  • Energy losses through windows and doors are big problems in the construction industry. For glass only, it has takes the largest portion of mass from window assembly and it responsible for 24 ~ 45% of energy loss from total building energy loss. Insulating glass unit should maintain their basic functions during their working life in order to contribute positively for global warming issue. There have been many research works for improving insulating glass unit durability. But it is not easy job to fulfill the requirements because insulating glass units composed of many components. So, overall it is required to have right qualify control procedures starting from material selection to fabrication, shipping and installation to the customer site. In this report, we have reviewed the durability of insulating glass unit made from different grades of sealing materials based on globally accepted industry codes such as EN1279. ASTM E 2190 and Locally available code. KS L 2003. The result showed that there is a relationship between the mechanical properties of insulating glass 2nd sealant and the durability of the units.

  • Energy saving standard for buildings are strengthened, the application of exterior insulation finishing system and thickness of insulation materials are increasing. Most buildings with exterior insulation finishing system is applied organic insulating material. Organic insulating material have workability, economic feasibility, reduction in construction cost, and excellent thermal insulation performance. However, Organic insulating material is very vulnerable to heat, so when a fire occurs, rapid fire spread and toxic gas are generated, causing many casualties. Inorganic insulating material can be non-combustible performance, but it is heavy and has low thermal insulation performance. Mineral wool has higher thermal insulation performance than other types of inorganic insulating material, but mineral wool is disadvantageous to workability and vulnerable to moisture. Glass bubble are highly resistant to water and chemically stable substances. In addition, the density of the glass bubble is very low and the particles are spherical, fluidity is improved by the ball bearing effect. Glass bubbles can be used with cement-based ino rganic insulating material to impro ve the weight and thermal insulatio n perfo rmance o f cement-based inorganic insulation. This study produced a inorganic insulating materials were manufactured using cement-based materials and glass bubble. In order to evaluate the insulation performance and flame retardant performance of cement-based super light-weight inorganic insulating materials using with glass bubble, insulation performance or flame retardant and non-combustible performance were evaluated after manufacturing insulating materials using micro cement and two types of glass bubbles. From the test result, Increasing the mixing ratio of glass bubbles improved the insulation performance of cement-based super light-weight inorganic insulating materials, and when the mixing ratio of glass bubbles was 10%, it sho wed sufficient flame retardant and no n-co mbustible perfo rmance.

  • We investigated the structure of an ultra-thin insulating board with low thermal conductivity along z-axis, which was based on the idea of void layers created during the glass infiltration process for the zero-shrinkage low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology. An alumina and four glass powders were chosen and prepared as green sheets by the tape casting method. After comparison of the four glass powders, bismuth glass was selected for the experiment. Since there is no notable reactivity between alumina and bismuth glass, alumina was selected as the supporting additive in glass layers. With 2.5 vol% of alumina powder, glass green sheets were prepared and stacked alternately with alumina green sheet to form the 'alumina/glass (including alumina additive)/alumina' structure. The stacked green sheets were sintered into an insulating substrate. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the additive alumina formed supporting bridges in void layers. The depth and number of the stacking layers were varied to examine the insulating property. The lowest thermal conductivity obtained was 0.23 W/mK with a $500-{\mu}m-thick$ substrate.

  • Physical and chemical properties of waste glass, such as bottle glass, plate glass, and LCD glass were investigated to test the feasibility of starting materials for the production of high quality foamed glass for insulating grade construction material without pre-treatments such as cleaning, and waste removals. For this purpose, chemical analysis, thermal analysis, crystalline analysis, and rheological analysis including viscosity were proceeded and the preparation of foamed glass under the qualitative conditions obtained from these various analysis was also attempted. Overall results of various analysis and investigations for these waste glass showed that waste bottle glass and plate glass have high possivility of use as feed materials for the production of foamed glass.

  • Especially, Fiber glass Reinforced Plastics(FRP) is the best composite insulating material which has been so far. Therefore, it's worthy of notice to investigate on the corona electrified composite insulating material by surface condition. And then some other materials will be focussed on. In this study, charge decay were measured with charging-time and grid voltage on FRP composite material surface in order to analyze the mechanism. As a result we have studied that the way of the composite glass fiber(GF) and Polymer and the condition of the contaminated surface was different. In case of the GF is mixed with vertical, charge decay speed is fast because the charge is easily leaked. On the other hand, the surface charge decay speed is depend on conductive or insulated of the contaminant.

  • From extensive measurements of the resistance and the dynamic resistance as functions of magnetic field and temperature, we find that the transport in the insulating state beyond the superconductor-insulator (S-I) transition is dominated by bosons(Cooper pairs and/or vortices) and cannot be described by the theory of the fermionic insulating phase. The maximum of the magnetoresistance at B = B$_m$ and the following negative slope in R(B) with increasing field can be explained by the crossover from the "Bose-glass" to the "Fermi-glass" phase as suggested by Paalanen, Hebard, and Ruel. The zero bias peak in dv/dl for biases below the characteristic voltage V$_c$ (or current $I_c$), gives a clue for the assumption of the "dirty boson" model which states that the insulating state above the critical magnetic field is the phase where Cooper pairs are localized due to the Coulomb blockade with a nonvanishing order parameter. The shift to a lower value of the critical magnetic field by overlaying thin Au layer, which is known as a strong spin-orbit scatterer, also supports the bosonic nature of the S-I transition.

  • To improve dielectric and mechanical properties of insulating composite by plasma surface treatment, new plasma surface treatment process is designed with concentric and hemi-circle electrodes system, the plasma, which is generated between anode and cathode, is induced to the upper side of the electrode system and treats the surface of the insulators. The optimal surface treatment condition is that pressure : 0.5[torr], flux density 100[gauss], discharge current : 500[mA] and treatment time : 3 minutes. The composite filled with glass cloth surface-treated by plasma shows the improvement in electric and mechanical properties, comparing non- and coupling agent-treated samples.

  • Laminated glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites were applied to an insulating structure of a magnet system for a nuclear fusion device. Decreased inter-laminar strength by a strong repulsive force between coils which is induced a problem of structural integrity in laminated GFRPs. Therefore, it is important to investigate the inter-laminar characteristics of laminated GFRP composites in order to assure more reliable design and better structural integrity. Three types of the laminated GFRP composites using a high voltage insulating materials were fabricated according to each molding process. To evaluate the grade of the fabricated composites, mechanical tests, such as hardness, tensile and compressive tests, were carried out. The autoclave molding composites satisfied almost of the mechanical properties reguested at the G10 class standard, but the vacuum impregnation (VPI) and Prepreg composites did not.

  • There is a big move to build zero-energy buildings in the form of passive houses that reduce energy waste worldwide. Korea has set a goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 37% by 2030 through the activation of green buildings, such as strengthening the energy levels of new buildings and improving the energy efficiency of existing buildings. The use of insulation with high insulation performance is one of the key technologies to realize this, and vacuum insulation is the next generation insulation that blocks the energy flow of the building. In this study, we measured the bonding structure of dry and wet processing glass fiber core materials and compared the insulation performance of vacuum insulation panel. In addition, the insulation performance of vacuum insulation panel was measured according to the thickness of the laminated core. It can be confirmed that the lamination structure of the core and the lamination thickness are important factors for the heat insulating performance of the vacuum insulating panel.
