There always exist nonzero inspection errors whether inspectors are humans or automatic inspection machines. Inspection errors can be categorized by two types, type I error and type II error, and they can be regarded as either a constant or a random variable. Under the assumption that two types of random inspection errors are distributed with the "uniform" distribution on a half-open interval starting from zero, it was proved that inspectors overestimate any given fraction defective with the probability more than 50%, if and only if the given fraction defective is smaller than a critical value, which depends upon only the ratio of a type II error over a type I error. In addition, it was also proved that the probability of overestimation approaches one hundred percent as a given fraction defective approaches zero. If these critical phenomena hold true for any error distribution, then it might have great economic impact on commercial inspection plans due to the unfair overestimation and the recent trend of decreasing fraction defectives in industry. In this paper, we deal with the same overestimation problem, but assume a "symmetrical triangular" distribution expecting better results since our triangular distribution is closer to a normal distribution than the uniform distribution. It turns out that the overestimation phenomenon still holds true even for the triangular error distribution.

Borescopes facilitate the inspection of areas inside machines and systems that are not directly accessible for visual inspection. They offer real-time, up-close access to confined and hard-to-access spaces without having to dismantle or destructure the object under inspection. Borescopes are ideal instruments for routine maintenance, quality inspection and monitoring of systems and structures. The main application being fault or defect detection, it is useful to have measuring capability to quantify object dimensions in a target area. High-end borescopes use multi-optic solutions to provide measurement information of viewed objects. Multi-optic solutions can provide accurate measurements at the expense of structural complexity and cost increase. Measuring functionality is often unavailable in low-end, single camera borescopes. In this paper, a single camera measurement solution that enables the size estimation of viewed objects is proposed. The proposed solution computes and overlays a scaled grid of known spacing value over the screen view, enabling the human inspector to estimate the size of the objects in view. The proposed method provides a simple means of measurement that is applicable to low-end borescopes with no built-in measurement capability.

In this paper, a three-phase high-voltage converter (HVC), in which the main structure of each phase is composed of a cascaded PWM rectifier (CPR) and cascaded inverter (CI), is studied. A high-voltage grid is the input of the HVC. In order to ensure proper operation of the HVC, the control method should achieve output voltage sharing (OVS) among the rectifiers in the CPR, OVS among the inverters in the CI, and high power factor. Master-slave direct-current control (MDCC) is used to control the CPR. The ability of the control system to prevent interference is strong when using MDCC. The CI is controlled by three-loop control, which is composed of an outer common-output-voltage loop, inner current loops and voltage sharing loops. Simulation results show low total harmonic distortion (THD) in the HVC input currents and good OVS in both the CPR and CI.
The inspection machine in SMT (Surface Mount Technology) line detects the assembly defects such as missing, misalignment, loosing, or tombstone. We propose a new method to classify the defect types of chip components by processing the image of PCB. Two original images are obtained from horizontal lighting and vertical lighting. The image of the component is divided into two soldering regions and one packaging region. The features are extracted by appling the PCA (Principle Component Analysis) to each region. The MLP (Multilayer Perceptron) and SVM (Support Vector Machine) are then used to classify the defect types by learning. The experimental results are presented to show the usefulness of the proposed method.
We consider the determinant of the most economical target value through the sampling inspection by two consecutive machines. The machine sequence is fixed as products have to be processed by machine 1 first and then by machine 2 next, In this paper we assume that if quality of a unit is lower than inspection lower specification limited then the goods is not accepted, otherwise it is accepted. And we assume that the quality characteristics is larger-the-better characteristics and its distribution is the normal distribution whose standard deviation is known. This paper ends up with an numerical example by using the total expected profit function model that consider the scales profits inspection costs and material costs. And we analyze the variation of the total expected profit by changing coefficients of the functions.
We propose a path planning method to decrease a inspection lead time of line scan camera in SMT(surface mount technology) in-line system. The inspection window area of printed circuit board should be minimized to consider the FOV(field of view) of line scan camera so that line scan inspector is going to find a optimal solution of path planning. We propose one of the hierarchical clustrering algorithm for a given board. Comparative simulation results are presented to verify the usefulness of proposed method.
A coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is a computer-controlled measuring device that uses a probe to obtain measurements on a manufactured part's surface. CMM's have been very popular over traditional hard gauges due to their flexibility, accuracy, and ease of automated inspection. This paper considers the use of a CMM for the inspection of gears. We compare the inspection capability of a CMM and that of a gear-specific measuring machine. The result of this paper may benefit gear manufacturing companies in their dimensional quality assurance activities, especially for special type gears and for large-scale gears which are not measurable by gear-specific measuring machines.

Linear motors has been developed for factory automation, transportation applications, among other applications. As the trend toward compact sizes in micro electronic products progresses, the required motor drives in these applications need to be downsized with increased power densities. It appears that the winding of miniature linear motors is the most awkward part to be scaled down from conventional motor designs when miniaturizing. This paper presents an alternative design for slotless linear motors. A novel flexible printed circuit winding has been applied to obtain a simplified but qualified result. Having explained the prototyping and inspection, a discussion is given to examine the achievement of this study.
In this paper, a load balancing problem among operators is considered, when one or more identical machines can be assigned to an operator. The operations of a job are separated into three categories : machine-controlled elements, operator-controlled elements and machine/operator-controlled elements. Machining or forming operations are included into the first category. The second category includes inspection and moving to another machine, and the last category includes setup and loading/unloading operation. The objective is to balance the workloads among operators under the constraints of available machine-time and operator-time. A hierarchical heuristic solution procedure is suggested for allocating jobs to each machine and allocating machines to each operator. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated with various data set.

Construction inspection is a crucial stage that ensures that all contractual requirements of a construction project are verified. The construction inspection capabilities among state highway agencies have been greatly affected due to budget reduction. As a result, efficient inspection practices such as risk-based inspection are required to optimize the use of limited resources without compromising inspection quality. Automated prioritization of textual requirements according to their criticality would be extremely helpful since contractual requirements are typically presented in an unstructured natural language in voluminous text documents. The current study introduces a novel model for predicting the risk level of requirements using machine learning (ML) algorithms. The ML algorithms tested in this study included naïve Bayes, support vector machines, logistic regression, and random forest. The training data includes sequences of requirement texts which were labeled with risk levels (such as very low, low, medium, high, very high) using the fuzzy logic systems. The fuzzy model treats the three risk factors (severity, probability, detectability) as fuzzy input variables, and implements the fuzzy inference rules to determine the labels of requirements. The performance of the model was examined on labeled dataset created by fuzzy inference rules and three different membership functions. The developed requirement risk prediction model yielded a precision, recall, and f-score of 78.18%, 77.75%, and 75.82%, respectively. The proposed model is expected to provide construction inspectors with a means for the automated prioritization of voluminous requirements by their importance, thus help to maximize the effectiveness of inspection activities under resource constraints.
