  • This paper presents balancing control of a two-wheel mobile robot (TWMR). TWMR is aimed to maintain balance while moving. Although TWMR can be controlled by linear controllers such as PD controller, time-delayed controller is employed for robustness. Performances of PD controllers and time-delayed controllers are compared. Especially, experimental studies on different acceleration estimation for the time-delayed controller are conducted. Performances by different acceleration estimations of the balancing angle, of the position, and of both angle and position are compared empirically.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for verifying the location of the books in working order to enhance the effiency of library management. On open libraries, occasionally people relocate the book by mistake or intention after reading one. In this occasion, the book is assorted as a lost property and cannot be lended to others, even though it is still in the library. To solve this problem, the system we propose takes an image of the book selves by a mobile robot and extracts the classifying information of the book. After comparison between current location of the book and assigned location of the library database, information of the mislocated books is notified to the librarian.

  • This paper presents the motion estimation algorithm on real-time for mobile surveillance robot using particle filter. the particle filter that based on the monte carlo's sampling method, use bayesian conditional probability model which having prior distribution probability and posterior distribution probability. However, the initial probability density was set to define randomly in the most of particle filter. In this paper, we find first the initial probability density using Sum of Absolute Difference(SAD). and we applied it in the partical filter. In result, more robust real-time estimation and tracking system on the randomly moving object was realized in the mobile surveillance robot environments.

  • Existing Bayesian update method using ultrasonic sensors only for mobile robot map building has a problem of the quality of map being degraded in the wall with irregularity, which is caused by the wide beam distribution. For improving this problem, an infrared sensors aided map building method is presented in this paper. Information of obstacle at each region in ultrasonic sensor beam is acquired using the infrared sensors and the information is used to get the confidence of ultrasonic sensor information via fuzzy inference system and genetic algorithm. Combining the resulting confidence with the result of Bayesian update method, an improve map is constructed. The proposed method showed good results in the simulations and experiments.

  • Vision based object recognition in mobile robots has many issues for image analysis problems with neighboring elements in dynamic environments. SURF(Speeded Up Robust Features) is the local feature extraction method of the image and its performance is constant even if disturbances, such as lighting, scale change and rotation, exist. However, it has a difficulty of real-time processing caused by representation of high dimensional vectors. To solve th problem, execution of SURF in GPU(Graphics Processing Unit) is proposed and implemented using CUDA of NVIDIA. Comparisons of recognition rates and processing time for SURF between CPU and GPU by variation of robot velocity and image sizes is experimented.

  • This paper represents an intelligent sensor controller of mobile robot for object recognition in an indoor known environment. A range finder sensor module has been developed by using optic PSD (Position Sensitive Detector) sensor array at a low price. While PSD sensor is cost effective and light weighting, it has switching noise and while noise. To remove these noises, we propose a heuristic filter. For line-based map building, also we proposed advanced Hough transformation and navigation algorism. Some experiments were illustrated for the validity of the developed system.

  • This paper presents design and integration of the ROBHAZ-DT3, which is a newly developed mobile robot system with chained double-track mechanisms. A passive adaptation mechanism equipped between the front and rear body enables the ROBHAZ-DT3 to have good adaptability to uneven terrains including stairs. The passive adaptation mechanism reduces energy consumption when moving on uneven terrain as well as its simplicity in design and remote control, since no actuator is necessary for adaptation. Based on this novel mobile platform, a rescue version of the ROBHAZ-DT3 with appropriate sensors and a semi-autonomous mapping and localization algorithm is developed to participate in the RoboCup2004 US-Open: Urban Search and Rescue Competition. From the various experiments in the realistic rescue arena, we can verify that the ROBHAZ-DT3 is reliable in traveling rugged terrain and the proposed mapping and localization algorithm are effective in the unstructured environment with uneven ground. The another application is an military robot for an EOD(Explosive Ordnance Disposal) and reconnaissance mission. The military version of the ROBHAZ-DT3 with a water disrupter, a thermal scope and a long distance wireless communication device is developed and sent to the area of military tactics in Iraq. Consequently, the feasibility of the military version of ROBHAZ-DT3 is verified.

  • Recently visual servo control is an important feature of an intelligent robot system. In this paper, we presents a Kalman filter approach for estimation of the linear optic flow model which is utilized in the visual servoing of a mobile robot. The proposed method is also compared with the conventional least mean square method via computer simulation.

  • A leader-follower robot system using low cost small mobile robots has been developed. Sine the developed mobile robot is made of widely used low cost parts, it can be built easily and fastly. Characteristics of the developed sensor array composed of seven low-cost infrared(IR) distance sensors has been investigated, and a positioning algorithm of the reader robot is proposed. Through a series of experiments, it has been verified that the proposed algorithm can detect the position of the reader robot well.
