  • This work identifies the key factors influencing the success of multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and trans-disciplinary R&D projects in transition economies by integrating knowledge management, organizational, inter/intra-collaboration (open-innovation), and leadership perspectives, while also addressing the perspective of the science of team science, which is an integrative approach to R&D. This is followed by providing the major sub-constructs of team science and policy implications to better facilitate multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary R&D projects in knowledge-based transition economies.

  • The success of genome-wide association studies (GWASs) has enabled us to improve risk assessment and provide novel genetic variants for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. However, most variants discovered by GWASs have been reported to have very small effect sizes on complex human diseases, which has been a big hurdle in building risk prediction models. Recently, many statistical approaches based on penalized regression have been developed to solve the "large p and small n" problem. In this report, we evaluated the performance of several statistical methods for predicting a binary trait: stepwise logistic regression (SLR), least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), and Elastic-Net (EN). We first built a prediction model by combining variable selection and prediction methods for type 2 diabetes using Affymetrix Genome-Wide Human SNP Array 5.0 from the Korean Association Resource project. We assessed the risk prediction performance using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for the internal and external validation datasets. In the internal validation, SLR-LASSO and SLR-EN tended to yield more accurate predictions than other combinations. During the external validation, the SLR-SLR and SLR-EN combinations achieved the highest AUC of 0.726. We propose these combinations as a potentially powerful risk prediction model for type 2 diabetes.

  • Background and purpose: The Han(cold)-Yol(heat) patternization is one of the most usually used diagnostic methods in oriental medicine. This is preceding studies for compensating questionnaries on Han-Yol that were made by sook-kyeng Kim. Methods: Questionnaries on Han-Yol that will be worked out should be useful for clinical examination. So We selected symptoms based on Donguibogam that is regarded as a clinical textbook in Korea. Results: It is expected that not only Sil-Yol but also Hu-Yol and Yol combined with Han can be diagnosed by new questionnaries. Conclusion: These symptoms based on Donguibogam will be made into questionnaries that can diagnose not only Sil-Yol but also Hu-Yol and Yol combined with Han.

  • The newly discovered properties of periodic nanoscale patterns have increasingly sparked research interests in various fields. Along this direction, it is worth mentioning that there had been rare studies conducted on interference exposure, a method of creating periodic patterns. Additionally, these few studies seemed to validate the existence of only exact quadrangle shapes and dot patterns. This study asserted the formation of wavy patterns associated to using multiple exposures of the ratio of the first exposure intensity to the second exposure intensity. Such patterns were designed and constructed herein via overlapping of two Gaussian beams relative to certain rotation angles, and with a submicron structure fabricated based on a 360-nm continuous-wave laser. Results confirmed that the proposed double exposure laser interference lithography is able to create circular, elliptical and wavy patterns with no need for complex optical components.

  • The overarching purpose of this study is to examine the current status of academic public engagement in Vietnam. Data were obtained from a survey with 245 university lecturers, and descriptive statistics were used jointly with Bayesian statistics as tools for analysis. This study reveals that a significant proportion of university lecturers are not involved in public engagement, neither through the public press (66.5%) nor social media (49%). Those who have been active in public engagement use the public press and social networks to communicate science, with the latter being more used than the former. In addition, this study also pointed out that experienced scientists tend to engage with the public press, while early-career researchers often choose social networks. The findings of this study provide implications for higher education policymakers and administrators.
