buddha statue (Cosmic Buddha) in Borim Temple (National Treasure No. 117), which was conserved by an unexperienced non-conservator, has suffered from a serious problem of corrosion because of the use of destructive material, iron chloride. Another case for metal Buddha statue in Dopian Temple (National Treasure No. 63) displays a representative example of using irreversible materials, Cashew and such ignorant application made a later conservation treatment so difficult in removing the material from the surface of the statue. In conclusion, the research argued that the understanding of materials used in the objects, and the value of relics is important, and pre-experiments before applying conservation materials to a valuable heritage are essential in the conservation treatment.

천연염색 재료를 이용한 한지의 검정색 염색 특성 (Natural Dyeing Characteristics of Black Color to the Korean Traditional Hand-made Paper (Hanji))

  • 전통 오방색 중 흑색 재현을 위하여 오배자, 신나무 잎, 감즙, 밤껍질, 묵즙 등을 이용하여 한지에 천연염색을 실시하였다. 흑색 염색을 위해 염료별 단독염색 및 복합염색을 행하였고, 매염제 및 염색순서를 달리하여 색상의 발현 특성을 조사하였다. 아울러 염료의 농도(o.w.f) 변화에 따른 염색 특성을 조사하여 흑색 발현을 위한 최적 염색조건을 구명하였다. 한지의 흑색 천연염색 발현에 있어 오배자가 가장 중요한 염료 물질로 나타났으며, 복합염색의 경우 오배자 염색 $\rightarrow$ 초산구리 매염 $\rightarrow$ 신나무 잎 염색 $\rightarrow$ 철 매염의 순서가 가장 우수한 흑색염색 특성을 나타냈다.

여수석유화학산단 내 VOCs에 대한 오염원 분류표의 개발 및 CMB 모델에 의한 기여도 산정 (Development of Source Profiles and Estimation of Source Contribution for VOCs by the Chemical Mass Balance Model in the Yeosu Petrochemical Industrial Complex)

  • The purposes of this study were to characterize the local levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), to develop source profiles of VOCs, and to quantify the source contribution of VOCs using the CMB (chemical mass balance) model. The concentration of VOCs had been measured every 6-day duration in the SRO monitoring site in the Yeosu Petrochemical Industrial Complex from September 2000 to August 2002. The total of 35 target VOCs, which were included in the TO-14 designated from the U.S. EPA, was selected to be monitored in the study area. During a 24-h period, the ambient VOCs were sampled by using canisters placing about 10 ~ 15 m above the ground level. The collected canisters were then analyzed by a GC-MS in the laboratory. Aside from ambient sampling at the SRO site, the VOCs had been intensively and massively measured from 8 direct sources and 4 general sources in the study area. The results obtained in the study were as follows; first, the annual mean concentrations of the target VOCs were widely distributed regardless of monitoring sites in the Yeosu Petrochemical Industrial Complex. In particular, the concentrations of BTX (Benzene, Toluene, Xylene), vinyl chloride were higher than other target compounds. Second, based on these source sample data, source profiles for VOCs were developed to apply a receptor model, the CMB model. Third, the results of source apportionment study for the VOCs in the SRO Site were as follows; The source of petrochemical plant was apportioned by 31.3% in terms of VOCs mass. The site was also affected by 16.7% from wastewater treatment plant, 14.0% from iron mills, 8.4% from refineries, 4.4% from oil storage, 3.8% from automobiles, 2.3% from fertilizer, 2.3% from painting, 2.2% from waste incinerator, 0.6% from graphic art, and 0.4% from gasoline vapor sources.

머위 추출액에 의한 직물의 염색성과 자외선 차단성 (Dyeing Properties and Ultraviolet-cut Ability of Dyed Fabrics with Petasites japonicus Extract)

  • It is well known that the Petasites japonicus has been used for a long time medicine for the treatment of allergic diseases such as lacquer poisoning. However, the exact components and dyeing properties of its effects is still not known. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the dyeing property and ultraviolet-cut ability of silk and nylon fabrics that was dyed variously with the Petasites japonicus. The Petasites japonicus extract was done by boiling with distilled water at $100^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. As mordanting agent, we used Aluminum potassium sulfate ($AlK(SO_4)_2{\cdot}12H_2O$), Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate ($CuSO_5{\cdot}5H_2O$), Iron(II)Chloride ($FeCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$). The best K/S value of dyeing temperature and time, all the fabrics were $100^{\circ}C$, 90min. Silk fabric was dyed yellow(0.8Y 7.6/2.2) and nylon fabric was dyed reddish yellow(10.1 YR 7.4/3.0). Silk fabric and nylon fabric was changed greenish yellow on mordanting with $CuSO_5{\cdot}5H_2O$ and $FeCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$ respectively. And the colorfastness of washing and dry-cleaning was improved by using mordanting agent(4~5 grade). Ultraviolet-cut ability(UV-B) was showed more 90% in dyed nylon fabrics.

식생활교육이 저나트륨식 적응에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Dietary Education on Low-sodium Diet Adaptation)

  • Korean style DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) and a dietary education program for sodium reduction were developed. Reduced sodium diets (15 and 30% reductions) were developed from general diets for 3 consecutive weeks from Monday through Saturday. Subjects (19 total) were classified into two groups according to dietary education. Experimental period was from June 24 to July 23, 2012. Total sum of adaptation scores for low sodium diets significantly increased in the group that underwent dietary education compared to that without (p<0.05). After the experiment, both groups showed significantly increased values in terms of food group balance, sodium-related nutrition knowledge, attitude, and practice by paired t-test. Especially, group that underwent dietary education showed significantly higher values for attitudes by ANCOVA pre-test as a variation (p<0.01). For the results of the nutrient intake survey, group that underwent dietary education showed significantly increased values for dietary fiber (p<0.01), vitamin A (p<0.001), vitamin K (p<0.001), vitamin C (p<0.01), Folic acid (p<0.001), vitamin B12 (p<0.01), calcium (p<0.01), iron (p<0.05), and zinc (p<0.05) and significantly decreased values for sodium (p<0.05) and chloride (p<0.005). Subjects adapted to reduced sodium diets showed apparent improvements in sodium-related knowledge, attitude, practice and intake of nutrient, and these improvements were even higher in the group that underwent dietary education compared to that without. Thus, adaptation to low sodium diet combined with dietary education can improve dietary habits.

보리 유식물에 처리한 수은의 분포 및 독성 연구 (Toxic Effects and Distribution of Mercury in Barley Seedlings)

  • The inhibitory effects of mercury ions on the growth of barley seedlings were studied and the distribution of metal elements in the organs of treated plants was investigated by using synchrotron radiation induced X-ray emission (SRIXE). Although the treatment of mercury ions caused growth inhibition, the mercury-specific increase in variable fluorescence and the abolishment of energy-dependent quenching in broken barley chloroplasts as shown by Moon et at. (1992) were not observed in the leaves of growth-inhibited seedlings. Instead the treatment of mercury decreased Fmax and Fo values. However, Fmax/Fo ratio and photochemical and nonphotochemical quenching coefficients were not affected significantly. By SRIXE analysis of $10\mu\textrm{m}$ mercury chloride treated seedlings, accumulation of mercury in roots was observed after 1 hour of treatment and similar concentration was sustained for 48 hours. Relative contents of mercury was high in roots and underground nodes where seeds were attachedl but was very low in leaves. Iron and zinc were also distributed mainly in the lower parts of the seedlings. However after 72 hours of treatment the contents of these metals in roots decreased and their distribution became more uniform, which may lead to death of the plants. These results suggest that the observed inhibitory effects on barley seedlings upto 48 hours after the treatment is not due to direct damages in the photosynthetic apparatus, but due to its accumulation in roots and the consequent retardation of the growth of barley seedlings. The decrease in Fmax and Fo is probably due to the decrease in chlorophyll and protein contents caused by the retardation of growth. The observed slow expansion of primary leaves could be also explained by the retardation of growth, but the fluorescence induction pattern from the leaves did not show characteristic symptoms of leaves under water stress.

증기양생이 고로슬래그 콘크리트의 압축강도에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Steam Curing on Compressive Strength of Slag Binder Concrete)

  • 본 논문은 이산화탄소 배출저감 및 산업폐기물을 재활용하기 위한 일환으로 산업부산물인 고로슬래그 미분말을 사용하였다. 고로슬래그 미분말은 선철의 제련 시 부산물로서 발생하는 고온 용융상태의 고로슬래그를 물로 급냉 시켜 유리화한 것으로 반응성이 높아 시멘트 및 콘크리트용 혼화재료로 다양하게 사용되고 있다. 고로슬래그 미분말을 치환한 콘크리트는 수화발열속도 저감, 온도상승 억제, 장기강도 향상, 수밀성 증대에 의한 내구성 향상 및 염화물 이온 침투억제에 의한 철근의 발청 억제 등의 다양한 효과를 기대할 수 있다. 그러나, 재령 초기 낮은 압축강도로 인해 사용량이 적은 실정이다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 고로슬래그 미분말을 치환할 경우 낮은 압축강도를 보완하기 위해 증기양생이 초기 강도 발현에 미치는 영향을 평가하였고, 압축강도, SEM, EDS, XRD와의 관계를 분석하여 콘크리트의 압축강도 발현특성을 검토하였다. 그 결과 고로슬래그 미분말을 30% 치환한 콘크리트가 가장 우수하였으며, 이는 증기양생에 의해 고로슬래그 미분말의 피막을 파괴하여 ettringite 및 C-S-H겔 등의 수화물을 생성함으로 압축강도에 영향을 마친 것으로 판단된다.

Stellite 스크랩으로 부터 Co 미분말의 제조 (Production of Fine Cobalt Metal Powders from Stellite Scrap)

  • Stellite 스크랩을 용융 NaOH로 분해하고 이로부터 Co가분말을 제조하였다. NaOH에 의한 Stellite 스크랩의 완전분해는 $750~800^{\circ}C$에서 Stellite에 대한 NaOH의 중량비 약 2로 1시간 이내에 이루어졌다. 함Co화합물은 X-선분석과 시차열중량분석에 의해 $Co_2O_3{\dot}H_2O$로 판명되었다. 함Co화합물은 HCl로 용해하여 $CoCl_2$용액으로 만들고, 그리고 용액의 pH를 조절하여 먼저 Fedldhs을 제거한 후, pH 약 13 또는 4에서 각각 2가 EH는 3가의 수산화코발트로 침전시켰다. 이 침전물들은 $400~500^{\circ}C$에서 수소로 환원하여 1.0~$1.5\mu\textrm{m}$크기의 고순도 Co로 제조되었다. Stellite스크랩으로부터 Co 회수율은 약 75~86 중량 %이었다.

공공하수처리시설에서 수질오염물질 유입 및 배출 특성 고찰 - 산업폐수 및 매립지 침출수 연계처리 시설을 중심으로 - (A study on characteristics of influent and effluent pollutants in public sewage treatment works combined with industrial wastewater and landfill leachate)

  • In this study, we investigated influent and effluent water pollutants in 53 Public Sewage Treatment Works (PSTWs) where industrial wastewater or landfill leachate is combined four times for two years from 2014 to 2015. Also, we analyzed the characteristics of heavy metals and volatile organic carbons at influent and effluent of these PSTWs caused by sewage treatment combined with industrial wastewater or landfill leachate. As a result, six heavy metals such as barium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel and zinc, and four volatile organic carbons (VOCs) including phenols, di(2-)ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), formaldehyde and toluene were observed above detection limits in most of PSTWs. Also, it was revealed that six heavy metals such as hexavalent chromium, mercury, cadmium, chromium, nickel and selenium, and four VOCs including 1,1-dichloroethylene, vinyl chloride, naphthalene, and epichlorohydrin were observed more frequently according to precipitation. As a result of reviewing the monitoring data on "Water Quality Monitoring Networks" in lower watersheds of PSTWs, both heavy metals and VOCs were below detection limits, indicating that the effluent water had little influence on the watershed. Nevertheless for the better management of influent and effluent pollutants in PSTWs, it is necessary to establish the advanced management plans for water pollutants in PSTWs, which include a list of priority substances management, monitoring plans, and guidelines for industrial wastewater and landfill leachate combined in PSTWs.
