  • A 51-year-old male was admitted due to mediastinal mass. Chest PA showed a $4{\times}5$ cm sized round mass on right lower paratracheal area. The chest computerized tomogram showed cystic mass located between superior vena cava and trachea. This cystic mass was composed of variable internal architecture with Hounsfield unit(HU) from -44.4 to +25.5. The resected cystic mass revealed ectodermal, mesodermal, and endodermal structures. We report a case of anterior mediastinal cystic teratoma confirmed by open thoracotomy.

  • We report a rare synchronous presentation of primary lung cancer and adrenal pheochromocytoma. A 59-year-old woman was diagnosed with right upper lobe non-small cell lung carcinoma measuring 2.8 cm and a right adrenal gland mass measuring 3.5 cm, which displayed increased metabolic activity on $^{18}F$-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography. The adrenal lesion was revealed to be asymptomatic. The patient underwent right adrenalectomy and histological examination revealed a pheochromocytoma. Ten days later, right upper lobectomy was performed for lung cancer. This case indicates that incidental adrenal lesions found in cases of resectable primary lung cancer should be investigated.

  • There are different kinds of the pseudo-mass of the gallbladder(GB) such as GB stones, GB polyps, GB sludge, and these can be differentiated by simple-ultrasonogram(USG). The most common symptoms of GB polyps are abdominal pain(RUQ), dyspepsia, jaundice, but usually there are no symptoms. GB polyps are commonly treated with a cholecystectomy if 10 mm or more in diameter. Pseudo-mass of the GB is regarded as products of stagnation of the Liver Ki in Oriental Medicine. The patient suffered from mild fever. abdominal pain(RUQ), and jaundice. He was diagnosed with a GB polyp(10 mm), liver cyst(12 mm) by simple USG. We treated him with Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine(Hoinsamgum-tang). After three days of treatment, the symptoms improved, and after one month the GB polyp was removed on the follow up of USG.

  • Occupational lung diseases are caused by several toxic substances including heavy metals; however, the exact pathologic mechanisms remain unknown. In the workplace, dental technicians are often exposed to heavy metals such as cobalt, nickel, or beryllium and occasionally develop occupational lung diseases. We described a case of occupational lung disease in a patient who was employed as a dental technician for over a decade. A 31-year-old, non-smoking woman presented with productive cough and shortness of breath of several weeks duration. Chest computed tomography revealed a large number of scattered, bilateral small pulmonary nodules throughout the lung field, and multiple mediastinal lymph nodes enlargement. Percutaneous needle biopsy showed multifocal small granulomas with foreign body type giant cells suggestive of heavy metals inhalation. The patient's condition improved on simple avoidance strategy for several months. This case highlighted the importance of proper workplace safety.

  • Systemic sclerosis Sine scleroderma(ssSSc) is an uncommon subtype of Systemic sclerosis(SSc), which is believed to attack internal organs without causing changes in the skin. Electrogastrography has been known to be a simple, non-invasive, and effective method in assessing gastric motility. In this new study, a case of Systemic sclerosis Sine Scleroderma exhibiting gastric symptoms was observed. For this, we applied herbal medicine. manual acupucture, electro-acupucture, and lumbar skin wanning. After applying these therapies, both systemic and dyspeptic symptoms of the patient improved. Electrogastrography suggests a relation between gastric myoelectrical activity and the patient's improvement in dyspeptic symptoms. Therefore, based on study of Oriental medical classics and recent medical articles, clinically emperical success in treating gastric dysmotility was seen in a patient with Systemic sclerosis Sine Scleroderma.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of traditional Korean medicine as a treatment for a diabetic patient diagnosed with herniated intervertebral lumbar discs. Methods: We treated the patient with herbal medicines, acupuncture, herbal acupuncture therapy, and physical therapy. We measured the state and progress of this case with the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). We also checked serum glucose levels (FBS/PP2hrs) regularly. Results: After treatment, the NRS score was decreased, the ODI score was improved, and the blood glucose level was stabilized. The overall symptoms of the patient showed positive improvement.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the efficacy of Korean medical treatment for reflux esophagitis. Methods: We used Korean medical treatment (herbal medicines, acupuncture, herbal acupuncture, and therapy) to treat a hospitalized patient with reflux esophagitis. To evaluate the treatment, we measured the symptoms using the Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for heartburn, acid reflux, chest pain, foreign body sensations in the throat, chronic cough, hoarseness, and bronchial asthma. The generic health status was evaluated using the European Quality of Life Five-Dimension (EQ-5d) Scale. Results: The RSI and EQ-5d scores improved following treatment, but the VAS scores showed that only heartburn, acid reflux, and chest pain symptoms were relieved. Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean medicine may be effective for treating reflux esophagitis.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report on the efficacy of Korean medical treatment for voiding dysfunction. Methods: We treated a patient with voiding dysfunction using Korean medical treatments (herbal medicines, acupuncture, and herbal acupuncture therapy). To evaluate the results of this treatment, we measured the international prostate symptom score (IPSS) and the visual analog scale (VAS) for residual urination, dysuria, and miction pain. The general health status was evaluated with the European quality of life-5 dimensions (EQ-5d) scale. Results: We observed improvements in the IPSS and the EQ-5d scale after the treatments. Changes in the VAS reflected relief of residual urination and dysuria but not miction pain. Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean medicine may be effective to treat voiding dysfunction.
