The electrical repulsive energy between two model cylinders was calculated by solving nonlinear Poission- Boltzmann (P-B) equation under Derjaguin approximation. Effects of the surface potential, Debye screening length, and configuration of cylinders on the repulsive interaction energy were examined. Due to the anisotropy of the shape of cylinder, the interaction repulsive energy showed dependence to the configuration of particles; cylinders aligned in end-to-end configuration showed largest repulsive energy and crossed particles had lowest interaction energy. The configuration effect is originated from the curvature effect of the interacting surfaces. The curved surfaces showed less repulsive energy than flat surfaces at the same interacting surface area. The configuration dependency of interaction energy agreed with the previous analytical solution obtained under the linearized P-B equation. The approach and results present in this report would be applicable in predicting colloidal behavior of cylindrical particles.
This study investigates the effect of polarity of oily soil on adhesion of oily and particulate soil to PET fabric in oily/particulate mixed soil systems. The potential energy of interaction between two particles was examined as a fundamental environment of adhesion of soil to fabrics. The ${\zeta}$-potential of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles was measured by a microelectrophoresis method, and the potential energy of interaction between two particles was calculated by using the Verwey-Overbeek theory. The ${\zeta}$-potential of particle and the potential energy of interaction between two particles was slightly influenced by the polarity and type of oily soil, but increased with the increased anionic surfactant concentration and amount of oily soil. The adhesion of oily soil to fabric increased with the additional amount of polarity of oily soil and decreased surfactant concentration that was relatively high at a temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ surfactants solution. The adhesion of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle to PET fabric decreased with an increased amount and polarity of oily soil and increased surfactant concentration Although some similarity exists, the general trend of the adhesion to fabric by particulate soil differ from oily soil.
To figure out the importance of temperature on electrochemical properties in water environment, calcium carbonate, one of important substances in water chemistry, was chosen to make suspensions. The result of electrokinetic potential of calcium carbonate suspensions revealed that it tended to increase as temperature increased. In addition, electrokinetic potential was negatively increased as suspensions became more basic. Its isoelectric point was ca. 7 regardless of temperature. The adsorption of hydrogen ions on calcium carbonate particles followed endothermic reaction. This result was verified by continuously measuring pH as adding HCl solution in calcium carbonate suspension. It explained that suspensions' potential was determined by DLVO theory which calculated total interaction energy between particles. Suspensions' total interaction energy was proportional to the value of electrokinetic potential. Furthermore, total interaction energy between particles increased as suspensions' temperature was increased.
The electrokinetic potential of $CaCO_3$, which takes an important part in aquatic system, has been measured and the variation of total energy between $CaCO_3$ particles with the distance of particles was estimated based on DLVO theory. The electrokinetic potential of particles was observed to increase to positive direction as the charge valence of cations which was added to suspension was increased. Also, the total interaction energy between particles was estimated to be more negative as the charge valence of cation was higher and its concentrations was raised. When a mixture of cations with different charge valences was added, the influence of cation with a higher charge valence was more significant on the total interaction energy between particles. When anion was added to the suspension of $CaCO_3$, the total energy estimated by DLVO theory was examined to move to positive direction and the electrokinetic potential of particles became more negative. Likewise cations, the effect of anions on the electrokinetic potential of particles and total interaction energy between them was observed to be proportional to their charge valence and the influence of the mixture of anions with different charge valence became more remarkable as the mixing ratio of the anion with a higher charge valence was increased.
Effect of interfacial electrical conditions on adhesion of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles to PET fabric and the removal of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles from PET fabric, were investigated as functions of pH, electrolyte and ionic strength. The ${\zeta}$ potential of PET fiber and ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles in the electrolyte solution were measured by streaming potential and microelectrophoresis methods respectively. The potential energy of interaction between ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles and PET fabric were calculated by using the heterocoagulation theory for a sphere-plate model. The negative ${\zeta}$ potential of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle and PET fiber increased with pH, and then decreased certain pH and isoelectric points of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles and PET fiber were pH 6.5 and pH 3.5, respectively. The negative ${\zeta}$ potential of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle and PET fiber affected by electrolytes, were relatively high with polyanion electrolytes in solutions and were low with neutral salts. However, at surfactant solution, ${\zeta}$ potential was levelled off. The influence of the ionic strength on the ${\zeta}$ potential of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle was small but the negative ${\zeta}$ potential of PET fiber increased with the ionic strength. In the presence of anionic surfactant, the ${\zeta}$ potential of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle and PET fiber increased regardless of solution conditions. The interaction energy between ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle and PET fabric increased with pH. The interaction energy was relatively high with polyanion electrolytes in solution, and the influence of ionic strength on the interaction energy was small, and the effective thickness of electrical double layer increased with decreasing the ionic strength.
Because the interaction layers that form between U-Mo particles and the Al matrix degrade the thermal properties of U-Mo/Al dispersion fuel, an investigation was undertaken of the undesirable feedback effect between an interaction layer growth and a centerline temperature increase for dispersion fuel. The radial temperature distribution due to interaction layer growth during irradiation was calculated iteratively in relation to changes in the volume fractions, the thermal conductivities of the constituents, and the oxide thickness with the burnup. The interaction layer growth, which is estimated on the basis of the temperature calculations, showed a reasonable agreement with the post-irradiation examination results of the U-Mo/Al dispersion fuel rods irradiated at the HANARO reactor. The U-Mo particle size was found to be a dominant factor that determined the fuel temperature during irradiation. Dispersion fuel with larger U-Mo particles revealed lower levels of both the interaction layer formation and the fuel temperature increase. The results confirm that the use of large U-Mo particles appears to be an effective way of mitigating the thermal degradation of U-Mo/Al dispersion fuel.
In this study, the effects of counter ion valency of the electrolyte on the colloidal repulsion between two parallel cylindrical particles were investigated. Electrostatic interactions of the cylindrical particles were calculated with the variation of counter ion valency. To calculate the electrical repulsive energy working between these two cylindrical particles, Derjaguin approximation was applied. The electrostatic potential profiles were obtained numerically by solving nonlinear Poission-Boltzmann (P-B) equation and calculating middle point potential and repulsive energy working between interacting surfaces. The electrical potential and repulsive energy were influenced by counter ion valency, Debye length, and surface potential. The potential profile and middle point potential decayed with the counter ion valency due to the promoted shielding of electrical charge. On the while, the repulsive energy increased with the counter ion valency at a short separation distance. These behaviors of electrostatic interaction agreed with previous results on planar or spherical surfaces.
This study investigates the effect of particle size on the detergency of particulate soil using an $\alpha-Fe_2O_3$ particle as the model. Monodispersed spherical $\alpha-Fe_2O_3$ particles were prepared by the hydrothermal aging of an acidic $FeCl_3$ and HCl solution. The $\xi$-potential of PET fiber was measured by the streaming potential method. The potential energy of interaction between the particle and fiber was calculated using the heterocoagulation theory for a sphere-plate model. The $\xi$-potential of PET fiber and potential energy of interaction between particles and fiber increased with a decreasing particle size in a DBS solution. However, in the nonionic surfactant solution, the $\xi$-potential signs of PET fiber and $\alpha-Fe_2O_3$ particles were (-) and (+), respectively; there was no repulsive power between the particles and substrate. The adhesion of particles to the fabric increased with increasing particle size in the anionic surfactant solution and their removal from the fabric increased with a decreasing particle size. The adhesion of particles to the fabric and their removal from the fabric was biphasic with a maximum and minimum at 0.1% concentration of the surfactant solution. In the nonionic surfactant solution the adhesion of particles to fabric and their removal from the fabric were greater than the ones in the anionic surfactant DBS solution.
Underwater environmental pollution caused by microplastic particles is considered to be one of the most serious problems in many oceans and countries nearby. Previous academic studies or field technologies tried to remove the micro-sized particles are often energy-consuming and costly, so it is hard to be employed for the actual uses. In this study, the mechanism of removal of micro-sized polyethylene spheres (size in order of 100㎛) using a rising bubble is experimentally investigated. It is found that the particles are either affected by bubble wake, thus translocated close to the water surface, or pushed far away by the surrounding fluid flow, depending on their initial position relative to the bubble. By scrutinizing the visualized behaviors of bubble-particle interaction, we draw the governing parameter, i.e., the polar angle between the particle and the bubble, to determine the effective capturing of the particles with a rising bubble.
Electromechanical properties of REBCO CC tapes are known to be limited by defects (cracks) that form in the brittle REBCO layer. These defects could be inherently acquired during the CC tapes' manufacturing process, such as slitting, and which can be initiated at the CC tapes' edges. If propagated and long enough, they are believed to cause critical current degradation and can substantially decrease the delamination strength of CC tapes. Currently, commercially available CC tapes from various manufacturers utilize different growth techniques for depositing the REBCO layers on the substrates in their CC tapes preparation. Their epitaxial techniques, unfortunately, cannot perfectly avoid the formation of particles, in which sometimes acts as current blocking defects, known as outgrowths. Collective research regarding the composition, size, and formation of these particles for various CC tapes with different deposition techniques are particularly uncommon in a single study. Most importantly, these particles might interact in one way or another to the existing cracks. Therefore, systematic investigation on the interactions between the cracks' development mechanism and particles on the REBCO superconducting layers of practical CC tapes are of great importance, especially in the design of superconducting devices. Here, a proper etching process was employed for the CC tapes to expose and observe the REBCO layers, clearly. The scanning electron microscope, field emission scanning microscope, and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy were utilized to observe the interactions between cracks and particles in various practical CC tapes. Particle compositions were identified whether as non-superconducting or superconducting and in what manner it interacts with the cracks were studied.
