A Two-Stage Heuristic for Disassembly Scheduling with Capacity Constraints

  • Disassembly scheduling is the problem of determining the quantity and timing of disassembling used or end-of-life products while satisfying the demand of their parts and/or components over a planning horizon. The case of assembly product structure is considered while the resource capacity constraints are explicitly considered. A cost-based objective is considered that minimizes the sum of disassembly operation and inventory holding costs. The problem is formulated as an integer programming model, and a two-stage heuristic with construction and improvement algorithms is suggested in this paper. To test the performance of the heuristic, computational experiments are done on randomly generated problems, and the results show that the heuristic gives near optimal solutions within a very short amount of computation time.

  • This paper is a study for the computerization program of incoming and outgoing processes of a number of parts and a great amount of material for producing products in flood industry, which was required by a medium-sized company located at Cheon-An. The program consists of four databases, one main form, seventeen subforms, and eight report forms. Concretely speaking, the four databases are prepared for products, semi-products, material, and reports, and the seventeen subforms are those for current inventory, used quantity, safty stock, product specification, etc. With the program, users can be helped and save manpower, time and cost in incoming and outgoing processes of parts and material for producing products and in their real time operation and decision-making.

  • Disassembly scheduling is the problem of determining the ordering and disassembly schedules of used products while satisfying the demand of their parts of components over a certain planning horizon. The objective is to minimize the sum of purchase, setup, disassembly operation and inventory holding costs. This paper considers products with assembly structure, i.e. products without parts commonality, and suggests a heuristic in which an initial solution is obtained in the form of the minimal latest disassembly schedule, and then improved considering trade-offs among different cost factors. To show the performance of the heuristic suggested in this paper, computational experiments were done on the modified existing examples and the results show that the heuristic can give optimal of very near optimal solutions within very short computation times.

Financial Structural and Operational Characteristics and Management Decision-making Behavior of the Red-figured Hospitals (적자병원의 재무구조 및 운영적 특성과 경영의사결정 행태)

  • Financial ratio indicators of the 46 sample hospitals provided by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, together with the survey data responded by the 57 sample hospitals, were analysed to identify the characteristics of the red-figured hospitals' financial structure, financial operational efficiency and management decision-making behavior, The financial characteristics identified through the analysis include high dependency to liabilities, high salary expenses and overhead costs, low profitability of the unduly large amount of fixed assets, and low managerial efficieny of inventory. The hospitals, in face of the IMF economic impasse, took the necessary decision-making and counter measures to cut down salary expenses, to increase the number of patient and medical revenue, and to reduce investment to fixed assets. Based on these findings this study suggested that the hospitals should take more active cost containment measures, financial structural reorganization, and developoment of the strategies that can contribute to increase of the number of patient and medical revenue and that do not. require much capital funds.

  • A distribution system is composed of multiple levels from a producer to customers, and it's objective is to supply customers with goods timely with a prescribed level of quality at a minimum cost. For the installation and operation of multi-echelon distribution system, DRP(Distribution Resource Planning) is widely used. However, because of the characteristic difference of material flow dynamic of each distribution center, it is almost impossible to get the optimal distribution scheduling. In this paper, an improved DRP method to schedule multi-echelon distribution network is proposed so that the lot-size and order point is dynamically obtained to meet the change of demand rate and timing. The experiment is done with various demand pattern, forecast errors of demand and lead times of central distribution center. The proposed method is compared with traditional statistical approach.

Development of paint area estimation software for ship compartments and structures

  • The painting process of large ships is an intense manual operation that typically comprises 9-12% of the total shipbuilding cost. Accordingly, shipbuilders need to estimate the required amount of anti-corrosive coatings and painting resources for inventory and cost control. This study aims to develop a software system which enables the shipbuilders to estimate paint area using existing 3D CAD ship structural models. The geometric information of the ships structure are extracted from the existing shipbuilding CAD/CAM system and used to create painting zones. After specifying the painting zones, users can generate the paint faces by clipping structural parts inside each zone. Finally, the paint resources may be obtained from the product of the paint areas and required paint thickness. Implementing the developed software system to real shipbuilders' operations has contributed to improved productivity, faster resource estimation, better accuracy, and fewer coating defects over their conventional manual calculation methods for painting resource estimation.

Analysis of Cost and Efficiency of a Medical Nursing Unit Using Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing (시간-동인활동기준원가계산(Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing)을 이용한 일 내과병동 간호단위 원가계산 및 효율성 분석)

  • Purpose: Time-driven activity-based costing was applied to analyze the nursing activity cost and efficiency of a medical unit. Methods: Data were collected at a medical unit of a general hospital. Nursing activities were measured using a nursing activities inventory and classified as 6 domains using Easley-Storfjell Instrument. Descriptive statistics were used to identify general characteristics of the unit, nursing activities and activity time, and stochastic frontier model was adopted to estimate true activity time. Results: The average efficiency of the medical unit using theoretical resource capacity was 77%, however the efficiency using practical resource capacity was 96%. According to these results, the portion of non-added value time was estimated 23% and 4% each. The sums of total nursing activity costs were estimated 109,860,977 won in traditional activity-based costing and 84,427,126 won in time-driven activity-based costing. The difference in the two cost calculating methods was 25,433,851 won. Conclusion: These results indicate that the time-driven activity-based costing provides useful and more realistic information about the efficiency of unit operation compared to traditional activity-based costing. So time-driven activity-based costing is recommended as a performance evaluation framework for nursing departments based on cost management.

Development of Head-cook's Education and Training Curriculum by Analyzing Job Characteristics and Competencies in Contract Foodservice Management Company

  • The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the job characteristics and competencies of a head-cook in contracted foodservice management company, identify the knowledge, abilities, skills and other characteristics (KASO) required to perform the duties of a head-cook, and provide training content and develop training program for job of head-cook in contract foodservice management company (CFMC). A survey instrument including identified KASO was used in the study. The questionnaire was delivered by using e-mail to 165 head-cooks employed by CFMC. The factor analysis resulted in a three-factor structure of the instrument such as 'basic foodservice operation duties' 'personal characteristics' 'managing of expanded duties-menu, customer and business'. This result suggested the education and training program for head-cook in CFMC should be composed of 'basic foodservice operation duties' on 'bulk preparation', 'procurement, inventory management', 'facility and equipment management', and 'sanitation and safety management', 'personal characteristics' on 'personality management' and 'moral duties', and 'managing of expanded duties-menu, customer and business' on 'menu management', 'customer service management', 'cost management', and 'administrative ability'. Therefore, it will be expected that the management of human resources in the contract foodservice industry would be developed by the application of recommended education and training program.

A Design of Integrated Management System for Manufacturing Company with Multiple Production Strategies (다양한 생산전략을 가지는 제조업체의 통합 경영관리시스템 설계)

  • This study presents a design of integrated management system for manufacturing company for the purpose of reducing operation cost and speeding up flow of processes. Since common commercial management package should be well customized to reflect inherent processes of each company with great deal of effort, this study chooses a manufacturing company that produces component parts of automobile as a target company and designs management system specified for that target company. System design focuses on the minimization of the indirect cost of manufacturing reflected on the manufacturing cost price for each functional modules consisting of entire system through adding a mechanism to reduce unnecessary occurrence of process transactions. In addition, this paper considers connectivity among the functional modules so that manufacturing situations can be influenced on the system to be implemented and includes the system design with monitoring modules and data flow between functional modules.

Evaluating Appropriateness of Medication Use in the Operating Rooms of a Tertiary Hospital: Based on Survey (일개 병원의 수술실 약제관련 업무 적정화 방안연구: 설문조사를 중심으로)

  • Background: Since the use of opioid analgesics is frequent in operation rooms (OR), the risk of medication error is high; however the use of medication in the OR has been operating independently with the hospital pharmacy. Therefore, the assessment on management of medication use in operation and the pharmacist's role is needed. Methods: We conducted the literature review and survey from anesthesiologists, operating nurses at Chung-Ang Hospital on management of medication for operation use, awareness on need for medication management efficiency, need for satellite pharmacy in the operating room and its effect. Results: 56% of medical staffs responded that management of medication in the operating room is efficient; however, 82.6% responded that they felt the inconvenience in medication delivery to the OR when additional prescription was ordered. 51.5% also responded that extra time was required for management of narcotics and inventory/record keeping. 80% agreed that there could be lost costs due to prescription missed. Medical staffs responded improving the drug management system could increase the OR efficiency (87%), and eventually bring the increase in hospital revenue (80.4%). Those who responded that implementation of OR satellite pharmacy was needed include physicians (84.6%), nurses (63.6%), and also responded that it'd bring more profit to the hospital by increasing the efficiency in OR (60.9%). Conclusion: For efficient management of medications, implementation of OR satellite pharmacy would lead to improved drug management and increased efficiency in OR and reduced cost and improved patient care.
