  • Condition monitoring technology was applied for an air compressor lubricating system to achieve a proactive maintenance, which could prevent a catastrophic failure and detect root causes of the conditional failure of the system. For this work, various types of wear monitoring technology were used and compared with the results of vibration and temperature measurements. The Results generally showed that every technology has a limitation to failure detection, and integrated-based condition monitoring should be performed for the best results. In this work, an idea for the implementing integrated wear monitoring was suggested and demonstrated.

  • One of the important trends for condition monitoring in the 21st century is the development of smart sensors that will permit the cost-effective continuous monitoring of key machine equipments. In this study, an integrated in-line oil monitoring sensor assigned for continuous in situ monitoring multiple parameters of oil performance is presented. The sensor estimates oil deterioration based on the information about chemical degradation, total contamination, water content of oil and oil temperature. The oil oxidation is estimated by "chromatic ratio", total contamination is measured by the changes in optical density of oil in three optical wave-bands ('Red', 'Green' and 'Blue') and water content is evaluated as relative saturation of oil by water. In order to evaluate the sensor's effectiveness, the sensor was applied to several used oil samples in steel making industry and the results were compared with those measured by standard test methods.

  • To analyze influences under open fault conditions in switching devices, an integrated simulation and condition monitoring scheme for a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based variable speed grid-connected wind turbine system are presented. Among various faults in power electronics components, the open fault in switching devices may arise when the switches are destructed by an accidental over current, or a fuse for short protection is blown out. Under such a faulty condition, the grid-side inverter as well as the generator-side converter does not operate normally, producing an increase of current harmonics, and a reduction in output and efficiency. As an effective way for a condition monitoring of generation system by online basis without requiring any diagnostic apparatus, the estimation schemes for generated voltage, flux linkage, and stator resistance are proposed and the validity of the proposed scheme is proved through comparative simulations.

  • Integrated condition monitoring is required to monitor effectively the machine conditions since machine failures could not be monitored accurately by any single measurement parameter. Application of various condition monitoring techniques is therefore preferred in many cases in order to diagnosis the machine condition. However it inevitably requires lots of maintenance cost and sometimes it could be proved to over-maintenance unnecessarily. This could happen especially when one measurement parameter closely correlates to another. Therefore correlation analysis of various monitoring parameters has to be performed to improve the reliability of diagnosis. In this work, Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyze the correlation between condition monitoring parameters of an over-loaded machine system where the vibration, wear and temperature were monitored simultaneously. The result showed that Pearson correlation coefficient could be regarded as a good measure for evaluating the availability of condition monitoring technology.

  • We present the web-based remote monitoring system using distributed object technology. In order to provide the desired functionality, the system has used CORBA(Common Object Request Architecture) and Java Servlet to implement the integrated distributed object environment. It converts the existing standalone machine monitoring system into web-based machine monitoring system. It consists of applet program, CORBA server and CORBA client. The usefulness of our system will be illustrated by the application to ICM(Integrated Condition Monitoring) System developed by KIST Tribology Center.

  • Abstract - An integrated condition monitoring algorithm based on an expert system was implemented in this work in order to monitor effectively the machine conditions. The knowledge base was consisted of numeric data which meant the posterior probability of each measurement parameter for the representative machine failures. Also the inference engine was constructed as a series of statistical process, where the probable machine fault was inferred by a mapping technology of pattern recognition. The proposed algorithm was, through the user interface, applied for an air compressor system where the temperature, vibration and wear properties were measured simultaneously. The result of the case study was found fairly satisfactory in the diagnosis of the machine condition since the predicted result was well correlated to the machine fault occurred.

  • In this paper, studies on application cases of machine condition monitoring using oil sensors are reviewed. Owing to rapid industrial advancements, maintenance strategies play a crucial role in reducing the cost of downtime and improving system reliability. Consequently, machine condition monitoring plays an important role in maintaining operation stability and extending the period of usage for various machines. Machine condition monitoring through oil analysis is an effective method for assessing a machine's condition and providing early warnings regarding a machine's breakdown or failure. Among the three prevalent methods, the online analysis method is predominantly employed because this method incorporates oil sensors in real-time and has several advantages (such as prevention of human errors). Wear debris sensors are widely employed for implementing machine condition monitoring through oil sensors. Furthermore, various types of oil sensors are used in different machines and systems. Integrated oil sensors that can measure various oil attributes by incorporating a single sensor are becoming popular. By monitoring wear debris, machine condition monitoring using oil sensors is implemented for engines, automotive transmission, tanks, armored vehicles, and construction equipment. Additionally, such monitoring systems are incorporated in aircrafts such as passenger airplanes, fighter airplanes, and helicopters. Such monitoring systems are also employed in chemical plants and power plants for managing overall safety. Furthermore, widespread application of oil condition diagnosis requires the development of diagnostic programs.

  • Condition monitoring technologies allow achieving this goal by minimizing downtime through the integrated planning and scheduling of repairs indicated by condition monitoring techniques. Thermal runaways induced by conduction problems deteriorate insulating material and cause disruptive dielectric discharges resulting in arcing faults. Therefore, having the ability to directly measure the temperature of the contacts while in service will provide more information to determine the true condition of the equipment. It allows connective measures to be taken to prevent upcoming failure. Continuous temperature monitoring and event recording provides information on the energized equipment's response to normal and emergency conditions. On-line temperature monitoring helps to coordinate equipment specifications and ratings, determine the real limits of the monitored equipment and optimize facility operations. Using wireless technique eliminates any need for special cables and wires with lower installation costs if compared to other types of online condition monitoring equipment. In addition, wireless temperature monitoring works well under difficult conditions in strategically important locations. Wireless technology for on -line condition monitoring of energized equipment is applicable both as stand alone system and with an interface for power quality monitoring system. The paper presents the results of wireless temperature monitoring: of electrical equipment at a power plant.
