  • The purpose of this study is to identify the teaching professionalism of the two teachers for secondary science-gifted students in perspective of teaching orientations. Both teachers have been taught biology to secondary science-gifted students for more than six years and they have received in-service training in gifted education. Teachers' orientations were investigated through in-depth interviews and observing lessons. For the data collection, videotapes were recorded during two lessons and two in-depth interviews for each participant were conducted. All recorded data were carefully transcribed and analyzed. Some unique characteristics of teaching were identified from the class instruction of each participant. Both teachers revealed 'Open Inquiry' orientation. This was reflected by their educational goals and beliefs that they should help science-gifted students to grow themselves as scientists by enhancing their inquisitiveness and creative problem solving ability. However, each teacher had shown different teaching orientations such as 'Academic Rigor' and 'Discovery' that seemed to have influence on the level or the range of subject matter covered in the classes. Teachers' science teaching orientations have been changed by their subject of teaching and their experiences in teaching the gifted. In the process, teachers' educational philosophy about gifted education plays an important role in teaching orientation. Based on the ongoing teachers' efforts for enhancing his/her professionalism, the teachers seemed to critically review theoretical knowledge of the science teachers in gifted education through self-reflection on their own teaching methods. When teacher's educational philosophy about gifted education was established and internalized, science teaching orientations in teaching practice seemed to be consistent with his/her goal of teaching.

  • The earth science curriculum and textbooks of the secondary school in South Korea and North Korea were analysed comparatively with the modified TIMSS curriculum frameworks. In the secondary school of North Korea, earth science is not provided with separate subject, but partly taught in geography. Geography is taught by two hour per week in the first to fifth grade of secondary school. Especially the first and the fifth grade geography are deeply related to earth science. The major aim of earth science education in South Korea is to develop creative problem solver having with interest and curiosity in searching natural phenomena and with basic science concepts and inquiry process skills. But on the other hand the aim of geography education of North Korea is to cultivate communist revolutionists who are faithful to IL-Sung Kim and Jung-IL Kim. In both Koreas the category of 'earth feature' and 'earth process' are dealt a lot, but 'earth in the universe' is rarely taught in North Korea, which suggests that separate subject of astronomy is instructed in the North. Generally the scope and sequence of earth science of North Korea comes under those of middle school of South Korea. Especially discrepancy in level of meteorology and astronomy area between North and South Korea is great.

  • This study compares the perceptions of elementary gifted child and science teacher in a science class for the gifted. In order to explore the research problem, students and teachers answered a written semi-structured questionnaire and participated in interviews regarding the gifted science class. The data was collected and analyzed. Science teachers recognized the characteristics of a good science class, especially in terms of educational content and teaching methodology. First, they suggested promoting inquiry skills, presenting a challenging task in atypical topic selection, student-centered curriculum, and controlling the pace of learning to recognize individual differences. Second, in terms of the science class skills and attitudes category, teachers recommended raising mutual satisfaction through vigorous interaction within a permissible atmosphere. Finally, science teachers need to strive for continued professional growth. Gifted children, meanwhile, want to investigate a wide range of topics without time constraints. Additionally, they may have to explore challenging topics further. They prefer to act like scientists in that they enjoy group activities, communication and cooperation. In particular, they want to be evaluated by others in a totally embedded assessment. Gifted children also expect teachers to understand the life circumstances and needs of the students. In addition, they asked for teachers to respect individual experiments and to show them how to safely use new equipment or research methods. As a result, gifted children and science teachers have to recognize the differences of opinion concerning a good science class for the gifted. This study can help formulate strategies to establish quality management of materials in gifted science classes.

  • It is important to make students do research for oneself. But the practice of inquiry activity is not easy in the mathematics education field. Intellectual curiosities of students are unpredictable. It is important to meet intellectual curiosities of students. We could get a sequence in the process solving a problem. This sequence was expressed in a form of the recurrence relation $a_n=a_{n-1}+a_{n-3}$ ($n{\geq}4$), $a_1=a_2=a_3=1$. We tried to look for the general terms of this sequence. This sequence is similar to Fibonacci sequence, but the process finding the general terms is never similar to Fibonacci sequence. We can get two general terms expressed in different form after our a great deal of effort. We hope that this study will give the spot of education energy.

  • The objective of this study is to examine the cognitive process that undergoes a middle student’s conceptual change about the universe by the cognitive conflict, using science history materials as a teaching strategy. Four eighth graders were selected and classified by three cognitive level. Students were interviewed and conducted to an inquiry activities regarding their viewpoint about the universe after each class, and their conceptual change patterns were analysed from pre-test and post-test. This study showed that each student held dissimilar astronomical preconceptions and various misconceptions about celestial motion. Students at the formal operational stage and transitional stage experienced the conceptual change from geocentricism to heliocentricism by instructional model upon the science history materials. Student at the concrete operational stage had either unscientific conception, no conception, or could not have a conceptual change even when being presented with an environment that arouses cognitive conflict ($R^2$: Phase change of Venus and its Rise and set time). They ended up having a cognitive change from geocentricism to heliocentricism by solving another problem ($R^2$: Relation between visible diameter and position of Mars). After the instruction, a conceptual achievement progress was reported with a $10\%$ improvement. Therefore, the instruction model based upon science history was effective on student’s scientific conceptual change.

  • I looked into hypochondria, an increasing social problem, in psychological and Korean medical aspects and these conclusions were made through 16 clinical cases based on HyungSang medicine. Hypochondria is a disorder that is caused when feeble minded person could not fight the reality. It is caused by deficiency and stagnation of Ki which connects body and mind. In Korean medical view point mind and body is the same. Particularly, in HyungSang medicine believes that everyone's way of life and how to deal with situation differs according to the characteristics and traits. HyungSang medical treatment in hypochondria Mind and body is in line with each other, so manifestation of mental activity is caused by deficiency of combining action of vital Ki. Medication that helps combining force of vital Ki is needed. As the way people handle situation is different, according to characteristics and trait it is valid to differ counselling and treatment according to the criteria. Looking at 16 case studies of hypochondria patients, in gender wise, woman with astriction quality and engaging in much mental activities are more vulnerable. In view of vital substances, more cases were found in Jung type and Ki type. In animal type, bird and reptile type were, and in six meridian type, Tae yang, Yang Myong, Tae Eum and Kwolum type were more susceptible. Especially, cases of Indang being stagnant was noticeable. Moreover, the pulse activated parallel with the Heart which is a leading organ that manifests mental activity and controls seven emotions, so many cases were found that was far from Heart-Small intestine and Heart-Gall Bladder relationship.

  • The proportion of rebar factory manufacturing which has been settled down in Korea recently seems to increase because of their strength such as high decreasing rate of rebar loss and manufacturing accuracy and the external factors such as an increase of downtown projects and a decrease of skilled workers. However, factory manufacturing using straight rebars causes a certain amount of rebar loss and an environmental problem including $CO_2$ emissions. To solve these problems, Bar in coil (BIC) has been introduced; however its application is very rare because it has not been produced so far in Korea and manufacturing machines of BIC are very expensive. Also, although BIC's application is expected to expand due to its strengths, few analysis of its application has been conducted. Therefore in this study, analysis of the BIC's characteristics and the influence to the rebar manufacturing industry are conducted for the advancement of rebar work as a basic research. To achieve this, inquiry on the present condition of rebar manufacturing industry in Korea is implemented. Then, the validation of BIC's applications by aspects of industry and the analysis of stakeholders' economical profit and loss are conducted.
