Filament inversion routines are highly effective for target definition whenever total-field DHTEM vectors can be obtained using three-component logging tools. However most cross-hole components contain significant noise related to sensor design and errors in observation of probe rotation. Standard stacking methods can be used to improve data quality but additional statistical methods based on cross-correlation and spatial averaging of orthogonal components may be required to ensure a consistent vector migration path. Apart from assisting with spatial averaging, multiple filaments generated for successive time-windows can provide additional imaging information relating to target geometry and current migration. New digital receiver systems provide additional time-windows to provide better tracking options necessary for high-resolution imaging of this type.
It has been one of the puzzles in the English syntax that so called the rule of subject-auxiliary inversion (SAI) is not allowed in subject wh-movement while it is not obligatory in non-subject wh-movement in a root sentence. This asymmetry has been a puzzle since SAI itself was thought to be a part of question construction as we can observe from yes/no questions. The asymmetry gets more complicated in terms of sentence embedding, i.e no SAI is permitted in the embedded context in question. The goal of this paper is to suggest an unified analysis for this unsolved grammatical phenomena on the basis of Rizzi (1997)'s recent work. The main idea is that SAI is not a I-to-C movement but one of I-to-Focus where Focus is a functional category and its phrase is located between CP and IP. The other proposal is that Wh-movement is no more homogeneous in terms of landing site between a root and an embedded sentence: the target for a wh-phrase in the former is the Spec of FocP (Focus Phrase) but the one in the latter is the Spec of CP as the standard theory assumes. Pesetsky (l999)'s analysis is discussed and its theoretical and empirical shortages are pointed out. Its rather radical proposals such as the one that the nominative case is just an uninterpretable tense feature of DP and the other that 'that' is no longer a complementizer but an element of I(nflection) make it less acceptable in spite of the possibility that it can get rid of Case theory entirely, which would be ideal in the spirit of minimalism.
In this study, we propose a joint inversion method, using genetic algorithms, to estimate an S-wave velocity structure for deep sedimentary layers from receiver functions and surface-wave phase velocity observed at several sites. The method takes layer continuity over a target area into consideration by assuming that each layer has uniform physical properties, especially an S-wave velocity, at all the sites in a target area in order to invert datasets acquired at different sites simultaneously. Numerical experiments with synthetic data indicate that the proposed method is effective in reducing uncertainty in deep structure parameters when modelling only surface-wave dispersion data over a limited period range. We then apply the method to receiver functions derived from earthquake records at one site and two datasets of Rayleigh-wave phase velocity obtained from microtremor array surveys performed in central Tokyo, Japan. The estimated subsurface structure is in good agreement with the results of previous seismic refraction surveys and deep borehole data. We also conclude that the proposed method can provide a more accurate and reliable model than individual inversions of either receiver function data only or surface-wave dispersion data only.

Small unmanned platforms maneuvering underwater are the key naval future forces, utilized as the asymmetric power in war. As a method of detecting and identifying such platforms, we introduce a property estimation technique based on an iterative numerical analysis. The property estimation technique can estimate not only the position of a target but also its physical properties. Moreover, it will have a potential in detecting and classifying still target or multiple targets. In this study, we have conducted the property estimation of an small underwater target using the data acquired from the lake experiment. As a result, it shows that the properties of a small platform may be roughly estimated from the in site data even using one channel.

In this work, the morphology of polyvinylidene-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-co-HFP) membranes were systemically investigated using phase inversion technique, to target membrane contactor applications. As the presence of macrovoids degrade the mechanical integrity of the membranes and jeopardize the long-term stability of membrane contactor processes (e.g. wetting), a wide range of dope compositions and casting conditions was studied to eliminate the undesired macrovoids. The type of solvent had significant effect on the membrane morphology, and the observed morphology were correlated to the physical properties of the solvent and solvent-polymer interactions. In addition, to fabricate macrovoid-free structure, the effects of different coagulation temperatures, inclusion of additives, and addition of nonsolvents were investigated. Due to the slow crystallization rate of P(VDF-co-HFP) polymer, it was found that obtaining porous membrane without macrovoids is difficult using only nonsolvent-induced phase separation method (NIPS). However, combined other phase inversion methods such as evaporation-induced phase separation (EIPS) and vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS), the desired membrane morphology can be obtained without any macrovoids.

Objective : The exact position of the lesion during the pallidotomy is critical to obtain the clinical improvement of parkinson's disease without damage to surrounding structure. Ventriculogrphy, CT(computed tomograpy) or MRI(magnetic resonance imaging) have been used to determine the initial coordinates of stereotactic target for pallidotomy. The goal of this study was to determine whether microelectrode recording significantly improves the neurophysiologic localization of the target obtained from MRI. Methods : Twenty patients were studied. They underwent a unilateral pallidotomy. Leksell frame was applied and T1 axial images parallel to the AC-PC(anterior commissure-posterior commissure) plane using a 1.5 Tesla MRI with 3mm slice thickness were obtained. Anteroposterior coordinate of target was chosen at 2mm in front of the midcommissural point and lateral coordinate between 19 and 22mm from the midline. The vertical coordinate was calculated on coronal slice using a fast spin echo inversion recovery sequence(FSEIR) related to the position of the choroidal fissure and ranged over 4-5mm below the AC-PC plane. Confirmation of the anatomical target was done on axial slices using the same FSEIR sequence . Microrecording was done at the pallidum contralateral to the symptomatic side using an electrode with a tip diameter of $1{{\mu}m}$ diameter tip and 1.1-1.4 mOhm impedance at 1000Hz. Electrophysiologic localization of the target was also confirmed intraoperatively by macrostimulation. Results : Microrecording techniques were reliable to define the transition from the base of the pallidum which was characterized by the disappearance of spike activity and by the change of the audible background activity. Signals from high amplitude neurons firing at 200-400Hz were recorded in the pallidal base. X, Y and Z coordinates of target obtained from the MRI were within 1mm from the X, Y, Z coordinates obtained with microrecording in 16 patients (80%), 15 patients(75%), 10 patients(50%) respectively. The difference of Y coordinate between on MRI and on microrecording was 4mm in only one patient. Conclusion : The MRI was accurate to localize the target within 1mm of the error from microrecording target in 70% of the patients. 4mm discrepancy was observed only once. We conclude that MRI alone can be used to determine the target for pallidotomy in most patients. However, microrecording technique can still be extremely valuable in patents with aberrant anatomy or unusual MRI coordinates. We also consider physiologic confirmation of the target using macrostimulation to be mandatory in all cases.
The classical image reconstruction for stripmap SAR is the range-Doppler imaging. However, when the spotlight SAR system was envisioned, range-Bowler imaging fumed out to fail rapidly in this SAR imaging modality. What is referred to as polar format processing, which is based on the plane wave approximation, was introduced for imaging from spotlight SAR data. This paper has been studied for the raw data processing schemes in the spotlight-mode synthetic aperture radar. we apply the wavefront reconstruction scheme that does not utilize the approximation in spotlight-mode SAR imaging modelity, and compare the performance of target imaging with the polar format inversion scheme.

Recently, Ryu et al. proposed a multiple target angle tracking algorithm using the angular innovation extracted from the estimated signal subspace. This algorithm obtains the angles of targets and associates data simultaneously. Therefore, it has a simple structure without data association problem. However it requires the calculation of the inverse of a real matrix with dimension (2N+1)${\times}$(2N+1) to obtain the angular innovations of N targets. In this paper, a new linear equation for angular innovation is proposed using the fact that the projection error is zero when the target steering vector is projected onto the signal subspace. As a result, the proposed algorithm dose not require the matrix inversion and is computationally efficient.

It is obvious that understanding the effects of shallow water environment of Korea is very important to guarantee the optimal performance of active sonar such as monostatic and bistatic sonar. For this reason, in this paper, we analyzed the detection performance characteristics for various depth deployments of sonar in summer, winter and water temperature inversion environments, which environments are frequently observed in shallow water of Korea such as the Yellow sea. To analyze only effects of water temperature structures on target detection performance, we applied range independent conditions for bottom, sea surface and water temperature characteristics. To understand the characteristics of detection performance, we conducted transmission loss and signal excess modeling. From the results, we were able to confirm the characteristics of detection performance of active sonar. In addition, we verified that operation depth of transmitter and receiver affects the detection performance. Especially in the water temperature inversion environment, it was confirmed that the shadow zone could be minimized and the detection range could be increased through bistatic operation.
