Various performance variables differentiate this paper other existing studies employing a single performance variable. The business activity is divided into two categories, the underwriting activity and the investment activity. Each activity produces two performance, cost and profit performance. This study analyses the factors influencing four performance variables and suggests implications enforcing the life insurance companies' competitiveness based on the analysis. The results of this study are summarized as follows. Firstly, we find a statistically significant correlation between the cost performance in the under-writing activity and other performance variables. However, there in not a statistically significant correlation between the other three performance variables, the cost performance in the investment activity, the profit performance in the under-writing activity. Secondly, it is desirable to increase the selling of protection products for enforcing the competitiveness in respect of the cost performance. Finally, it is needed to increase the ratio of loans for enforcing the competitiveness in the area of the investment activity.

  • Recently, impact investment has attracted attention all over the world. This is intended to effectively solve problems by combining private capital and various financial techniques with social and environmental needs, as it is recognized that it is difficult to solve social and environmental problems. Impact investment means a mixture of financial, social, and environmental aspects. This refers to an investment focused on such a blended value, through which it simultaneously achieves financial and social values such as return on investment. The purpose of this study is to study whether impact investment, which has become a new issue, is actually applicable in Korea. This study first considers the concept and method of impact investment, and a prior study on social enterprises and impact investment that pursue social values. In particular, after analyzing in detail the social performance-related bonds (SIB) and operational cases, we intend to explore the possible applicability of impact investment to Korea. The results and implications of this study are, first, changes in the government's attitude toward impact finance. The government should entrust innovative public works to market-proven service providers to enhance the professionalism and efficiency of public service projects. Second, the legal system must innovate. Impact investment should provide an institutional foundation to pursue social problem solving simultaneously, not maximizing financial performance. Third, when investing in public works in the private sector, impact investment must clearly demand social performance and clarify the evaluation accordingly. The project execution process should create an impact environment that is more free and active.

  • This study examines the effect of R&D investment on firm performance and value of Chinese private firms. Through R&D investment, firms aim to acquire knowledge and technological resources to create innovation and competitive advantage, which ultimately enhances firm performance and value. However, unlike other investments, R&D investments are characterized by high adjustment costs and risks, uncertainty and asymmetric information. In addition, the effect of R&D investment on firm performance and value has been shown to be mixed results due to various internal and external contextual factors. Therefore, this study intends to consider how the ESG activities of firms, which have recently attracted attention, act as a contextual factor in the results of R&D investment. This is because interaction with stakeholders through ESG activities is considered to be an important factor in securing competitive advantages and sustainable growth. In this context, this study measures the effect of a firm's R&D investment on its business performance by dividing it into financial performance and value, respectively, and examines the moderating effect of ESG score on the relationship. Based on empirical analysis of all Chinese private firms from 2010 to 2019, the results show that a firm's R&D investment has a negative impact on performance and a positive impact on value. Furthermore, a high ESG score of private firms positively moderates each relationship, emphasizing the importance of ESG activities.

  • Under complete information, introducing additional constraints to a portfolio will have a negative impact on performance. However, real-life investments inevitably involve use of error-prone estimations, such as expected stock returns. In addition to the reality of incomplete data, investments of most Korean domestic equity funds are regulated externally by the government, as well as internally, resulting in limited maximum investment allocation to single stocks and risk free assets. This paper presents an investment framework, which takes such real-life situations into account, based on a newly developed portfolio selection model considering realistic constraints under incomplete information. Additionally, we examined the effects of additional constraints on portfolio's performance under incomplete information, taking the well-known Samsung and SK group stocks as performance benchmarks during the period beginning from the launch of each commercial fund, 2005 and 2007 respectively, up to 2013. The empirical study shows that an investment model, built under incomplete information with additional constraints, outperformed a model built without any constraints, and benchmarks, in terms of rate of return, standard deviation of returns, and Sharpe ratio.

  • Intensified competition, splintered mass market, shortened product life cycles, and advanced technology and automation let companies to crease the IT investment to meet the changes, Although IT investment increased, IS didn't show the visible outcome. One of the major interest of IS managers is how to demonstrate the business value of the firm's investment in information technology. This paper proposes the revised model of Nelson & Cooprider(1990) regarding shared knowledge between IS and line groups. Knowledge can be shared through mutual trust, mutual influence and communication between these two groups. The revised model including communication is tested empirically using LISREL. The results show that shared knowledge mediated the relationship between IS performance and mutual trust, mutual influence and communication. And shared knowledge between IS and line groups increase IS performance. IS managers should develop mutual trust, mutual influence and communication between these groups to achieve more shared knowledge and higher IS performance.
