Objectives: Gilgyung-tang (GGT) has been used as one of the main multi-herb formulas to treat “Peo-ong” (lung abscess). In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effects of water extracts of GGT on cell migration and invasion, two critical cellular processes that are often deregulated during metastasis, in human bladder cancer 5637 cells. Methods: Effects on cell viability were quantified using an MTT assay. To analyze the anti-metastatic effects, we conducted a wound healing migration assay, an in vitro invasiveness assay, and a measurement of the transepithelial electrical resistance (TER). The expression of protein and mRNA were measured by Western blotting and real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), respectively. Results: GGT markedly inhibited the cell motility and invasiveness of 5637 cells within the concentration range that was not cytotoxic. The inhibitory effects of GGT on cell invasiveness were associated with tightening of the tight junctions (TJs), which was demonstrated by an increase in the TER. The RT-PCR and Western blotting results indicated that GGT decreased the levels of claudin proteins. GGT also inhibited the activity and expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 and simultaneously increased the levels of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 and -2.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that GGT reduces both the migration and the invasion of 5637 cells by modulating the activity of TJs and MMPs.

Retinols are metabolized into retinoic acids by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and retinaldehyde dehydrogenase (Raldh). However, their roles have yet to be clarified in hepatitis despite enriched retinols in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Therefore, we investigated the effects of retinols on Concanavalin A (Con A)-mediated hepatitis. Con A was injected into wild type (WT), Raldh1 knockout ($Raldh1^{-/-}$), $CCL2^{-/-}$ and $CCR2^{-/-}$ mice. For migration study of regulatory T cells (Tregs), we used in vivo and ex vivo adoptive transfer systems. Blockade of retinol metabolism in mice given 4-methylpyrazole, an inhibitor of ADH, and ablated Raldh1 gene manifested increased migration of Tregs, eventually protected against Con A-mediated hepatitis by decreasing interferon-${\gamma}$ in T cells. Moreover, interferon-${\gamma}$ treatment increased the expression of ADH3 and Raldh1, but it suppressed that of CCL2 and IL-6 in HSCs. However, the expression of CCL2 and IL-6 was inversely increased upon the pharmacologic or genetic ablation of ADH3 and Raldh1 in HSCs. Indeed, IL-6 treatment increased CCR2 expression of Tregs. In migration assay, ablated CCR2 in Tregs showed reduced migration to HSCs. In adoptive transfer of Tregs in vivo and ex vivo, Raldh1-deficient mice showed more increased migration of Tregs than WT mice. Furthermore, inhibited retinol metabolism increased survival rate (75%) compared with that of the controls (25%) in Con A-induced hepatitis. These results suggest that blockade of retinol metabolism protects against acute liver injury by increased Treg migration, and it may represent a novel therapeutic strategy to control T cell-mediated acute hepatitis.

Seoul Metropolitan Area has been changed by fierce internal migration during the last several decades. To determine the regional structure, we analyzed the in-and-out migration pattern and main factors affecting the intense of mobility. The migration within metropolitan city and province shows that in Seoul, Songpa and Dobong Gu gained a large population, in Incheon, Namdong Gu experienced a huge population influx, and in Gyeonggi Province, Hwasung, Yongin and Paju city gained a great population. In Seongnam, Suwon city lost a lot of population. These population gains and losses came from mainly residential redevelopment projects in the metropolitan city and new land development projects in Gyeonggi Province. The main factors affecting the intense of mobility diverse from city characters. In central type cities, house price gets the more population influx. In job-housing balanced cities, total income growth rate, housing supply rate and roads cause in-migration. In bed-town type cities, the increase of housing supply rate and parks increase the population. In suburban type cities, business density, housing supply rate, housing, subway station number and educational facilities increase population from outside the city. So, we have to prepare more detailed urban and housing policy responses.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the antineoplastic effect of several herbal medicine mixtures (compositions of Astragalus membranaceu, Angelica gigas, Trichosanthes kirilowii, Panax ginseng, Rhus verniciflua Stokes) on the SNU-80 anaplastic thyroid carcinoma cell line. Methods: MTT assay was used to examine whether our herbal medicine mixtures decreased cell growth rate of SNU-80. Wound healing assay and Transwell invasion assay was performed to investigate whether our herbal medicine mixtures affect the migration and invasion of anaplastic cancer cells, SNU-80. ELISA assay was performed to know if our herbal medicine mixtures suppressed the expression of pro-invasive molecules, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) secreted from SNU-80. Results: MTT assay demonstrated that A. membranaceus:A. gigas:T. kirilowii=1:1:1 or 3:1:1, A. membranaceus:A. gigas :T. kirilowii:P. ginseng=1:1:1:1 or 3:1:1:1, A. membranaceus:A. gigas:T. kirilowii:P. ginseng:R. verniciflua Stokes=1:1:1:1:1 or 3:1:1:1:1 strongly suppressed the growth of SNU-80. Wound healing assay demonstrated that A. membranaceus:A. gigas=3:1, A. membranaceus:A. gigas:T. kirilowii=1:1:1 or 3:1:1, A. membranaceus:A. gigas:T. kirilowii:P. ginseng=1:1:1:1 or 3:1:1:1, A. membranaceus:A. gigas:T. kirilowii:P. ginseng:R. verniciflua Stokes=1:1:1:1:1 or 3:1:1:1:1 inhibited the migration of SNU-80. Transwell invasion assay demonstrated that A. membranaceus:A. gigas=1:1, A. membranaceus:A. gigas:T. kirilowii =1:1:1 or 3:1:1, A. membranaceus:A. gigas:T. kirilowii:P. ginseng=1:1:1:1, A. membranaceus:A. gigas:T. kirilowii:P. ginseng :R. verniciflua Stokes=1:1:1:1:1 or 3:1:1:1:1 inhibited the invasion of SNU-80. ELISA assay demonstrated that A. membranaceus :A. gigas:T. kirilowii=1:1:1 or 3:1:1, A. membranaceus:A. gigas:T. kirilowii:P. ginseng:R. verniciflua Stokes=1:1:1:1:1 suppressed the expression of VEGF. Conclusions: The results obtained in this study suggest that several herbal medicine mixtures suppresse the growth and inhibit the migration and invasion of SNU-80, which is anaplastic thyroid cancer cells. Especially, A. membranaceus:A. gigas: T. kirilowii=1:1:1 mixture had a stronger anti-cancer effect.
Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is commonly and effectively used to treat hydrocephalus. Intracardiac migration of the shunt catheter is a rare complication. A 68-year-old woman underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunting for hydrocephalus secondary to subarachnoid hemorrhage due to anterior communicating artery aneurysm rupture. Two weeks after the shunt surgery, she had suffered from the abdominal pain. Plain chest x-rays, computed tomography, and echocardiography revealed the distal catheter which was in the right ventricle of the heart. We tried to remove the catheter through the internal jugular vein by fluoroscopic guidance. But, the distal catheter was kinked and knotted; therefore, we failed to withdraw the catheter. After then, we punctured the right femoral vein and pulled down the multi-knotted shunt catheter to the femoral vein using the snare catheter. Finally, we removed the knotted distal catheter via the femoral vein and a new distal catheter was placed into the peritoneal cavity. We report a case in which the distal catheter of the VP shunt migrated into the heart via the internal jugular vein. We emphasize the importance of careful and proper placement of the distal catheter during the tunneling procedure to prevent life-threatening complications.
Ion diffusion and chemical binding to acrylic polymer were investigated in a solid film. The composition of acrylic monomers containing amino group and carboxylic acid was adjusted for rapid ion migration in the film. p-Methylred (PMR) and phenolphthalein derivatives were optically sensitive to the concentration of proton and hydroxyl anion, respectively and verified the ion migration through the film layers. A rapid proton migration was observed in the film of a high amino content. On the other hand, $OH^-$ migration occurred rapidly in a high content of carboxylic acid group. The proton migration occurred through the internal layer as well as surface layer of a film and was reversible during 50 repetition examination. Copper(II) ion migration was examined with a Rhodamine-containing polymer film. The light absorption and emission spectra of a Rhodamine-Cu complex showed the key contribution of carboxylic acid group to the Cu(II) migration in a film.
Synovial fluid (SF) contains various factors which may be helpful for corneal stromal healing, such as cytokines, growth factors, hyaluronic acid, and proteins. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of SF on proliferation and migration in canine keratocytes. In order to evaluate the degree of proliferation and migration, canine keratocytes were cultured in DMEM containing 1%, 3%, 5%, or 10% SF. Real-time PCR was performed in a control group and the group treated with 5% SF, in order to measure the expression levels of factors associated with corneal wound healing. These factors included interleukin-1α (IL-1α), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), and α-smooth muscle actin (SMA-α). Proliferation assays demonstrated that proliferation was significantly enhanced in groups treated with greater than 3% SF, as compared with that of the control group. In addition, migration in all SF-treated groups was significantly increased as compared with migration in the control group, as measured by migration assays. mRNA expression of IL-1α and HGF was significantly increased and mRNA expression of TGF-β and SMA-α was significantly decreased in the cells treated with 5% SF. These findings suggest that SF may promote corneal wound healing.
This study empirically estimates the possible association between the college graduate Young Peoples' wages in the labor market and their internal migration through college education after high school education. Using the Graduate Occupation Mobility Survey(GOMS), we found out that the more likely young peoples find jobs in the location from different their hometown the higher they command wages in the labor market.

Background: The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) is increasing, with metastasis of newly diagnosed CRC reported in a large proportion of patients. However, the effect of Korean Red Ginseng extracts (KRGE) on epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) in CRC is unknown. Therefore, we examined the mechanisms by which KRGE regulates EMT of CRC in hypoxic conditions. Methods: Human CRC cell lines HT29 and HCT116 were incubated under hypoxic (1% oxygen) and normoxic (21% oxygen) conditions. Western blot analysis and real-time PCR were used to evaluate the expression of EMT markers in the presence of KRGE. Furthermore, we performed scratched wound healing, transwell migration, and invasion assays to monitor whether KRGE affects migratory and invasive abilities of CRC cells under hypoxic conditions. Results: KRGE-treated HT29 and HCT116 cells displayed attenuated vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mRNA levels and hypoxia-inducible $factor-1{\alpha}$ ($HIF-1{\alpha}$) protein expression under hypoxic conditions. KRGE repressed Snail, Slug, and Twist mRNA expression and integrin ${\alpha}V{\beta}6$ protein levels. Furthermore, hypoxia-repressed E-cadherin was restored in KRGE-treated cells; KRGE blocked the invasion and migration of colon cancer cells by repressing $NF-{\kappa}B$ and ERK1/2 pathways in hypoxia. Conclusions: KRGE inhibits hypoxia-induced EMT by repressing $NF-{\kappa}B$ and ERK1/2 pathways in colon cancer cells.
The main purpose of this paper is to examine selectivity and rasons for move of internal migrants in Korea. There have only been a few studies available on the issues of selectivity and reasons for move of internal migration in Korea, mainly due to the lack of appropriate data. The main source of data for this analysis come from the raw data set of the 1997 Special Migration Survey conducted by the National Statistical Office. Analysis of selectivity of those who moved across the provincial boundary revealed that females, young adults, singles in their marital status and more educated are more likely to move. Among various reasons for move, employment related reason is the most important for all migration streams. But with different migration streams, diverse patterns are emerged. For those who moved into the Capital Region, employment related reason is outstanding. But those who moved out from the Capital Region, moved for employment as well as family related reasons. For movement within the Capital Region, housing related reason is equally important together with employment and family reason. The analysis also found that among individual attributes, age and marital status affect most significantly to the reasons for move. Education level and housing ownership are also important for explaining for variations in reasons for move.
