  • Titanium nitride and related overlayers produced by arc ion plating (AIP) are applied as commercial coatings in world-wide scale since the middle of 80s. Due to the achievements of low temperature deposition (LTD), they begin now to be used as wear and corrosion-resistant coatings for machine parts, besides applications on cemented carbide and high speed steel cutting tools. On the other side, TiN can be now applied successfully to brass, Al-alloy, ZnAl alloy articles as decorative coating through LTD. Various nitrides, carbonitrides, borides and other refractory compounds, such as (Ti, Al)N, TiCN, CrN, are used as the coatings for special heavy-duty working conditions instead of TiN since 90s. More and more multilayer coatings are applied now substituting single layer ones. Duplex processes are under development.

  • Electrical properties of electrochromic (EC) InN thin films prepared by rf ion plating were studied. There was a correlation between the electrical properties and the electrochromism in the InN films, particularly, carrier concentration changes were responsible for the electrical resistivity changes of the films due to the electrochromism. These carrier concentration changes were caused by chemisorbed hydroxyl groups and protons. From these results, it was proved that the carrier concentration changes of the InN films was responsible for the electrochromism in the visible and near-infrared region.

  • Arc ion plating (AIP), laser cladding, and nitriding are methods that can prevent mold damage or repair and create cracks and breakages on the die surface. The dissolution and soldering behavior of coated SKD61 by using arc ion plating, laser cladding, and nitriding was investigated. The structure of the coating was investigated as a function of deposition conditions by X-ray diffraction and the crystallographic orientation was determined using the texture factor. The TiAlN film deposited with AIP showed excellent corrosion resistance in the molten aluminum alloy at 680℃. In this paper, we have detailed the corrosion and mass loss phenomena associated with these steel-cast metal interactions.

  • DLC (diamond liked carbon) coating of the tungsten carbide (WC) alloy core surface for molding a glass aspheric lens improves the quality of glass lens and the molding core and is characterized by high hardness, high elasticity, abrasion resistance and chemical stability. In this study, the effect of DLC coating of a thin film by means of the filtered AIP (arc ion plating) technique was examined on Ra and shape of the coated surface. Roughness before and after DLC coating was measured and the result showed that the roughness was improved after coating as compared to before coating. It was observed that DLC coating of the WC alloy core surface for molding had an effect on improving the roughness and shape of the core surface. It is considered that this will have an effect on improving abrasion resistance and the service life of the core surface.

  • A Spotter ion Plating(SIP) system with a r. f. coil electrode and the Facing Target Sputter(FTS) source was designed for high-quality thin film formation. The rf discharge was combined with DC facing target sputtering in order to enhance ionization degree of a sputtered atoms. The discharge voltage-discharge characteristics curves of a FTS source could be characterized by the fern of $I{\propto}V^n$ with n in the range of $8{\sim}12$. The energy of ions incident on the substrate depended on the sheath potential of DC biased substrate. The mean impact ion energy increased with negative bias voltage and rf power. The adhesive force of the TiN film formed was in the range of $30{\sim}50N$, and markedly influenced by substrate bias voltage.

  • Wet plating has been initiated and developed as a major surface finishing technology as of the long customized and highly productive process until now. As the external compression by virtue of the environmental preservation becomes stricter, there has been new move to adapt dry plating line instead of conventional wet plating one in domestic surface finishing industry. Dry plating, so-called, plasma surface technology has been developed in semiconducting industry and becomes a key technology to be useful as an alternative to wet plating in surface finishing industry. The historical progress of domestic surface finishing industry was outlined with the background on the adaptation of three dry plating processes-plasma spraying, plasma nitriding and ion plating. The present status of domestic industrial activity was covered on major alternative to wet plating.

  • There are many plating methods already commercially employed in te surface technology. One of the plating methods is electroless (chemical) plating, which is deposited by auto-catalytic reduction of metallic ion with the reducing agent in the plating bath. And it has many advantages comparing with electrolytic plating in respect of properties of deposit, such as corrosion resistance, wear resistance, uniformity, hardness, adhesion and so on. So, electroless plating is the fatest growing process in metallization of plastic and electronic industry. The properties and numerous applications of electroless deposits are attracting more and more attention from finish specifies. Many metal finishers are considering set-up of new electroless line in their shops. This review will be beneficial to domestic metal finishers to understand the real status of present electroless plating technology. It will also provide some knowledge on the economic aspect of electroless plating for the commercial application of specific parts.

  • A NiW functional alloy plating was investigated as variables of metal ion concentration, complexing agent, temperature, pH and applied current density. Even if numerous studies on reaction mechanism of NiW induced codeposition were carried out during couples of decade, it has not been acceptable reaction mechanism. This study was focused on the effect of the plating variables on the alloy composition in the NiW alloy plating. Applied current density could control mainly the alloy composition rather than other plating variables. It has also been confirmed that the functional alloy plating such as layered or gradient plating was possible by controlling applied current density.

  • This paper deals with the effect of coating layer on the fatigue strength of TiN coated 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel prepared by using the arc ion plating (AIP) process, in which it was characterized by the presence of extractor grid (ion filter). The rotary bending fatigue tests were carried out under room air conditions, and the fatigue crack initiation and growth bwhavior were observed by using plastic replica method. As experimental results, it was found that the obvious improvement of fatigue life at lower stress region was confirmed in TiN coated specimen processed with ion filter. It was also exlained that the increase of fatigue life in the case of an improved AIP process with ion filter was attributed to the retardation of crack initiation of the substrate surface due to hard coating layer, more densly formed with the reduced size and density of droplets.

  • A research for the recovery of the metal with high purity from the waste tin plating solution was carried out. First, tin plating waste solution was tested to remove the organic substances and metallic impurities such as Fe, Zn, Na etc. using ion exchange resin having iminodiacetic functional groups (Lewatit TP 207). Second, the tin solution was purified to obtain the high purity tin solution using ion exchange resin having ethylhexyl-phosphate functional groups (Lewatit VPOC 1026). Finally, 99.98% of the high purity of tin metal can be recovered from the purified solution by cyclone type electrowinning method.
