An internal wave observation experiment by SAR in South China Sea is described. Two scenes of Radarsat ScanSAR images were acquired. Internal solitary waves are found in all the two images. It is concluded that these internal waves are generated in Bashi channel. Relationship between internal wave generation and tide is studied based on analyzing of tidal data of Legaspi in Philippine. Using ocean environmental data of this sea area internal waves’ amplitude and wave speed are detected by SAR images.
Internal wave with a soliton-like, large amplitudes within several kilometers, is frequently observed in the sea surface caused by tidal rectification due to sill or rough topographic changes. Internal waves can perturb current and density field, initiate bottom sediment re -suspension and mix nutrients to photic zone. Previous studies indicate that the appearance of internal wave in the Lombok Strait have been detected in SAR image data. This paper studies effect of internal wave in the Lombok Strait to chlorophyll distribution in the surrounded areas using SeaWiFS and ERS SAR images data during 1996-2001 periods. The preliminary result concludes that the internal waves presumably affect phytoplankton distribution spreading southeastward in the coast off Bali Island. The distribution of phytoplankton at southern coastline off Bali Island when internal wave occurred is elongated and distributed further to westward (from 8.8$^{\circ}$ to 10.7$^{\circ}$LS) than the area when internal wave did not occur on August 2000 (from 9.25$^{\circ}$ to 10.25$^{\circ}$LS) as shown in figure 3. It shown that the surface phytoplankton concentration near coastal area, i.e. from 8.8$^{\circ}$ to 9.25$^{\circ}$ LS, increased when internal wave is occurred.

The 3-D modeling of ocean finite element method(OFEM) using $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model and tetrahedron grids has been used to investigate the internal wave generation during the expansion of the deep water from the open sea to the shelf with a simple shape, which can be widely used in the fields of submarine development, ocean environment and meteorology, etc. In this paper, the detailed configuration of internal wave with its length and height and also the distribution of salinity and turbulent kinematic energy, etc. were derived. It is hoped that this OFEM method can be successfully applied to the numerical calculation of internal wave for and the oceanographic problems (tidal flows around underwater hill, plateau, Georges Bank, etc.) and ocean engineering problems(flow past artificial sea reefs) in future.

The satellite image acquired by RADARSAT SAR on August 15, 1996 reveals internal waves in north coastal waters of Cheju Island. It is indicated from the image data, the tidal elevation data, and the bottom topography data, the internal waves seem to be generated by interaction between shallow bottom and tidal currents travelling in the stratified water in the summer time during the tidal changeovers from ebb to flood. The internal waves generated in such condition show patterns of trains of solitons. Probable amplitude of observed solitons is calculated using estimation of the soliton wave length from SAR image data and K-dV equation. Detection of the internal waves is very significant not only to military strategist for underwater maneuvers such as operation of submarines, but also to physical and biological oceanographers. Temporal and spatial variation of the internal waves are needed to be measured by simultaneous in-situ field study together with SAR to examine the nature of these internal waves.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to confirm that the pulse analyzer is useful for analyzing characteristics of variables of pulse waves in age categories, evaluating pulse waves of the metabolic syndrome group, compared with those of the non-metabolic syndrome group in Korean adults. Methods : The pulse wave variables were measured in Guan of all 1,056 subjects by the pulse analyzer, using a pen-type piezoresistive sensor. The physical measurement, blood test and survey were also performed by each subject. Results : In the age categories, height of pre-incisura (h2), height of tidal wave (h3), area of percussion wave (Aw), and width of percussion wave (w) increased in accordance with increase in age. While ratio of systolic period area (As) went up according to the increase of age, ratio of diastolic period area (Ad) went down. Radial augmentation index (R-AI), h2/h1, h3/h1, w/t and angle of percussion wave went up by aging, generally. Aw rate (Aw/At) also increased. Among the metabolic syndrome group, in the ages of 19 and 44, ratio of systolic period area (As) was higher and ratio of diastolic period area (Ad) was lower than in the non-metabolic group. w/t, Aw/At, and angle of percussion wave were higher than in the non-metabolic syndrome group. Among the metabolic syndrome group over the age of 60, height of pre-incisura (h2), height of tidal wave (h3), total area (At), area of percussion wave (Aw), radial augmentation index (R-AI), h2/h1 and h3/h1 were higher than in the non-metabolic syndrome group. Conclusions : The pulse analyzer is useful to analyze arterial stiffness in the age categories and in the metabolic syndrome group by some measures.

A numerical study of a two-layer, stratified flow is investigated, using the implicit finite difference method in one dimension. The results of computational method have been tested and, in case of lock exchange flow, compared with the results of experimental data. The results of model experiments with various interfacial, bottom friction coefficients along with various time weighting factor of numerical scheme and dissipative interface are shown and discussed. Two-layer model experiment has been also carried out to investigate the generation and propagation characteristics of internal tidal wave over the steep bottom topography under stratified condition. The internal wave seems to well radiate through the downstream boundary under the experiments adopting radiation conditions both at two layers and only at upper layer, confirming the applicability of radiational boundary condition in stratified flows. It is also shown that the internal wave through the downstream boundary propagates more actively with increasing thickness of lower layer in the downstream. This implies that the potential tidal energy in the interface will depend upon the thickness of lower layer for the constant thickness of upper layer.

Acoustic backscatter profiles were measured by Eco-sounder along an east-west section in the mid-eastern Yellow Sea and at an anchoring station in the low salinity region off the Keum River estuary in September 2012, with observing physical water property structure by CTD. Tidal front was established around the sand ridge developed in 50 m depth region. Internal waves measured by Eco-sounder during low tide period in the eastern side of the sand ridge were nonlinear depression waves with wave height of 15 m and mean wavelength of 500 m. These waves were interpreted into tidal internal waves that were produced by tidal current flowing over the sand ridge to the southeast. When weakly non-linear soliton model was applied, propagation speed and period of these internal depression wave were 50 m/s and 16~18 min. Red tides by Dinoflagelates Cochlodinium were observed in the sea surface where strong acoustic scattering layer was raised up to 7 m. Hourly CTD profiles taken at the anchoring station off the Keum River estuary showed the halocline depth change by tidal current and land-sea breeze. When tidal current flowed strongly to the northeast during flood period and land-breeze of 7 m/s blew to the west, the halocline was temporally raised up as much as 2 m and acoustic profile images showed a complex structure in the surface layer within 5-m depth: in tens of seconds the declined acoustic structure of strong and weak scattering signals alternatively appeared with entrainment and intrusion shape. These acoustic profile structures in the surface mixed layer were observed for the first time in the coastal sea of the mid-eastern Yellow Sea. The acoustic profile images and turbidity data suggest that relatively transparent low-layer water be intruded or entrained into the turbid upper-layer water by vertical shear between flood current and land breeze-induced surface current.
Several physical phenomena on the sea surface are analyzed from SAR images of South Sea areas, Korea. Strong wave patterns propagating in southerly direction are seen in ERS-1 SAR image on October 11, 1994, and a wave directional spectrum is calculated from this image using the SAR modulation transfer function. RADARSAT SAR image of August 15, 1996 reveals internal waves in northern coastal waters of Cheju Island. Analysis indicates that the internal waves may have been generated by the tidal currents traveling over the shallow bottom of the stratified water in the summer during the tidal changeovers fro ebb to flood and shows patterns of trains of solitons. RADARSAT SAR image taken 3 days after the oil spill accident near Goeje Isalnd on April 3, 1997 detects distinct oil slicks from the accident area but also shows slicks near the coast caused by wind sheltering of coastal mountains and chemical-biological activities.
Tidal sand ridges and sand waves are well developed in the Yellow Sea off Tae-An Peninsula, Korea. Their transport directions were inferred based on high resolution seismic profiles, surficial sediment characteristics and tidal regime. Tidal sand ridges are asymmetric, with long axes parallel to or slightly oblique to the dominant NE-SW tidal current direction. They show steep south and/or southeast flanks, which are in concordance with the apparent direction of internal cross-bedding in the south. Holocene sediments occur in accordance with distributional patterns of tidal sand ridges. These features indicate that Holocene active tidal sand ridges move toward the open sea in southeast, south and southwest direction. Sand waves which are distributed in flat sea floor with depth of about 40-60m show also asymmetric forms with a steep east-to-northeast face. Surficial sediments in the sand wave field are characterized by well sorted fine sands compared with poorly sorted adjacent areas. The sand waves appear to undergo easterly or northeasterly landward movement.

CTD measurements were conducted in the Nakdong estuary on the several sections or along-plume and cross-plume directions in 1993 and 1994. Internal Froude number Fi=0.22-0.35 in ebb tides and 0.14 in flood tides suggest that Nakdong river plume may go farther seawards in the along-plume direction with little mixing with the adjacent sea water after the construction of Nakdong river barrier. From Dadae-Po to Gaduk-Do section of cross-plume direction, three cores of low salinity were found. The main plume outflows from the newly made channel by cutting Ulsuk-Do after the construction of barrier. The low salinity core found near Gaduk-Do is the plume patch advected by tidal currents. Rossby deformation radius varied with the tidal cycle so that Coriolis effect is strengthened in flood tides to deepen the isohalines westwards to the Gaduk-Do site. Internal wavelike shape was found in the section of cross-plume direction during ebb tides. Richardson number of the section suggests the possibility of forming internal wave but more precise observations are necessary.
