  • In this paper, PVA(polyvinylalcohol), oxidized starch and SBR latex were used as binders for ink-jet printing papers, and their effects of the type and blending ratio of binders on ink-jet printing properties were compared. In case of coating color using PVA mainly used for a binder in ink-jet printing, spreading of printed letters decreased and excellent images were manifested resulting from strong hydrophilic of PVA. However, increasing solids content of coating color was somewhat limited because of the interaction of PVA and functional groups in silica as well as high molecular weight of PVA. When oxidized starch and SBR latex were mixed with PVA at desirable ratio to solve these problems, runnability in coating process was improved and good printing properties were shown. Gloss was improved when latex was used along with PVA as a binder because of the thermoplastic property of the latex. From this result, possibilities of high solids content and high gloss ink-jet printing papers were investigated.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the viscosity of coating colors and ink-jet printing properties with different coating colors with various blending ratios of silica based pigments. The volume of pigments was measured to evaluate the effect of the pigments on the viscosity of coating colors. Contact angle, the change of ink diameter, optical density, and the area and perimeter of a printed let-ter were evaluated to examine the effect of the ink absorption on the ink-jet printing properties. Generally, as the amount of silica pigments Increased the ink-jet printing quality improved. But this caused an increase of the overall coating viscosity.

  • Ink-jet printing technology, which utilizes a digitalized design to print fine ink directly on a substrate, has been of interest in various industries due to its high efficiency and adaptability to various materials. Recently, active attempts have been made to apply ceramic materials having excellent heat resistance, light resistance, and chemical resistance to the ink-jet printing process. In this study, ceramic ink was synthesized by combining ceramic pigments with UV curable polymer. 3D printability at various contact angles between ceramic ink and substrate was analyzed in detail. Rheological properties of the synthesized ceramic ink were optimized to meet the requirements of the ink-jet printing process, and the contact angle of UV curable ceramic ink was controlled through surface treatment of the substrate. The potential for additive manufacturing of ceramic material using ink-jet printing was investigated by analyzing the effect of contact angle control on ceramic ink droplets and their 3D printability.

  • The print quality of a ink jet printer is generally affected by three major components of the printing process: printer, ink formulation, and paper. The result of this study indicated that the surface sized paper with oxidized starch and cationic starch differed ink jet print quality in terms of ink spread and black optical density of the print image. Paper properties, like air permeability and siting degree, which may influence the ink jet printing were also measured. It was found that black print quality was controlled by starch level and ionic charge on the paper surface. Cationic surface sizing starch improved black ink jet print quality.

  • Recently, ink-jet printing technology has been applied for various industries such as semiconductor, display, ceramic tile decoration. Ink-jet printing has advantages of high resolution patterning, fast printing speed, high ink efficiency and many attempts have been made to apply functional materials with excellent physical and chemical properties for the ink-jet printing process. Due to these advantages, research scope of ink-jet printing is expanding from conventional two-dimensional printing to three-dimensional printing. In order to expand the application of ink-jet printing, it is necessary to optimize the rheological properties of the ink and the interaction with the substrate. In this study, photo curable ceramic complex ink containing nano silica particles were synthesized and its printability was characterized. Contact angle of the photo curable silica ink were modified by control of the ink composition and the surface property of the substrate. Effects of contact angle on printing resolution and three-dimensional printability were investigated in detail.

  • In technology of ink-jet coating, Image quality from correlation between paper and ink depends on the properties of printer and ink as well as those of paper material. Generally, According to the quality of ink that consists of colorants from 5 to 20 percent, It seems that absorption behavior of each ink is different. In this study, we studied to estimate the effects of dye and pigment ink on the absorption and printing properties using 2-type papers on the market and 3-type silica-based coated papers whose pore structure is different. Using the theory of contact angle to evaluate the absorption property, it was possible to measure the baseline length between paper and ink, volume of droplet as well as contact angle. Also, It was possible to calculate wetting energy(mN/m) and spreading coefficient(mN/m) using the surface tension of each ink. These measurements were available to estimate ink-jet qualities.

  • The printed electronics field using ink-jet printing technology is in the spotlight as a next-generation technology, especially ink-jet 3D printing, which can simultaneously discharge and precisely control various ink materials, has been actively researched in recent years. In this study, complex structure of an insulating layer and a conductive layer was fabricated with photo-curable silica ink and PVP-added Cu nano ink using ink-jet 3D printing technology. A precise photocured silica insulating layer was designed by optimizing the printing conditions and the rheological properties of the ink, and the resistance of the insulating layer was 2.43 × 1013 Ω·cm. On the photo-cured silica insulating layer, a Cu conductive layer was printed by controlling droplet distance. The sintering of the PVP-added nano Cu ink was performed using an IPL flash sintering process, and electrical and mechanical properties were confirmed according to the annealing temperature and applied voltage. Finally, it was confirmed that the resistance of the PVP-added Cu conductive layer was very low as 29 μΩ·cm under 100℃ annealing temperature and 700 V of IPL applied voltage, and the adhesion to the photo-cured silica insulating layer was very good.

  • This paper reports the preparation of an ink-jet printed flexible electrochromic device based on a water-soluble viologen-functionalized dendrimer. Polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers were modified with different concentrations of 1-1 bis(propylamine)-4,4'-bipyridylium dibromides to obtain solution-processable electrochromic materials (K1/2 and K1). FTIR, NMR, and elemental analyses are used to characterize synthesized viologens. Moreover, their electrochemical properties were investigated using cyclic voltammetry in an electrolyte solution consisting of 0.1 M HCl to find the optimum viologens. The low-cost ink-jet printer was used to print the prepared water-soluble electrochromic inks onto the ITO coated PET substrate to form desired transparent patterns. The electrolyte was applied on the printed electrochromic ink to make a sandwich with another ITO coated PET to prepare the electrochromic devices (ECD). By applying an electrical potential (0 to -2 V), the transparent ECD's color changed from colorless to blue. The color changes for the optimum ECD (K1), which had more viologen units on the dendrimer, was accompanied by an optical contrast of 47% and 311.5 ㎠C-1 coloration efficiency at 600 nm.
