  • The Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) is an international organization established to encourage scientific evaluation, dissemination of evidence-based information, and appropriate clinical integration of complementary therapies (http://www.Integrativeonc.org.). Practice Guidelines were developed by the authors listed below and by the Executive Committee of the Society for Integrative Oncology, which approved this document. Guidelines are a work in progress; they will be updated as needed and are available on the SIO Web site as well: www.IntegrativeOnc.org.

What Is Integrative Medicine?

  • The demand for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is increasing worldwide. High-technology medicine is not always effective and is often accompanied by neglected self-care and high cost. Also, conventional medicine has become dependent on expensive technological solutions to health problems. Integrated medicine is not simply a synonym for complementary medicine. It involves the understanding of the interaction of the mind, body, and spirit and how to interpret this relationship in the dynamics of health and disease. Integrative medicine shifts the orientation of the medical practice from a disease-based approach to a healing-based approach. In South Korea, CAM education was first provided 20 years ago, and integrative medicine is becoming part of the current mainstream medicine. Increasing numbers of fellowships in integrative medicine are being offered in many academic health centers in the U.S. Also, it has emerged as a potential solution to the American healthcare crisis and chronic diseases, which are bankrupting the economy. It provides care that is patient-centered, healing-oriented, emphasizes the therapeutic relationship, and uses therapeutic approaches originating from conventional and alternative medicine.

The Effects of an Integrative Art Program on Young Children's Emotional Intelligence and Their Pro-Social Behaviors (만 4-5세 유아의 감성지능과 친사회적 행동 증진을 위한 유아통합미술활동프로그램의 효과)

  • This study was aimed to develop an integrative art program that incorporates both emotional and pro-social components for young children (age, 4-5 years). Furthermore, the effectiveness of this integrative program was examined with 39 young children who were divided into the experimental group and the control group of this study. To the experimental group, the integrative art program of interest in this study was provided over 8 weeks. The children of the control group were provided a similar program during the same period. To measure the levels of young children's emotional intelligence and those of their pro-social behavior were assessed by using the emotional intelligence questionnaire and the children's pro-social behavior assessment scale to collect the data. The analysis of covariance by SPSS 18.0 indicated that the young children from the experimental group exhibited higher total scores for emotional intelligence and pro-social behaviors than their counterparts from the control group. The results indicate that the integrative art program of interest in this study improved the young children's emotional intelligence and their pro-social behaviors. Along with main results of this study, implications for research and practice were discussed.

The Development of Integrative Exercise Program for the Elderly (노인의 건강증진을 위한 통합 운동프로그램 개발)

  • Purpose: The Purpose of this research was to develop the integrative exercise program for the elderly. Method: The first step was to survey the elder's health status and general health problems. The second step was to design the exercise type, intensity, time and frequency. Result: 1. Elders who implement the integrative exercise program had weaker health status, lower physical performance and more depression than any other places. 2. The integrative exercise program developed the preparation stage composed of stretching and Yudongkong-Ki exercise, the central stage was composed of range of motion exercise, muscle strength exercise and aerobic exercise with favorite and popular Korean music. The finishing stage was composed of joint rounding and Yudongkong-Ki exercise. The exercise intensity was RPE(rating perceived exertion) 10-11, maximal pulse rate 40-60%, duration started from 20min to 50min and frequency is 2-3times/wk. Conclusion: The integrative exercise program developed by the researcher is tailored exercise that is more applicable to individual cases in community settings. Eventually, the program is safely applicable to the elders, and is expected to improve the elders' physical function and quality of life.

Integrative Home Economics Curriculum Development from a Critical Science Perspective through Deliberation (숙의를 통한 비판과학 관점의 통합 지향적 가정교과 교육과정 개발)

  • This study developed an integrative curriculum design plan for Home Economics through a deliberation method. This study established a research framework to integrate the deliberation models of Schwab, Walker, and Reid that inherited the intellectual tradition of curriculum deliberation along with the practical reasoning process of Brown and Paolucci from a critical science perspective. The practical research problem was formulated as "What should be done to develop a Home Economics integrative curriculum?" To address this practical research problem, deliberation with deliberators of each small, medium, and large groups was processed for the development of integrative curriculum design plans. An initial proposal was developed from small group deliberation processes. An initial proposal was examined and an alternative plan was developed from medium group deliberation processes. An alternative plan and its consequence were re-examined from large group deliberation processes. The authors finalized a proposal organized on four valued ends of self-formation, intersubjectivity, social action, and life skills. A practical problem focused integrative curriculum was developed and proposed to pursue the four valued ends. The suggested final practical problem focused curriculum demonstrates the power of Home Economics to contribute to the advancement of individuals, families, and society as well as the practical empowerment of students.

The Relationships among Integrative Creativity, Creativity in Scientific Humor, and Perceptions of Educational Benefits for Making Scientific Humor of Elementary Students (초등학생의 통합 창의성, 과학 유머 창의성, 과학 유머 만들기의 교육적 효과에 대한 인식의 관계)

  • This study investigated the relationships among 'integrative creativity', 'creativity in scientific humor', and 'perceptions of educational benefits for making scientific humor' of elementary students. To do this, five graders (n=42) at an elementary school and five graders (n=38) at a gifted science education institutes in Seoul were selected. Tests for 'integrative creativity', 'creativity in scientific humor', and 'perceptions of educational benefits for making scientific humor' were then administered. Analysis of the results revealed that the scores for some subcategories of 'creativity in scientific humor' were positively correlated with those for 'integrative creativity', especially for 'creative motivation (e.g., curiosity and playfulness)' and 'creative potency (e.g., knowledge, imagination, sensitivity, flexibility, and fluency)' more than 'creative attitude'. The subcategories of 'integrated creativity' that were significantly related to 'creativity in scientific humor' were somewhat different according to the subcategories of 'creativity in scientific humor'. The scores for all subcategories of 'perception of educational benefits for making scientific humor' were not significantly correlated with those for almost all subcategories of 'integrative creativity' and 'creativity in scientific humor'. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • Adiponectin (Ad), a 30 kDa molecule, is an anti-diabetic adipokine; although derived from adipose tissue, it performs numerous activities in various other tissues. It binds to its own receptors, namely adiponectin receptor 1(AdipoR1), adiponectin receptor 2 (AdipoR2), and T-cadherin (CDH13). Ad plays several roles, especially as a regulator. It modulates lipid and glucose metabolism and promotes insulin sensitivity. This demonstrates that Ad has a robust correlation with fat metabolism. Furthermore, although Ad is not in direct contact with other tissues, including the skin, it can be delivered to them by diffusion or secretion via the endocrine system. Recently it has been reported that Ad can impact skin cell biology, underscoring its potential as a therapeutic biomarker of skin diseases. In the present review, we have discussed the association between skin cell biology and Ad. To elaborate further, we described the involvement of Ad in the biology of various types of cells in the skin, such as keratinocytes, fibroblasts, melanocytes, and immune cells. Additionally, we postulated that Ad could be employed as a therapeutic target to maintain skin homeostasis.

The Implications of Integrative Arts Therapy Approach in University Education in the Age of Human and Disaster

  • The educational environment of the era of age of uncertainty and human and disaster, where nothing is predictable, so it is bringing about many changes. The purpose of this study is to suggest the implications of Integrative arts therapy in the educational field of unpredictable times as a way to move the minds of people living in various educational changes. As for the research method, the characteristics of the integrative arts therapy shown in the previous studies were examined through the literature method, and then through the cases in the modern education environment practiced we propose three things. First, in the field of university education, students should have an integrative arts therapy approach in terms of teaching methods, and also, second, in order to recover from failure and frustration, continuous gratitude sharing training to discover and acknowledge positivity in the situation by changing perspectives should improve students' self-esteem and self-efficacy. Third, professors should play the role of facilitators and also coaches in knowledge transfer. Therefore the coaching process should be integrated into the process of sustainable education when the integrative arts therapy is approached from the pedagogical curriculum.

  • Objective : Sensory integration is the organization for sensation for use. The purpose of this study is to carry out the sensory integrative intervention for the mental retardation with child and to examine change of child's balance and breath abilities. Methods : The study performed from 25 May to 13 Autumn, 2009. The design is AB design(baseline 3sessions, intervention 21sessions) of single-subject research design. We carried out the sensory integrative intervention(3 sessions per week) for baseline period and the sensory integrative intervention(3 sessions per week) with sensory diet every day for intervention period. Results : The results of the sensory integrative intervention with sensory diet had positive effects for child's breathe and balance. Conclusion : The occupational therapists recognize the effects of the sensory integrative intervention with sensory diet and need to recommend for the family of child with disability.

Diversity and Polymorphism in AHL-Lactonase Gene (aiiA) of Bacillus

  • To explore bacterial diversity for elucidating genetic variability in acylhomoserine lactone (AHL) lactonase structure, we screened 800 bacterial strains. It revealed the presence of a quorum quenching (QQ) AHL-lactonase gene (aiiA) in 42 strains. These 42 strains were identified using rrs (16S rDNA) sequencing as Bacillus strains, predominantly B. cereus. An in silico restriction endonuclease (RE) digestion of 22 AHL lactonase gene (aiiA) sequences (from NCBI database) belonging to 9 different genera, along with 42 aiiA gene sequences from different Bacillus spp. (isolated here) with 14 type II REs, revealed distinct patterns of fragments (nucleotide length and order) with four REs; AluI, DpnII, RsaI, and Tru9I. Our study reflects on the biodiversity of aiiA among Bacillus species. Bacillus sp. strain MBG11 with polymorphism (115Alanine > Valine) may confer increased stability to AHL lactonase, and can be a potential candidate for heterologous expression and mass production. Microbes with ability to produce AHL-lactonases degrade quorum sensing signals such as AHL by opening of the lactone ring. The naturally occurring diversity of QQ molecules provides opportunities to use them for preventing bacterial infections, spoilage of food, and bioremediation.
