A method to improve internal corrosion control efficiency by adding lime and carbon dioxide, which, in turn increases the Langelier Index (LI) for filtered water at a conventional drinking water treatment plant (WTP) was investigated. The SJ WTP (Q=100,000 $m^{3}$/d) has been operating an internal corrosion control system since 2006. The system has achieved stable operation through technical development and trial and error over a period of several years. As a result of the operation, the LI of treated water has increased up to 29% by adjusting pH of filtered water to 7.8 with the addition of lime and carbon dioxide. Coupon tests in the distribution system indicated that the corrosion rate has been delayed by 24% when the internal corrosion method was implemented. The increase of LI by lime and carbon dioxide has been proven to be a practical method for controlling corrosion.
The internal corrosion of water distribution systems is the main cause for the problem of the public health threat as well as water leakage in the damaged pipeline, red water, and odor and taste of the tap water. This study was examined the effect of chemicals used for pH and alkalinity control and corrosion inhibitors for producing the optimal corrosion control method. Corrosion study at different pH and alkalinity indicated that these control using alkaline chemicals was effective in corrosion rate, Fe release reduction, but examined to be increased in turbidity and corrosion-by-products(TTHMs) problems. The turbidity was slightly increased, requiring caution in controlling corrosion with $Ca(OH)_2$. At pH 9.0, TTHMs concentration is increased two times corn pared with non-control of pH. Using the pipe which had experienced 28 years of exposure, iron release was decreased with the corrosion inhibitor. Consequently, pH, Alkalinity control method using alkaline chemicals must be complemented by corrosion inhibitor application for efficient corrosion control.
Although final water of domestic water treatment plants almost contains highly corrosive characteristics, the countermeasures for eliminating internal corrosion of pipeline system have not been conducted yet by controlling water quality in plants. The technologies of internal corrosion control are to control water quality parameters(pH, Alkalinity, and Calcium Hardness etc.) and to use corrosion inhibitor. Under the conditions of domestic water treatment, first of all, the technologies of adjusting water quality parameters has to be considered. Otherwise, The technology of using corrosion inhibitor is favorably thought to be applied with the technology of adjusting water quality parameters in accordance with the result of availability for water treatment process. Since the technology of adjusting water quality parameter influences on other water treatment processes, the guideline of water quality management to be apt for water quality characteristic is required to be estabilished. While the selection of proper chemicals and technologies is dependent upon the raw water characteristics and water treatment process, typically, the technology of $Ca(OH)_2$ & $CO_2$ additions is considered more effective than other technologies in order to adjust pH and Alkalinity, increase $Ca^{2+}$ and form $CaCO_3$ film
To investigate the application of corrosion inhibitor on water supply pipes, turbidity, magnitude of corrosion, composition of scale and concentration of metals from an old steel pipe were analysed under inhibitor addition. The concentration of turbidity, iron and copper from the pipes under inhibitor application was 12 ~ 14% of the case which no inhibitor was applied, which suggests the application of inhibitor was very effective for internal corrosion control. In addition, SEM, EDX, XRD and XRF test results showed that application of inhibitor was effective for the decrease of iron concentration and increase of oxygen, phosphorus and calcium concentration, which suggested the existence of protective layer. Therefore, the occurrence of red water will be significantly decreased when inhibitor was applied to the old steel pipes.

In a power plant, it is generally accepted that a turbine governor system is necessary to control amount of steam supply toward the turbine system. There are many kinds of trouble at this governor system, which is recognized one of the most sensitive systems in the power plant. Especially we have experienced the internal leakage of motorization oil of servo valve. In the study, we investigated the mechanism of an internal leakage such as erosion by foreign materials and corrosion by chemical reaction between chloric healed oil and motorization oil. A precautionary measures is also performed to help the field service engineers.
To investigate corrosivity characteristics of tap water in Korea, Langelier index (LI) of 30 multi-regional water treatment plants (WTPs) were evaluated. Weekly LI values of 30 WTPs were all negative, which means tap water in Korea might be very corrosive. Maximum LI decrease through water treatment processes was 0.95 under no additional corrosion control process. Based on the correlation results between LI and tap water qualities, pH and calcium concentration were confirmed as major parameters for LI control. Addition of calcium hydroxide with $CO_{2}$ or calcium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide can be chosen based on water quality. Continuous monitoring of LI and related parameters is recommended in water distribution system.
Based upon the good compatibility to neutron irradiation and high temperature water environment, austenitic stainless steels are widely used for core internal structural materials of light water reactors. But, recently, intergranular cracking was detected in the stainless steels for the core applications in some commercial PWR plants. Authors studied on the root cause of the intergranular cracking and developed the countermeasure including the alternative materials for these core applications. The intergranular cracking in these core applications are defined as an irradiation assisted mechanical cracking and irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking. In this paper, the root cause of the intergranular cracking and its countermeasure are summarized and discussed.
Significant piping wall thinning caused by Flow-Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) and Erosion-Corrosion (EC) continues to occur, even after the Mihama Power Station unit 3 secondary pipe rupture in 2004, in which workers were seriously injured or died. Nuclear power plants in many countries have experienced FAC and EC-related cases in steam cycle piping systems. Korea has also experienced piping wall thinning cases including thinning in the downstream straight pipe of a check valve in a feedwater pump line, the downstream elbow of a control valve in a feedwater flow control line, and failure of the straight pipe downstream of an orifice in an auxiliary steam return line. Cause analyses were performed by reviewing thickness data using Ultrasonic Techniques (UT) and, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images for the failed pipe, and numerical simulation results for FAC and EC cases in Korea Nuclear Power Plants. It was concluded that the main cause of wall thinning for the downstream pipe of a check valve is FAC caused by water vortex flow due to the internal flow shape of a check valve, the main cause of wall thinning for the downstream elbow of a control valve is FAC caused by a thickness difference with the upstream pipe, and the main cause of wall thinning for the downstream pipe of an orifice is FAC and EC caused by liquid droplets and vortex flow. In order to investigate more cases, additional analyses were performed with the review of a lot of thickness data for inspected pipes. The results showed that pipe wall thinning was also affected by the operating condition of upstream equipment. Management of FAC and EC based on these cases will focus on the downstream piping of abnormal or unusual operated equipment.
Nondestructive inspection(NDI) is a testing procedure used to easily inspect an object for internal defects, abnormalities, shape, and structure, etc. without destroying it. Typical candidates for NDI include buildings, railways, aircraft, bridges, underground pipelines and various types of factory equipment. Recent advances in nondestructive evaluation(NDE) technologies have led to improved methods for quality control and in-service inspection, and the development of new options for material diagnostics. Under frame side sill in rolling stocks is designed for preventing corrosion in order to meet mechanical requirements. However during long operation time, there are corrosion in the under frame side sill caused by environmental effect, vibration and etc. This paper introduces the methods of a survey and assessment on NDI applications in Electric Multiple Units(EMU). The main objective of this paper was to obtain information on various applications and evaluation of NDI technology in EMU.
To investigate corrosivity characteristics of raw water in Korea, Langelier index (LI) of 30 multi-regional water treatment plants (WTPs) were evaluated. Annual average values of LI at 30 WTPs were all negative, which means raw water in Korea is very corrosive. LI results for 4 major rivers showed that raw water from Han and Nakdong had relatively high values compared to those of Sumjin and Keum. On the other hand, LI values of raw water from the tributaries of four major rivers were relatively low presumably due to geological characteristics, and in some cases the values were less than -4.0 which means increase of LI is urgently needed to minimize red water problem. Based on the correlation results among LI and water quality parameters, pH, water temperature, calcium concentration were confirmed as major components for LI. Therefore, pH and calcium concentration control is an effective method for the improvement of LI in water treatment processes.
