The resistance spot welding of TRIP590 steels was investigated to enhance understanding of weld fracture during tensile-shear strength (TSS) test. The main failure modes for spot welds of TRIP590 steels were nugget pullout and interfacial fracture. The peak load to cause a weld interfacial failure was found to be related to fracture toughness of the weld and the weld diameter. Although interfacial fracture occurred in the samples, the load carrying capacity of the weld was high and not significantly affected by the fracture mode. Substantial part of the weld exhibits the characteristic dimple (or elongated dimple) fractures on interfacial fractured surface, in spite of the high hardness values associated with the martensite microstructures. The high load-bearing ability of the weld is directly associated with the area of ductile fracture occurred in weld. Therefore, the judgment of the quality of resistance spot welds in TRIP590 steels, the load carrying capacity of the weld should be considered as an important factor than fracture mode.

Co-cured single lap joints under cyclic tensile loads fail initially at the tip of the interface corner between the two adherents. The failure mechanism is complex because it is related to corrosion fatigue. Corrosion behavior at the interface affects the failure of the joints because corrosion deteriorates fatigue resistance. In this study, we clarified the cause of interfacial corrosion in co-cured single lap joints under cyclic tensile loads. The failure mechanism was also analyzed by observing the failed surfaces of specimens and the stress distribution along the interface. The surface roughness at the interface and the stacking sequence of the composite adherent were examined to investigate their effects on failure of the joint.
In order to investigate the strength recovery of fire-damaged concrete after post-fire curing, concrete specimens were heating at $2^{\circ}C/min$ or $5^{\circ}C/min$ to 400, 600 and $800^{\circ}C$, and these exposed specimens were soaked in the water for 24 hours and following by 29-day post-fire curing. The compressive strength and split tensile strength of the high-temperature-exposed specimens before and after post-fire curing were tested. The proportion of split aggregate in the split surfaces was analyzed to evaluate the mortar-aggregate interfacial strength. After the post-fire curing process, the split tensile strength of specimens exposed to all temperatures was recovered significantly, while the recovery of compressive strength was only obvious within the specimens exposed to $600^{\circ}C$. The tensile strength is more sensitive to the mortar-aggregate interfacial cracks, which caused that the split tensile strength decreased more after high-temperature exposure and recovery more after post-fire curing than the compressive strength. The mortar-aggregate interfacial strength also showed remarkable recovery after post-fire curing, and it contributed to the recovery of split tensile strength.
This paper introduces a new efficient analytical method, based on shear deformations obtained with 2D elasticity theory approach, to perform an explicit closed-form solution for calculation the interfacial shear and normal stresses in plated RC beam. The materials of plate, necessary for the reinforcement of the beam, are in general made with fiber reinforced polymers (Carbon or Glass) or steel. The experimental tests showed that at the ends of the plate, high shear and normal stresses are developed, consequently a debonding phenomenon at this position produce a sudden failure of the soffit plate. The interfacial stresses play a significant role in understanding this premature debonding failure of such repaired structures. In order to efficiently model the calculation of the interfacial stresses we have integrated the effect of shear deformations using the equilibrium equations of the elasticity. The approach of this method includes stress-strain and strain-displacement relationships for the adhesive and adherends. The use of the stresses continuity conditions at interfaces between the adhesive and adherents, results pair of second-order and fourth-order coupled ordinary differential equations. The analytical solution for this coupled differential equations give new explicit closed-form solution including shear deformations effects. This new solution is indented for applications of all plated beam. Finally, numerical results obtained with this method are in agreement of the existing solutions and the experimental results.

The interfacial breakdown between two internal dielectric surfaces represents one of the major causes of failure for power cable joint. In order to better understand this phenomenon, breakdown experiments were performed for each interfacial condition at Epoxt/EPDM interface found in cable. The specimen were Epoxy resin and EPDM generally used in cable joint. The interface conditions were three parts. First condition was the pressure of interface, we used the value of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5[kg/cm$^2$]. For the second condition, the sanding condition was treated with sand paper #220, #600, #1200. Finally, we observed the breakdown according to the presence of silicon oil at the interface.
Recently, the external bonding of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets has come to be regarded as a very effective method for strengthening of reinforced concrete structures. The behavior of CFRP-strengthened RC structure is mainly governed by the interfacial behavior, which represents the stress transfer and relative slip between concrete and the CFRP sheet. In this study, the effects of bonded length, width and concrete strength on the interfacial behavior are verified and a bond-slip model is proposed. The proposed bond-slip model has nonlinear ascending regions and exponential descending regions, facilitated by modifying the conventional bilinear bond-slip model. Finite element analysis results of interface element implemented with bond-slip model have shown good agreement with the experimental results performed in this study. It is found that the failure load and strain distribution predicted by finite element analysis with the proposed bond-slip are in good agreement with results of experiments.
This paper aims to evaluate the interfacial stress concentrations on connection between vertical through-plate and H-beam in CFT column. Full-scale experiments were performed on three specimens with varying thickness of the vertical through-plate to investigate the interfacial stress concentration factor in the connections. The specimens underwent brittle failure at the location where the steel beam is connected to the vertical through-plate before the steel beam reached its plastic moment. The strain data of the part were analyzed, and the sectional analyses were conducted to determine appropriate residual stress models. In addition, the stress concentration factor was quantified by comparing the analytical local behavior in which the stress concentration is not reflected and the experimental data reflecting the stress concentration. The results showed that the maximum reduction of the stress concentration factor due to an increase in the thickness of the vertical through-plate is 50.3%.

Poly(arylene ether phosphin oxide) (PEPO), Udel$^{\circledR}$ P-1700, Ultem$^{\circledR}$ 1000. poly(hydroxy ether) (PHE), carboxy modified poly(hydroxy ether)(C-PHE) and poly(hydroxy ether ethanol amine) (PHEA) were utilized for a coating of carbon fibers. Interfacial shear strength(IFSS) of polymers to carbon fibers was also evaluated in order to understand the adhesion mechanism. IFSS was measured via micro-droplet tests, and failure surfaces were analyzed by SEM. Diffusion between polymer and vinyl ester resin was investigated as a function of styrene content; 33. 40 or 50wt.% and the solubility parameters of polymers were calculated. The results were correlated to the interfacial shear strength. The highly enhanced interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was obtained with PEPO coating, and marginally improved IFSS with PHE, Udel$^{\circledR}$ and C-PHE coatings, but no improvement with PHEA and Ultem$^{\circledR}$ coatings.

In this work, the grow of carbon nanotube (CNT) on carbon fiber was introduced on PAN-based carbon fibers for the enhancement of mechanical interfacial strength of carbon fibers-reinforced composites. The surface properties of carbon fibers were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). From the results, it was found that the mechanical interfacial properties of CNT-carbon fibers-reinforced composites (CNT-CFRPs) enhanced with decreasing the CNT content. The excessive CNT content can lead the failure due to the interfacial separation between fibers and matrices in this system. In conclusion, the optimum CNT content on carbon fiber surfaces can be a key factor to determine the mechanical interfacial properties of the CNT-CFRPs.

The current study focuses on the assessment and interface response of reinforced concrete elements with composite materials (carbon fiber reinforced polymers-CFRPs, glass fiber reinforced polymers-GFRPs, textile reinforced mortars-TRM's, near surface mounted bars-NSMs). A description of the transfer mechanisms from concrete elements to the strengthening materials is conducted through analytical models based on failure modes: plate end interfacial debonding and intermediate flexural crack induced interfacial debonding. A database of 55 in total reinforced concrete columns (scale 1:1) is assembled containing elements rehabilitated with various techniques (29 wrapped with CFRP's, 5 wrapped with GFRP's, 4 containing NSM and 4 strengthened with TRM). The failure modes are discussed together with the performance level of each technique as well as the efficiency level in terms of ductility and bearing/ bending capacity. The analytical models' results are in acceptable agreement with the experimental data and can predict the failure modes. Despite the heterogeneity of the elements contained in the aforementioned database the results are of high interest and point out the need to incorporate the analytical expressions in design codes in order to predict the failure mechanisms and the limit states of bearing capacities of each technique.
