  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review articles, thesis and dissertation on turnover intention of hospital nurses in order to identify overall trends in turnover intention of nurses and suggest strategies for reducing turnover intention. Method: Thirty research papers on turnover intention of nurses were reviewed. Result: These papers were journal articles and thesis regarding nurses who worked in general wards, intensive nursing units, and emergency rooms in hospital. The tools used to measure turnover intention were Lawler (1983), Mobley (1982), and Lee (1995), and others. Most of tools were composed of 1-11 items, with 4-7 point Likert scales. Reported reliability was .55 to .91. The mean score for turnover intention was between 2.40 and 3.85. The important results revealed that job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and stress affected turnover intention of hospital nurses. Conclusion: The findings from this review indicate that to reduce turnover intention for hospital nurses, a nurse manager should increase job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and reduce stress by developing a good culture and work climate. Moreover it is necessary to assess stress and job satisfaction of nurses, and to manage nurses' welfare, including night duty policy, salary, and career ladder.

  • Purpose: This study developed and evaluated a systematic intervention among medical ICU nurses for preventing ventilator-associated pneumonia (hereafter VAP). Methods: A VAP prevention program was proposed based on a literature review, revised to fit the target situation, and validated. It was composed of one-time interventions including education, pamphlets, hand cultures, and a quiz event, as well as repeated interventions such as posters, reminders, posting hand culture results, and performance feedback. A simulated control group pretest-posttest design was used to verify the effectiveness of the VAP control program. The incidence of VAP among ICU patients was measured both during 3 months before (n=80) and during 3 months after (n=75) intervention. Results: The VAP prevention program's effectiveness, with a pre-intervention VAP rate of 17.38 and post-intervention rate of 11.04 per 1,000 ventilator days, showed a clinical tendency to decrease, but the difference was not statistically significant (p=.750). Conclusion: A VAP prevention program of multiple interventions can be useful in decreasing the VAP rate. Given that the monthly decrease in the VAP rate was not considered statistically significant, long-term research needs to be done. Additionally, since this study targeted only nurses, it is suggested that future research targets other health care workers who can influence VAP rates.

  • Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is among the most prevalent and important infectious agents associated with porcine respiratory disease complex. The airway dagame caused by M. hyopneumoniae adversely affect the pulmonary host defense mechanisms and may lead to secondary bacterial infections. Culture is considered to be the "gold standard" for diagnosis but this is a very slow and labor-intensive procedure. Isolation of M. hyopneumoniae is complicated by its fastidious nature and extremely slow growth. Thirty days of incubation may be necessary to detect the organism in primary broth cultures. The purposes of the study were (ⅰ) to develop nested PCR for the detection of M. hyopneumoniae for the detection of M. hyopneumoniae DNA in the formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded lung tissues from experimentally and naturally infected pigs and (ⅱ) to compare the utility of nested PCR with in situ hybridization. • The objective of this study is to induce the importance of manners through the relation between the implementation of manners and strengths of family life in adolescents and to examine positive variants that can enhance healthy family life. A total of 312 questionnaires were used as the final data for this study. The results of the study are as follows. 1. The implementation of manners in adolescents was just above the median. In particular, the lowest sector was in public manners requiring intensive activation measures. The variables influencing the results were sex, self-esteem, level of intimacy with mothers, and relative comparisons. Especially, the level of intimacy with mothers was the most influential indicating the importance of the roles of mothers in manners education. 2. Adolescents seem to be leading a comparatively healthy family life. In the subcategories, bonding among family members appeared to be the most prominent. Nonetheless, little time is spent together among family members. Moreover, psychological variants were very influential in the strengths of family life in adolescents. Considering that implementation of manners contributed to enhancing the strengths of family life, the establishment of a healthy manners culture of adolescents in required.

  • Information center represents an important source which seems very well suited for knowledge management investigation. Information center is knowledge intensive and the use of advanced technology may transform the knowledge of business processes for delivering an unique capabilities in an organization. To exam knowledge management, organization culture, importance of knowledge, and support of information technology were identified as potential predictors of knowledge management support in information center. Three hypotheses have been tested with 43 database management specialist surveys. This study presents that the level of information sharing and knowledge exchange is significantly influenced by the extent support of information technology.

  • Background A patient's overall condition sometimes does not allow for the complete removal of a dead eschar or injured slough in cases involving a pressure-injury skin lesion. This frequently occurs in clinical practice, particularly in bedridden and older patients receiving home care or intensive care. Even after debridement, it is also difficult to manage open exudative wounds in these patients. Nevertheless, when a mature or immature eschar is treated without proper debridement, liquefaction necrosis underneath the eschar or slough tends to reveal a large, open wound with infectious exudates. We hypothesized that if the presence of any bacteria under the eschar can be evaluated and the progression of the presumed infection of the subeschar can be halted or delayed without creating an open wound, the final wound can be small, shallow, and uninfected. Methods Using a punch instrument, we performed 34 viable subeschar tissue cultures with a secure junction between the eschar and the normal skin. Results The bacterial study had 29 positive results. Based on these results and the patient's status, appropriate antibiotics could be selected and administered. The use of suitable antibiotics led to relatively shallow and small exposed wounds. Conclusions This procedure could be used to detect potentially pathogenic bacteria hidden under black or yellow eschars. Since subeschar infections are often accompanied by multidrug-resistant bacteria, the early detection of hidden infections and the use of appropriate antibiotics are expected to be helpful to patients.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate diversity in the situations of multicultural families regarding the education of their children and to suggest rational ways of educating children in multicultural families. The participants in this study were 16 mothers from multicultural families typically characterized by an international marriage in which a Korean male had married a non-Korean female. The data were collected using intensive interviews over a course of three months and were analyzed by grounded theory. The results of this study showed that the participants had difficulty in adapting to the styles of educating children in Korean families and that they could not help their children do homework by themselves due to the limited personal relationships, the shortage of information about educating children, and an lack of organized education programs on Korean culture and history. Thus, they solved these problems by depending on different extracurricular activities and thus incurred a financial burden to support these activities. This led to excessive amounts of time and energy to earn the money to support the activities, which gave them few opportunities to acquire information on educating children by, for example, meeting with others. This explained their dependency on different extracurricular activities so as to solve the problem of their educating children. In an effort to seek ways to break this vicious circle, this study emphasized that policies related to educating children in multicultural families should focus on helping multicultural families strengthen their abilities to educate their children fundamentally.
