Focusing on the factors related to the amount of contact between young married women and their noncoresident parents and their noncoresident parents-in-law, the study hypothesized two scenarios. (1) filial piety scenario which predicts that the contact with one set of parents is not affected by accessibility of other set of parents, and (2) competition scenario which predicts that ease of contact with one set of parents inhibits contact with other set of parents. These scenarios were tested against the data from National Fertility and Family Health Survey in 1994. The regression analysis of intergenerational visits appeared to support the competition scenario : The parents-in-law and the parents seem to bs in competition for visits by young married women - distance from the parents from one side has a parallel relationship to more frequent visits with the other set of parents. This is a much more equal footing for both sides of the family than attention to filial piety would predict. although the level of support from the young generation may keep declining.
Objectives: This study examined the effects of residential proximity to adult children on the mental and physical health of middle-aged and older parents. The study also evaluated whether the parental age and gender of the adult child in closest proximity to the parent might moderate the association. Method: Data were drawn from five waves of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging(2006-2014). The analytic sample consisted of 7,359 parents aged 45 or older who had at least one non-coresidential adult child aged 19 or older. The analyses were conducted by estimating a series of fixed effects models while adjusting for the nested structure of the data. Results: The results showed that first, a closer distance between an adult child and the parent was generally associated with the parent experiencing a decrease in depressive symptoms. Yet, the mental health benefit was smaller for parents aged 65 years or older whose closest living adult child was a son. Second, a closer distance was observed to affect chronic illness only among middle-aged parents (aged 45 to 64). When the closest living adult child was a daughter, the middle-aged parent experienced deterioration in their chronic illness. On the other hand, the opposite pattern was observed when the closest living adult child was a son. Conclusions: The parental age and gender of the adult child in closest proximity to the parent might have varying effects on parents' health. A closer distance between an adult child and their parent has a positive impact on the mental health of the parent as a whole, whereas the effect of living closer was mixed in relation to the parental physical health.
Objectives: Grounded in a life-course perspective, this study examined the effects of non-coresident children's transitions to marriage and parenthood on the frequency of contact with their parents. Gender of adult children and the educational levels of both adult children and their parents were evaluated as potential moderators of the transition-contact linkages. Method: The analytic sample consisted of adult children aged between 20 and 50 whose parents participated in four waves of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (2006, 2008, 2010, 2012). For analysis, fixed effects regression models were estimated using the xtreg procedure in Stata. Results: First, transition to marriage was associated with a decrease in face-to-face contact, whereas a greater increase in contact with parents via phone, mail, email etc. occurred only among newly married with less than college education compared to the newlywed with college degrees. Second, transition to parenthood was associated with an increase in contact via phone, mail, email etc. In addition, a greater increase in face-to-face contact was found with parents who completed high school or more education compared to those with less than high school education. Conclusions: The findings suggest that adult children's transitions to marriage and parenthood may bring about increases in contact with their parents, particularly for adult children with less than college education and parents with more than high school education.
The prevalence of childhood obesity is increasing worldwide at an alarming rate. While obesity is known to increase a variety of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, it also acts as a risk factor for the development and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). During childhood and adolescence, severe obesity is associated with an increased prevalence and incidence of the early stages of kidney disease. Importantly, children born to obese mothers are also at increased risk of developing obesity and CKD later in life. The potential mechanisms underlying the association between obesity and CKD include hemodynamic factors, metabolic effects, and lipid nephrotoxicity. Weight reduction via increased physical activity, caloric restriction, treatment with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, and judicious bariatric surgery can be used to control obesity and obesity-related kidney disease. Preventive strategies to halt the obesity epidemic in the healthcare community are needed to reduce the widespread deleterious consequences of obesity including CKD development and progression.
Few studies have done on the intergenerational relations of married women and their own parents in Japan. This study approaches the topic by examining coresidence and contact frequency between generations. The study expects the likelihood of living together (including living next door) and the extent of contact would differ by the characteristics of woman, her husband, children, her brothers and sisters, her own parents and parents-in-law. From the 2003 Survey for National Family Research in Japan, selected are 853 currently married women in their 30s and 40s whose parent and parents-in-law are alive. The analysis shows that the likelihood of living together with parents decreases as the number of brothers and sisters increases. In particular, the presence of brother substantially decreases the likelihood. Having father only alive (vs. having both parents alive) also increases the likelihood. The frequency of contact with parents is conditioned by the coresidence with parents-in-law. It also differs by the level of education and its gap between spouses. Subjective evaluation of husband's attitude toward her parents is important. As in the case of living together, the number of brothers and sisters and the survival status of parents are significant in explaining the frequency of contact with her parents. The results indicate that number of brothers and sisters as well as widowhood of parents serves as its demographic condition. The findings that the frequency of contact with parent are affected by coresidene with parents-in-law, education gap between spouses and husband's attitude toward her parents suggest that the relationship of married women with her own parents are conditioned by her husband and his parents.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to construct a structural equation model of organizational commitment in hospital nurses based on a job demands-resources model and to confirm the moderating effect(s) according to the nurses' generation. Methods: The model was constructed of the exogenous variables of social support, emotional intelligence, emotional labor, and job conflict and the endogenous variables of burnout, job engagement, and organizational commitment. The participants were 560 hospital nurses working in 3 general hospitals. Data were collected from August 1 to September 30, 2021, and analyzed using SPSS Window 23.0 and IBM AMOS 23.0. Results: The strongest factor directly influencing hospital nurses' organizational commitment was social support. In a multiple group analysis, nurses' generation had a partial moderating effect. In a generation-specific analysis, the Z generation group was higher than the X and Y generation groups in the variables of emotional labor and burnout related to organizational commitment. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, to improve hospital nurses' organizational commitment, social support is needed as an important management strategy. At the organizational level, we need to develop ways to improve organizational commitment by reducing the emotional labor and burnout of Generation Z.
This paper aims to examine the causes and features of current generational conflicts in Korea and to discuss their implications. The data utilized in the study include collective data on presidential and general elections and secondary data obtained from empirical research. The findings are as follows. First, generational power conflicts express itself by struggles among generations concerning the timing of political power transfer. An average age of assemblymen decreases consistently regardless of changes in overriding ideological atmosphere in general - conservative vs. liberal. Second, ideological conflicts among generations were highly intensified around 2002 presidential election, but gradually moderated since 2004 general election. The conflicts might be re-intensified if a set of conditions were satisfied. Third, cultural conflicts between older and younger generations were contrasted around three cultual axes: economic growth with top priority vs. consumerism, collectivism vs. individualism, and authoritarianism vs. post-authoritarianism. To ease strained relations between generations, intergenerational programs were suggested.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze how the experiences of nurses influence their role model function when they are mothers of children who in turn have become nurses or nursing students. Method: The subjects of this study were 12 nurses, 8 of their children who became nurses and another 4 children then in training to become one. Data were collected through in-depth personal interviews and subsequently analyzed through a phenomenological approach. Results: Four main themes were identified as follows; 'Persuasion and dissuasion,' 'Proud but still pathetic,' 'As mom and senior nurse' and 'Great to pass it down.' Conclusion: The results of this study show that the nurse as mother could be a positive professional role model for her children. However, they tended to stress the arduous clinical routines and poor work conditions nurses currently experience. Should such routines and conditions improve, mothers who are nurses would be more willing to recommend the nursing profession to their children. Improving the professional environment is thus important because intergeneration nursing mobility provides a reliable resource to recruit qualified and dedicated nursing personnel.
Recently, the youth employment crisis which is characterized by high unemployment and low employment rate has been considerably serious, while jobless growth has been observed. However, job shortage and unstable labor status of the old are also main issues. To solve this problem, the job creation and deferred retirement for the old has been proceeded. Consequently, it has caused to the intergenerational war on job due to equity of job creation for the youth. However, it is not desirable that the problem would be diagnosed and the policy would be set up although little attention has so far been paid to test empirically this kind of substitution relation. Thus, this research has been analyzed whether the employment relation between the youth and the old is substitution or not. The analysis method is panel data analysis in 15 OECD countries including Korea(1990~2000). Major findings are as follows. First, only half of the youth and the old works. It provides the evidence that the employment crisis is not a problem of special generation but all of them. Second, employment relation between generations followed by panel analysis is not substitution relation. This findings can be interpreted as evidence that it is unlikely to solve the youth employment matter even though the government encourages the early retirement.
