  • It is investigated how KOH and Rthylenediamine(EDA) treatment conditions on Polyimide film surface affect the interfacial fracture energy between electroless plated Ni and Polyimide film by $180^{\circ}$ peel test. Estimated values of interfacial fracture energy were 24.5 g/mm and 33.3 g/mm for the KOH treatment times under 1 and 5 minutes, respectively, while, those were 31.6 g/mm and 22.3 g/mm for EDA treatment times under 1 and 5 minutes, respectively. Interfacial bonding between electroless plated Ni and Polyimide seems to be dominated by chemical bonding effect rather than mechanical interlocking effect. It is found that chemical treatment produces carboxyl and mine functional groups which are closely related the interfacial bonding mechanism. Finally, it is speculated that interfacial fracture energy seems to be controlled by O=C-O bonding near cohesive failure region.

  • Conventional fracture test of resistance spot weld had been performed without consideration of paint baking process in automobile manufacturing line. This study was aim to investigate the effect of paint baking on fracture mode and load carrying capacity in fracture test for resistance spot welded 780TRIP steels. With paint baking cycle after resistance spot welds, peel tests and microhardness were conducted on the as-welded and baked samples. Resistance spot welds in AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steels) are prone to display partial interfacial fractures during fracture test or vehicle crash. Baking cycle increased the load-carrying capacity of the resistance spot welded samples and improved the fracture appearance from partial to full button fracture for the L-type peel tests. Specially, the differences in fracture appearance are apparent when the nugget size of spot welds is small enough to produce the partial interfacial fracture. The comparison of macrohardness and microstructure between as-welded and baked samples showed that there are no large difference in change the fracture mode. However, the results of the instrumented indentation test suggested that fusion zone and HAZ of baked sample have less tensile and yield strength and proves that the tempering effects are applied and enhanced the resistance to fracture on welds with application of baking cycle.

  • Interfacial evaluation and damage sensing of the carbon fiber/epoxy-amine terminated (AT)-polyetherimide (PEI) composites were performed using micromechanical test and electrical resistance measurement. As AT-PEI content increased, the fracture toughness of epoxy-AT-PEI matrix increased, and thus their interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was improved due to the improved toughness. After curing process, the changes in electrical resistance (ΔR) with increasing AT-PEI contents increased gradually because of the changes in thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) and thermal shrinkage of matrix. Matrix fracture toughness was correlated to the IFSS, residual stress and electrical resistance. The results obtained from the electrical resistance measurement during curing process, reversible stress/strain, and durability test were consistent with modified matrix toughness properties.

  • This paper investigated acoustic emission (AE) characteristics in association with various fracture processes of glass fiber reinforced plastic skin/ aluminum honeycomb core (GF-AH) hybrid composites under compressive and bending loads. Various failure modes such as skin layer fracture, skin/core interfacial fracture, and local plastic yield buckling and cell wall adhesive fracture occurring in the honeycomb cell wall were classified through the fracture identification in association with the AE frequency and amplitude analysis. The distribution of the event-rate in which it has a high amplitude showed a procedure of cell wall adhesive fracture, skin/core interfacial debonding and fiber breakage, whereas distribution of different peak frequencies indicated the plastic deformation of aluminum cell wall and the friction between honeycomb walls. Consequently, the fracture behaviors of GF-AH hybrid composites could be characterized through a nondestructive evaluation employing the AE technique.

  • Fiber fracture is one of the dominant failure phenomena affecting the total mechanical Performance of the composites. Fiber fracture locations were measured through the conventional optical microscope and the nondestructive acoustic emission (AE) technique and then were compared together as a function of the epoxy matrix modulus and the fiber surface treatment by the electrodeposition method (ED). Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was measured using tensile fragmentation test in combination of AE method. ED treatment of the fiber surface enlarged the number of fiber fracture locations in comparison to the untreated case. The number of fiber fracture events measured by the AE method was less than optically obtained one. However, fiber fracture locations determined by AE detection corresponded with those by optical observation with small errors. The source location of fiber breaks by AE analysis could be a nondestructive, valuable method to measure interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of matrix in non-, semi- and/or transparent polymer composites.

  • Interfacial crack problems between fiber and matrix in composite materials are discussed. A series of interfacial crack initiation and propagation experiments are conducted using the biaxial loading device for various mode-mixes. Normal crack opening displacement (NCOD) is measured near crack front by a crack opening interferometry and used for extracting fracture parameters. From mixed mode interfacial crack initiation experiments, large increase in toughness with shear components is observed. Initial velocity of crack propagation is very dependent upon the mode-mixes. It increased with positive mode-mix due to the increase of stress singularities ahead of crack front and decreased with negative mode-mix resulting from the increase of the degree of compressive stress behind the crack front. Crack propagation was less accelerated with positive mode-mix than the negative mode-mix.

  • The initial crack often occurs on the bonded interface and it is the general cause of the interface fracture. It is very significant to establish the measurement method of interfacial crack by applying the ultrasonic technology into the interface of bonded dissimilar materials. In this paper, the interfacial crack length was measured by ultrasonic attenuation coefficient in the Al/Epoxy bonded dissimilar materials of double-cantilever beam(DCB). The energy release rate, G, was obtained by the experimental and Ripling's equation measurement of compliance. The experimental results represent that the relation between interfacial crack length for the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient and energy release rate is increased proportionally. From the experimental results, a measurement method of the interfacial crack length by the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient was proposed and discussed.

  • Mechanical properties of (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al hybrid composites fabricated by the reaction squeeze casting were compared with those of (15%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al composites. Intermetallic compound formed by reaction between molten aluminum and reinforcing powder was uniformly distributed in the Al matrix. These intermetallic compounds were identified as $Al_3$NI using EDS and X-ray diffraction analysis. Microhardness and flexural strength of hybrid composites were higher than that of (15%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al Composite. In-Situ fracture tests were Conducted on (15%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al Composites and (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al hybrid composites to identify the microfracture process. It was identified from the in-situ fracture test of (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al composites, microcracks were initiated mainly at the short fiber / matrix interfaces. As the loading was continued, the crack propagated mainly along the separated interfacial regions and the well developed shear bands. It was identified from the in-situ fracture test of (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al hybrid composites, microcracks were initiated mainly by the short fiber/matrix interfacial debonding. The crack proceeded mainly through the intermetallic compound clusters

  • The purpose of present paper is to investigate a fracture characteristics of the finite-width single-edge-notch(SEN) carbon fiber/epoxy reinforced plastics(CFRP) plates by using an acoustic emission(AE). Uni-directionally oriented 10 plies CFRPs specimen which had different notch length were prepared for monotonic tensile test. Matrix cracking appeared over whole testing process and fiber breaking appeared later on mainly Load distribution factor of the matrix confirmed that increased according as increases of plate width ratio. The amplitude distribution of AE signal from a specimens is an aid to the determination of the different fracture mechanism such as matrix cracking, disbonding, interfacial delamination, fiber pull-out, fiber breaking, and etc. In the result of AE amplitude distribution analysis, matrix cracking, fiber disbonding or interfacial delamination, and fiber pull-out or fiber breaking signal correspond to <65dB, <75dB, and <90dB respectively, Also, changes of the slope of cumulative AE energy represented crazing phenomena or degradation of materials.
