  • The seasonal changes and composition of phytoplankton of the Choonsan reservior were studied from November 1990 to October 1991. 195 taxa which belong to 65 genera, 150 species, 40 varieties and 1 forms were identified. Species number during summer monthes was higher than that of other seasons. Standing crops of phytoplankton were varied from $7.8\times10^5$ cells/l to $2.2\timesl0^6$ cells/$\ell$. The dominant species were Cryptomonas erose and Trachelomonas volvoina. Chlorophyll a contents of phytoplankton was varied from $1.36\mu\textrm{g}/\ell$ to $127.46\mu\textrm{g}/\ell$. The biotic indices of phytoplankton were very similar among three sites. Saprobien-system by index of species diversity suggests that the Choonsan reservior belongs to the oligosaprophic.

  • Poor subsistence farmers who live in a semi-arid area of northern Ethiopia build irrigation systems to overcome water shortages. However, there is a high risk of malaria transmission when increased standing water provides more favorable habitats for mosquito breeding. This is a serious problem because there are many barriers to malaria control measures and health care systems in the area. Using a causal loop diagram and computer simulations, the author attempted to visually illustrate positive and negative feedbacks between mosquito and human populations in the context of Simret, which is a small village located in northern Ethiopia and is generally considered a malaria-free area. The simulation results show that the number of infectious mosquitos increases to 17,215 at its peak, accounting for 3.5% of potentially dangerous mosquitos. At the same time, the number of sick people increases to 574 at its peak, accounting for 15% of local population. The malaria outbreak is controlled largely because of a fixed number of vulnerable people or local population that acts as an intermediate host.

  • The creation of S&T knowledge and development of S&T- based innovation has spread worldwide from traditionally advanced countries to traditionally developing countries, often under the direction of governments. Korea is an exemplar in this new locus. Korea's burst in Science and Technology during the last three decades has made Korea a substantive player in the global production of S&T knowledge and its application to business. Although Korea still trails the US and other top countries in the quality of research, it has leaped from its 1980s standing as bit player in the knowledge economy to being among the leaders in the early 21st Century. This paper shows that Korea's advance benefited from its active participation in the global market in higher education, in international research collaborations, and its close ties to the U.S. Korea's experience offers lessons for other countries who seek to advance by becoming knowledge economies. Korea proves that a developing country can gain comparative advantage in knowledge production and use; that government policy can stimulate such a development; and that openness to the world of higher education and research is the best way to move forward and overcome the middle income trap.

  • Recently, an interest in the use of renewable energy has been growing up due to the rise of raw material price, international oil price and depletion of fossil energy. Ground source heat pump system has a high efficiency by using the constant temperature of underground and various types of the systems have been installed and utilized in the building. there are few studies on the system performance factors in the SCW system. Furthermore, even though the performance of the system depends on the temperature of heat source, the research on their relationship is rare. In this research, in order to analyze the performance factor for the open-loop system the monitoring of the real building with the standing column well systems and the simulation with building model were conducted.

  • Compared with the earlier technique of dual photon absorptiometry (DPA) using $^{153}Gd$ radionuclide source, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has advantages of higher precision, accuracy and shorter scanning time. Despite the change from DPA to DPX, the nuclear medicine physicians has remained one of major suplier of this service due to long-standing use of DPA. Among many kinds of bone densitometries, DXA is the "gold standard" for the noninvasive diagnosis of osteoporosis. Especially there is no role for peripheral devices in the monitoring of patients on therapy. But, there are some areas of controversy related to the application of DXA, such as proper site of measurement, accurate interpritation, appropriate use of T-score, and the reference population young database. And the accuracy, precision, and quality control issues relating to bone density measurement are important subjects. To address these issues, the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) has convened two Position Development Conferences and addressed official positions. This review deals the key elements of ISCD position paper and other important issues on the management of bone densitometry.

  • This paper presents the control of an inverted pendulum system using intelligent algorithms, such as fuzzy logic and neural networks, for advanced control education. The swing up balancing control of the inverted pendulum system was performed using fuzzy logic. Because the switching time from swing to standing motion is important for successful balancing, the fuzzy control method was employed to regulate the energy associated with the angular velocity required for the pendulum to be in an upright position. When the inverted pendulum arrived within a range of angles found experimentally, the control was switched from fuzzy to proportional-integral-derivative control to balance the inverted pendulum. When the pendulum was balancing, a joystick was used to command the desired position for the pendulum to follow. Experimental results demonstrated the performance of the two intelligent control methods.

  • This article discusses the deadlock in the WTO on multilateral harmonization of nonpreferential rules of origin (RoO) and reviews some of the RoO included in recent preferential trade agreements. We argue that there is a trend towards adoption of similar approaches and that this suggests that cooperation to reduce the trade-impeding effects of differences in RoO across jurisdictions is more feasible than often is assumed by observers and policymakers. From a trade facilitation perspective such cooperation could be based on plurilateral initiatives under the umbrella of the WTO. These could include a focus on pursuit of greater convergence between preferential and nonpreferential RoO helping to achieve the long-standing goal of moving towards harmonization of rules of origin.

  • This article takes Disney animation as the research object to analyze the Chinese and American culture in the animation. The first part introduces the background of the animation. The theme of the animation comes from the long-standing narrative folk song Mulan Ci during the Southern and Northern Dynasties of China, and it introduces the parallel montage of animation narrative. The second part narrates the Chinese cultural elements in Mulan, and expounds on Disney's use and blending of Chinese cultural elements from three aspects of ink painting effect, national costumes and Confucianism. From the perspective of Western culture, the third part analyzes how to integrate Western thought and characteristics, and contrast with Chinese culture in Mulan from three aspects: Mushu, character and hierarchy.

  • Analysis of construction tender documents in overseas projects is a very important issue from a risk management point of view. Unfortunately, majority of construction firms are biased by winning contracts without in-depth analysis of tender documents. As a result, many contractors have incurred loss in overseas projects. Although a lot of risk analysis techniques have been introduced, most of them focus project's external unexpected risks such as country conditions and owner's financial standing. However, because those external risks are difficult to control and take preemptive action, we need to concentrate on project inherent risks. Based on this premise, this paper proposes a project-oriented risk mining approach which could detect and extract project risk factors automatically before they are materialized and assess them. This study presents a methodology regarding how to extract potential risks which exist in owner's project requirements and project tender documents using state of the art data analysis method such as text mining, data mining, and information visualization. The project-oriented risk mining approach is expected to effectively reflect project characteristics to the project risk management and could provide construction firms with valuable business intelligence.

  • The official development assistance (ODA) accompanies an interstate financial transaction, such as trade, foreign direct investment, and money transfer. ODA policy has designated several purposes. Among them, political purposes have been considered to be the key factors in the regional distribution of foreign aid. If we agree the traditional approach that recognizes ODA as a 'political one', the practice of ODA can be a kind of state geopolitics. This study investigates the construction and characteristics of geopolitical discourses. More specifically, this study pays special attention to the 'practical geopolitics' that is crucial to the policy-making. By analyzing the minutes of the National Assembly Standing Committee, four geopolitical discourses were identified: 'practicing humanities as a developed country', 'providing a role model to developing countries', 'developing new foreign markets' and 'coping with global geopolitics'. These geopolitical discourses have been constructed through the process of justifying the ODA policy to the domestic and international audiences. Constructing discourses on ODA shows the representation of a dichotomous and typical image of developed/developing.
